The REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G has the larger, higher-resolution display and a substantially higher stated battery capacity than the Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G; Xiaomi lists 67W charging for both. A fair current India price difference cannot be confirmed from Xiaomi’s available listings because the older phone’s page does not show a populated current price.

How the displays differ
The newer phone’s display is 0.16 inches larger diagonally and has a stated resolution of 2772 × 1280. Xiaomi specifies a 6.67-inch, 120Hz AMOLED panel for the Note 12 Pro 5G and a 6.83-inch, up-to-120Hz AMOLED panel for the Note 17 Pro 5G. It also lists 3500 nits peak brightness for the newer model; that is a manufacturer-stated peak figure, not an independent brightness test.
Xiaomi lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support for both models. The larger panel may suit buyers who prefer more screen area, but it also means choosing a physically larger phone; the specification pages alone do not establish which display looks better in everyday use. Processor: different chips, no proven speed winner
The Note 12 Pro 5G uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 1080, listed as a 6nm chip. Xiaomi lists a 4nm Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 in the Note 17 Pro 5G. Those names and manufacturing figures identify different hardware, but they are not enough to rank real-world speed, gaming performance, heat, or efficiency. No comparable benchmark results are established here.
Camera hardware: similar headline main-camera resolution
Both phones have a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. Xiaomi identifies the older phone’s main sensor as the Sony IMX766 and also specifies a 2MP macro camera; its Note 17 Pro 5G specification list does not include a macro camera. The Note 12 Pro 5G page also lists rear video recording up to 4K at 30fps.

Megapixel counts and the presence of OIS do not establish photo quality. The specifications do not show which model takes better pictures, especially across different lighting conditions, camera modes, or video use.
Battery and charging: a large capacity increase on paper
Xiaomi lists a typical 5000mAh battery for the Note 12 Pro 5G and a typical 9000mAh silicon-carbon battery for the Note 17 Pro 5G. Both India specification pages list 67W wired charging, and Xiaomi says a 67W charger is included with each phone. The newer model also lists 22.5W wired reverse charging.

The capacity figures make the newer phone the clear paper choice for buyers prioritising battery size, but they do not prove how long either phone lasts between charges. Actual endurance depends on usage and requires comparable independent testing; no such result is established here. Storage and software details to check before choosing
Xiaomi India lists the Note 12 Pro 5G in three configurations: 6GB + 128GB, 8GB + 128GB, and 8GB + 256GB. The Note 17 Pro 5G is listed in 8GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB versions. Its storage type changes with capacity: UFS 2.2 for 128GB and UFS 3.1 for 256GB. The older phone’s page lists LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage.

Xiaomi lists HyperOS 3 with Android 16 for the Note 17 Pro 5G. The cited Note 12 Pro 5G specification page does not establish a current software version or a future update commitment, so this comparison cannot determine which phone will receive support for longer.

Xiaomi’s official buy page for the Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G surfaced without a populated current selling price. As a result, there is no substantiated current price difference to calculate between the two phones. Do not treat the newer model’s ₹36,999 listing as a fair comparison against a historical launch price or an unrelated seller’s figure. Which phone makes more sense?
- Consider the Note 17 Pro 5G if you want the larger, higher-resolution display, the higher stated battery capacity, or the listed Android 16 and HyperOS 3 software.
- Consider the Note 12 Pro 5G if its available price and configuration suit you better, or if you value its explicitly named Sony IMX766 main sensor and dedicated 2MP macro camera. Those details do not, by themselves, prove better photographs.
- Compare actual prices before deciding. Xiaomi’s available listings do not establish a current like-for-like price spread, and the newer phone’s listing also has an out-of-stock signal on a separate official page.
