What Reddit’s AI search does
Reddit’s search effort has included two related ideas: AI-generated summaries on search-result pages and a conversational tool called Reddit Answers. The goal is to help users find relevant posts and comments, understand discussions, and discover communities.
In December 2024, TechCrunch reported that Reddit was testing Reddit Answers, which curated summaries of relevant Reddit posts and comments. The report said the feature used Reddit-built technology as well as models from OpenAI and Google Cloud; it did not specify which provider powered each capability. Reddit described Answers as a way to connect users with the underlying discussions. In an April 2, 2025 post, Reddit Business CMO and Customer Experience Officer Roxy Young called AI-generated results “a bridge to the actual information.” That is Reddit’s product positioning, not an independent assessment of answer quality. How the project developed
- February 22, 2024: Google announced an expanded cloud partnership. It said Reddit intended to use Vertex AI to improve search and other platform capabilities, and that Google would have access to Reddit’s Data API. The announcement does not identify every model or component later used in Reddit’s AI-search work. Google’s partnership announcement
- August 6, 2024: TechCrunch reported that Reddit CEO Steve Huffman told investors the company planned to test AI-powered search-result pages later that year. The planned pages would summarize and recommend content and help users discover communities. This was a reported plan for a test, not proof that the experiment launched as described. - December 2024: TechCrunch reported Reddit was testing the conversational Reddit Answers feature, which summarized relevant discussions.
- February 12, 2025: TechCrunch reported Reddit intended to integrate Reddit Answers into an upgraded search experience during 2025. Huffman described the aim as helping users navigate Reddit and answer “subjective hard, [and] interesting questions.” These were plans and statements at that time, not confirmation of a completed integration. The distinction is useful when choosing where to look. Reddit’s tool is aimed at finding and summarizing perspectives within Reddit communities; Google searches across the web and can surface Reddit alongside other sources. Whether either gives a better answer depends on the question, and the available reporting does not provide a controlled quality comparison.
Could Reddit challenge Google’s dominance?
It could compete for some searches, particularly when someone wants opinions or experience shared in Reddit discussions. People sometimes add “reddit” to a Google query to find those conversations; Reddit’s search tools could make that step less necessary for Reddit-specific answers.
That possibility is not evidence of a broader challenge to Google. The cited reporting and announcements do not establish comparative market share, search volume, Reddit Answers adoption, or answer accuracy. TechCrunch reported that Reddit had 342.3 million weekly active users in Q2 2024, up 57% year over year, but that dated audience figure is neither an AI-search user count nor proof that Reddit gained search share. The cited sources describe a beta and plans for integration, but do not verify Reddit Answers’ current availability, supported regions, or behavior as of September 30, 2026. The exact present-day rollout therefore cannot be established from this reporting.
