Paid subreddits are a separate idea: in 2025, CEO Steve Huffman said Reddit was shifting resources away from that work, and the available sources do not establish a later launch or permanent cancellation.
What is Reddit AI search?
Reddit introduced Reddit Answers as a limited test in December 2024 for some users in the United States and in English. It presented curated summaries of relevant Reddit conversations, with snippets, links to posts and communities, and suggested follow-up questions. Reddit now describes the feature in its Help Center as AI search: ask a question in natural language, then choose “Ask” to see an AI-generated summary of relevant posts and comments, citations to source posts or comments, and a list of communities. Reddit’s December 2024 announcement and its AI search help page, updated July 30, 2026, document the change.

How AI search differs from regular Reddit search
| Aspect | Traditional search | AI search |
|---|---|---|
| How to use it | Enter keywords in the search bar and press Enter to see native search results. | Enter a natural-language question and select “Ask.” |
| What you get | A results listing to browse for posts or communities. | A generated synthesis of relevant Reddit posts and comments, with citations and a list of communities. |
| Best suited to | Finding a particular post, topic, or community. | Surveying discussion around a subjective or multi-part question before opening source conversations. |
| Reliability | Results are user-generated Reddit content; inspect the original material. | The summary may be inaccurate, and the underlying posts and comments are not vetted or endorsed by Reddit. Inspect cited sources. |
Reddit says the feature uses generative AI and in-house technology to summarize existing posts and comments. It is designed to summarize Reddit content—not search the open web or generate images. It may also refuse unsafe or policy-violating requests. The citations make it possible to check what users actually said, but they do not make a summary authoritative.
Availability, question limits, and exclusions
As documented by Reddit on July 30, 2026, AI search is available in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, French, and German. English access is worldwide for devices set to English. Reddit also lists availability in specified countries for users whose device language is not English; consult its current help page for that country list, because access may change.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards can be sent by email/SMS and can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Reddit’s documented question limits are:
- Logged out: up to 10 questions per week.
- Logged in: up to 50 questions per day.
- Reddit Premium: up to 100 questions per day.
Reddit says these limits can change. AI search does not include all Reddit content: the Help Center names private, quarantined, and NSFW communities among the exclusions. Moderators currently cannot opt their community’s posts or comments out of search. Reddit also cautions that its summaries may be inaccurate and that source material is not vetted; double-check information, especially before making medical, legal, or financial decisions.
How Reddit’s search plans developed
In February 2025, CEO Steve Huffman said Reddit planned to integrate Reddit Answers into existing search to handle subjective and difficult questions. CFO Drew Vollero also said Reddit was recruiting engineers for a small search team, according to TechCrunch’s February 12, 2025 report. These were plans stated at that time, not a guarantee that every detail would ship.

In May 2025, Huffman said Reddit Answers was live in nine countries and that Reddit intended to expand it and integrate it directly into core search. He characterized the feature as a way to get to discussions faster, not a replacement for them: “Reddit Answers doesn’t replace conversations—it’s a quicker path towards them.” His May 2025 post described that roadmap.
Reddit’s Q4 2025 shareholder letter later reported significant progress unifying core search with Reddit Answers. The company said more than 80 million people searched directly on Reddit weekly during Q4 2025, compared with 60 million one year earlier. Those are Reddit-reported figures for the stated periods, not independent measurements. Reddit’s investor materials include the shareholder letter.

Are Reddit subreddits going to be paywalled?
Paid subreddits were discussed as a possible community-level model: creators or communities could charge for exclusive content or private spaces. But on August 1, 2025, Huffman said Reddit was shifting resources away from its user-economy work, including paid subreddits, while focusing on its core product, search, and international growth. As PC Gamer reported, he said: “It’s still an opportunity we believe in, but right now, we’re all-in on strengthening our core product, making Reddit the go-to place for search, and accelerating international growth.”
That statement means paid subreddits were deprioritized, not that Reddit announced a permanent cancellation. The sources available here do not establish a subsequent launch. Reddit Premium, which already exists, is not the same thing: Premium is an account-level subscription with platform perks, while paid subreddits would charge for access to particular communities or their content.

What Reddit Premium includes
Reddit’s Premium help page, updated May 26, 2026, lists ad-free browsing, higher content limits, and up to 100 AI-search questions per day among the subscription’s features. It lists U.S. web pricing at $5.99 monthly or $49.99 annually; in-app pricing is $6.99 monthly or $59.99 annually. Reddit says prices vary by geography and that app-store fees explain the higher in-app prices. These are Premium prices—not a price for paid subreddits. Check Reddit’s Premium help page for current terms and pricing.
Reddit’s shopping test is a separate project
Reddit also announced a shopping-experience test in February 2026, with an update dated September 10. It combines product discovery with AI summaries of Reddit conversations; some products in participating business catalogs show images, prices, and links to buy from a brand or retailer. The update says the test expanded to Home & Garden and Fashion & Apparel, alongside its initial categories. This is a separate product-discovery test, not evidence that paid subreddits have launched. See Reddit’s announcement.
