Reddit sued Anthropic in June 2025, alleging that the AI company continued accessing Reddit content and used it to train AI systems, including Claude, in violation of Reddit’s terms. Anthropic disputed the claims; a federal judge later sent the case back to California state court without deciding whether the allegations were true.

What Reddit alleges Anthropic did

Reddit announced on June 4, 2025, that it had filed suit. In its complaint, Reddit alleged that Anthropic used automated means to access Reddit’s platform, collected content for datasets used to train AI systems including Claude, and used that content commercially in breach of Reddit’s User Agreement and related obligations.

Reddit said Anthropic or its bots accessed or attempted to access Reddit more than 100,000 times after Anthropic had said it would stop. That figure is Reddit’s allegation, not an independently verified count or a finding by a court. The sources available for this case do not establish a neutral count of Anthropic’s access to Reddit.

Reddit framed the lawsuit as an effort to enforce its public-content policy and protect users’ privacy and content. It also contrasted the dispute with licensing arrangements it said it had with other AI companies. The available materials do not establish the full details of those arrangements or negotiations, or that payment alone would have resolved the dispute.

What the lawsuit claims—and what Anthropic says

The federal court’s order listed five claims Reddit pleaded:

  • Breach of contract
  • Unjust enrichment
  • Trespass to chattels
  • Tortious interference with contract
  • California unfair competition

These are allegations in Reddit’s complaint, not established violations. Reddit’s position is that the dispute involves contractual, technical-access, and privacy-related obligations, including alleged continued scraping after a statement that access would stop. Reddit chief legal officer Ben Lee told the Associated Press: “AI companies should not be allowed to scrape information and content from people without clear limitations on how they can use that data.”

Anthropic’s reported response was: “We disagree with Reddit’s claims and will defend ourselves vigorously.” That statement was reported by the Associated Press and TechCrunch; the sources here do not establish a more detailed defense.

What the federal judge decided in March 2026

Reddit originally filed the case in San Francisco County Superior Court. Anthropic removed it to federal court, arguing that federal copyright law preempted Reddit’s state-law claims. Reddit argued that its claims concerned duties distinct from copyright rights. On March 30, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted Reddit’s motion to remand the case to San Francisco Superior Court.

For that procedural question, the judge concluded that Reddit’s claims as pleaded included elements qualitatively different from copyright rights, including restrictions on the method and purpose of access, alleged technical trespass and server impairment, privacy covenants, and alleged misrepresentations. The order resolved where the case should proceed; it did not decide whether Anthropic scraped Reddit, whether Reddit’s claims are legally valid, or whether Anthropic is liable.

What is known about the case’s status

The March 30, 2026 order directed that the case return to San Francisco Superior Court under docket CGC-25-625892. The federal docket index records that mediation on August 1, 2025, did not result in a settlement, along with later federal proceedings. Those federal records do not establish what happened in state court after remand. The available sources therefore do not confirm whether the state case remains active, was settled or dismissed, or has another hearing scheduled.
