Logged-in moderators are exempt from that recency test. Reddit has not announced a start date beyond saying the change is expected “in the next few months,” and it has not specified what activity will count.
Is Reddit shutting down Old Reddit?
No shutdown has been announced. Reddit describes the changes as an effort to reduce scraping and automated abuse while preserving Old Reddit for people and moderators who rely on it. The company has not promised that the interface will remain indefinitely, either: its August 5, 2026 announcement says it plans changes over time and describes further modernization work without giving an end date. Reddit’s August 5 announcement calls Old Reddit a legacy desktop experience built 21 years ago; that age is Reddit’s characterization.
What are the new access limits?
The six-month activity test is an additional layer, not the first access restriction. Reddit said in August that logged-out users would continue to be required to log in to use Old Reddit in the short term. In September, Reddit employee “judy-funnie” said the company planned to limit access to logged-in users who had used the interface in the previous six months. Ars Technica reported the update on September 30, 2026.
| Reader situation | Reported rule | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Logged-out visitor | Login is required to access Old Reddit, according to Reddit’s August announcement. | You need to be signed in; browsing while logged out is already restricted. |
| Logged-in ordinary user | Once the new rule takes effect, use of Old Reddit within the preceding six months will be required. | If you rely on the interface, keep access to your Reddit account and watch for Reddit’s implementation notice. The qualifying activity and how the six-month window is calculated have not been specified. |
| Logged-in moderator | Exempt from the six-month recency test, according to Ars Technica. | Moderators can continue to view Old Reddit regardless of when they last used it, but must still be logged in. |
When does the six-month rule start?
There is no exact launch date in the announcement reported by Ars. Reddit’s wording was “in the next few months,” so the rule should be treated as planned rather than already in effect as of October 3, 2026. The available reporting also does not say whether opening any Old Reddit page is enough to count, whether use must involve a particular action, or whether Reddit will measure activity account-wide.

Why is Reddit restricting Old Reddit?
Reddit says the login wall and planned changes are meant to limit scraping and automated abuse. Spokesperson Rosa Kim told Ars: “This change is about limiting unauthenticated access and reducing automated abuse—not removing Old Reddit for people and moderators who rely on it.” The company has not published a measured reduction in scraping attributable to either the login requirement or the six-month test, so the rationale is Reddit’s stated one rather than a quantified result.
The Old Reddit plans sit within a broader infrastructure and moderation update. Reddit says it will gradually restrict new API requests, require third-party apps to transition to and operate on its Developer Platform, and help move critical bots and moderator workflows to its modern stack. The company says it launched a $1 million app migration program, but has not published a migration calendar for every bot, app, or moderator tool. These plans do not establish a deadline for all developers or moderators to move.

What about Reddit RSS feeds?
RSS is a separate change from Old Reddit eligibility. Ars reported that Reddit plans to end RSS support on November 13, 2026. According to the report, moderator feed workflows are expected to move to supported alternatives; Reddit has not offered a replacement for feeds outside a community the user moderates. The reported date and alternatives concern RSS, not the six-month Old Reddit access test.

What should Old Reddit users do?
- If you are an ordinary user: Make sure you can sign in, and check Reddit’s official updates for the rollout date and the definition of qualifying use. No particular activity has yet been identified as sufficient.
- If you moderate a community: The reported recency exemption applies when you are logged in. If a bot or moderation workflow depends on legacy infrastructure, Reddit says it intends to work on migration, but has not given tool-by-tool dates.
- If you rely on RSS: Treat the reported November 13, 2026 cutoff as a separate issue and check Reddit’s updates about supported moderator alternatives before then.
