These are options, not a “correct” setup: keep the HUD, camera view, or accessibility aids that help you play confidently.
Try first-person view selectively
First-person view can make close interactions and some gunfights feel more immediate, but it can also make it harder to read your surroundings. Try it in a low-pressure situation, then switch back to third person if visibility or comfort suffers.

While aiming in first person, tap down on the D-pad to look down your sights, according to Rockstar Games’ quick tips. That instruction uses console button labels; on PC, follow the prompts shown for your input method.
Change the aiming shoulder in third person
If your character or nearby cover blocks your view, switch the camera to the other shoulder while aiming. Rockstar Support’s documented input is to hold L2/LT and press D-pad Left to toggle between the left and right side of the character. The button labels apply to controllers; PC players should follow their in-game prompts. See Rockstar Support’s shoulder-camera instructions.

Use Cinematic Camera for rides where you can give up control
Cinematic Camera is suited to a known route or a stretch of scenery when you want hands-free travel. To set up a ride, navigate to a main road, set a waypoint on the map, build up some speed, and switch to Cinematic Camera, as Rockstar’s quick tips recommend. You give up moment-to-moment steering, so ride manually when you need more control or the route is uncertain.
Make repeated button presses more manageable
Tap Assist can reduce the effort required in action sequences that ask for repeated button presses. Open Pause Menu > Settings > Controls > Accessibility, then choose Off, 2x, 3x, 4x, or Hold. Start with the lowest level that makes the sequences manageable. Rockstar Support documents the options and path in its Tap Assist guidance.

Tune controls in small steps
There is no single sensitivity or camera setup that suits every player. Controller condition, platform, and personal preference all affect how controls feel. RDR2.org suggests considering the Standard FPS preset, Toggle to Run, a low dead zone, aim and look sensitivity adjustments, and disabling camera auto-center; these are guide recommendations, not universal best settings. Its control settings guide also discusses field of view, but a wider view is not automatically more comfortable or immersive for everyone.
- Find a safe area where you can move and aim without pressure.
- Change one control setting at a time, such as dead zone or look sensitivity.
- Move, turn, and aim to see whether the change feels more predictable.
- Keep or undo the adjustment before changing another setting.
Choose the trade-off that suits the moment
- Presence versus awareness: First person and fewer guidance aids may make the world feel closer; third person and HUD cues provide more spatial information.
- Comfort versus challenge: Aim assistance and Tap Assist reduce input demands. Manual repeated presses or less assistance may feel more demanding.
- Cinematic flow versus control: Cinematic Camera makes selected rides more relaxed, while manual riding gives you direct control.
Keep any aid that improves accessibility or reduces frustration. A less mediated interface is a personal preference, not a measure of playing the game the “right” way.
