Recurve is the bow style used at the Olympics; compound appears at other major competitions, including the World Games, but is not an Olympic target-archery style. Neither is universally easier for a beginner: fit, coaching and what you want to shoot matter.
How recurve and compound bows work
Recurve: limbs, riser and string
A recurve bow has a central handle called a riser, a pair of limbs and a string that loops around the limb tips. On many modern target bows, the limbs detach from the riser for transport or storage. A sight attaches to the riser, and stabilisers are common in target setups. The archer draws and releases the string with the fingers, typically protected by a finger tab. An arm guard helps protect the forearm from string contact, while a chest guard can keep clothing clear of the string. Modern risers commonly use aluminium or carbon fibre; limbs may combine laminated carbon fibre and carbon foam, though some manufacturers also use natural materials such as bamboo. World Archery’s recurve equipment overview describes these components.
Compound: cams, cables and let-off
A compound bow has a riser and limbs, with cams at the limb ends linked by cables and the bowstring. The cam system changes the force needed as the archer draws. Near full draw, the bow reaches a mechanical stop and the force the archer must hold drops through let-off. Compound target setups commonly use an adjustable sight with a magnifying scope, a sight pin and level, stabilisers and dampers, an arrow rest, a nocking point and often a D-loop. Many compound archers use a release aid rather than releasing the string with their fingers. Cam choice is matched to draw length, maximum draw weight and let-off, so the bow needs to be fitted rather than chosen by appearance alone. See World Archery’s compound equipment overview.
World Archery gives illustrative competitive-bow figures of up to 28 kilograms (60 pounds) to draw and as little as 6 kilograms (13 pounds) to hold at full draw. These are examples published in its equipment explanation, not recommended beginner settings or universal specifications. World Archery explains compound bow operation and equipment.

How target distances and scoring differ
In World Archery’s standard outdoor target formats, recurve is shot at 70 metres and compound at 50 metres. The target faces differ too: recurve uses a 122-centimetre face; compound uses an 80-centimetre face, usually with the four outer scoring rings removed in international competition. The ten scoring zones run from 10 points at the inner ring to 1 at the outer ring, and a miss scores zero. On the compound face, the 10-ring is 8 centimetres across; on the recurve face, it is 12.2 centimetres across. These are target-archery specifications, not rules for every discipline or local event. World Archery’s target archery overview gives the standard distances and face sizes.
| World Archery outdoor target detail | Recurve | Compound |
|---|---|---|
| Standard distance | 70 metres | 50 metres |
| Target face diameter | 122 centimetres | 80 centimetres; four outer rings usually removed in international competition |
| 10-ring diameter | 12.2 centimetres | 8 centimetres |
| Individual match scoring | Set-play | Cumulative total |
In individual recurve matchplay, archers shoot sets. The winner of a set receives two set points; a tied set gives each archer one. The first archer to six set points wins the match. Individual compound matchplay uses cumulative scoring: totals are recorded each end, and the higher total after five ends wins. The team-match point targets differ from individual matches. Which style asks more of the archer?
They demand different forms of control, not a simple ranking from easy to hard. Recurve archers manage the string with their fingers and tab, aim through a sight in target competition, and coordinate the draw, aim and release without a compound cam system’s holding-weight reduction. Compound’s let-off reduces the force held at full draw, but the archer still has to aim precisely and execute a controlled release. World Archery describes compound shooting as drawing to the mechanical stop, aiming through the magnified sight and executing the release. Under pressure, consciously punching the release can contribute to target panic. World Archery’s compound overview.
The available equipment descriptions do not establish that one style is universally easier for beginners. Bow fit, strength, instruction and the archer’s goals all affect the learning experience. Try both with a qualified instructor or club before choosing equipment; World Archery notes that bows and arrows are tuned to an archer’s size and strength, and its rules specify which equipment is allowed in international competition. Olympic, indoor and field archery are different contexts
World Archery identifies target archery as the discipline used at the Olympic Games. Recurve is the Olympic bow style; compound is featured in the World Games and other major competitions described by World Archery, but is not an Olympic target-archery style. Event programmes can change, so this distinction applies to the cited competition context rather than every future event. World Archery’s target archery overview and its discipline overview.
The outdoor target distances and scoring above should not be carried over to all archery. Indoor archery is typically shot at 18 metres and uses set-play for recurve and cumulative scoring for compound. Field archery adds marked and unmarked distances, terrain, elevation changes, variable light and the challenge of judging distance. National federations and local events may also use their own formats. World Archery’s indoor archery overview, its field archery overview and its equipment overview.
