Which phone has the better display?
The Redmi Note 17 5G has the larger listed display at 17.75 cm, compared with 16.69 cm on the realme 16 5G. Both are FHD+-class panels with a maximum listed refresh rate of 120 Hz. The manufacturers describe the panel technologies somewhat differently, so the specifications do not establish which screen looks better in use.

Battery capacity and charging: capacity versus wattage
Xiaomi lists an 8000 mAh typical battery for the Redmi; realme lists 7000 mAh typical and 6830 mAh rated for its phone. Redmi also supports 22.5 W wired reverse charging. realme’s listed maximum wired charging rate is higher at 60 W, compared with Redmi’s 45 W. These manufacturer ratings do not prove real-world endurance or time to recharge; usage, settings, and charging conditions matter.
Camera hardware: front-camera resolution differs
Both phones list a 50 MP main rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture. realme adds a 2 MP monochrome rear camera, while Xiaomi lists a single 50 MP main camera. For selfies, realme specifies 50 MP and Redmi specifies 8 MP at f/2.0. A higher megapixel count alone does not establish better photo quality, so these specifications are not enough to name a camera winner.

Performance, memory, and storage
The realme uses a MediaTek Dimensity 6400 Turbo; Redmi uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 manufactured on a 4 nm process. Chipset names by themselves do not settle which phone is faster. No like-for-like benchmark conditions, matching software versions, or repeatable independent test results are established here.
Check the exact configuration in the listing. realme’s India specifications list three combinations, up to 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, and storage-card support. Xiaomi lists 128 GB storage with either 6 GB or 8 GB RAM. Both specify LPDDR4X memory and UFS 2.2 storage.

Weight, software, and what comes in the box
At about 183 g, realme’s listed weight is 42 g below Xiaomi’s 225 g. That may matter if you prefer a lighter phone; the figures are manufacturer measurements.
The India specification pages label the software realme UI 7.0 and Xiaomi HyperOS 3. They do not establish a comparable software-update support commitment, so do not infer update duration from these labels.

The listed package contents include a charger and protective case for both phones. Xiaomi also lists a factory-applied screen protector. Both manufacturers warn, in different terms, that packaging can vary by market; confirm the contents for the exact regional unit being sold.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose Redmi Note 17 5G if you want the larger display, higher stated battery capacity, wired reverse charging, or the lower price in the cited India snapshot. Verify its live price and whether the listing has 6 GB or 8 GB RAM.
- Choose realme 16 5G if you prioritize lower listed weight, a higher-resolution front camera, or a higher maximum wired charging rating.
- Compare carefully if your deciding factor is performance or camera quality: the listed chipset and camera specifications do not provide a controlled performance test or a reliable image-quality verdict.
