Microsoft Edge can read ordinary webpages, selected text, Reading mode content, and—when the PDF has usable text—a PDF. When the command is missing or playback does nothing, the cause is usually the page type, muted audio, an unavailable voice, or an Edge policy rather than a broken installation.
Work through the checks below in order. Start with a direct launch method before changing Edge settings.
1. Start Read Aloud directly
On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+U. On macOS, press Command+Shift+U. You can also use either of these menu paths:
- Select Settings and more (…) > More tools > Read aloud.
- Right-click the webpage and select Read aloud.
If the page contains only a particular passage you want to hear, select that text, right-click it, and choose Read aloud selection.

- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption

When the control opens, select Play. To stop playback, select Pause or the X on the Read Aloud controls.
2. Check that Edge is not simply muted
If the text highlights or the playback control moves but you hear nothing, check the audio path rather than the page:
- Play a video or sound in another browser tab to confirm that Windows or macOS has working audio.
- Open the operating system’s volume mixer and make sure Microsoft Edge is not muted or assigned to a disconnected output device.
- Check the physical volume, Bluetooth headset connection, monitor speakers, and any external audio interface.
- On the Read Aloud toolbar, open Voice options and try another voice and a slower reading speed.
Basic Read Aloud can work online and offline. Offline use has fewer voices, however, so a natural or online voice may be unavailable when the device has no connection. If only one voice fails, switch voices instead of assuming the whole feature is broken.
3. Try Reading mode, but do not treat it as a requirement
Read Aloud does not require Reading mode. It can be launched directly from More tools, the context menu, or the keyboard shortcut above.

- Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance > Toolbar.
- Turn on Reading mode.
- Return to a supported article and select Reading mode in the address bar, or press F9.
- On the Reading mode toolbar, select Read aloud.
- Use the playback ribbon’s play, previous paragraph, next paragraph, and Voice options controls.
Microsoft’s documentation uses both Reading mode and Immersive Reader for this family of functionality. Seeing one label rather than the other does not mean that a separate feature is missing.
4. Test a supported webpage
Reading mode and Immersive Reader are available only on some webpages. A page may therefore have no Reading mode button or Enter Immersive Reader command even though Edge is functioning normally.
To isolate the problem, open a normal text-heavy article from another site and try Ctrl+Shift+U or More tools > Read aloud. If it works there, the original site is likely restricting or presenting its content in a way Edge cannot process.
For a page that does not offer Reading mode for the entire document:
- Select the passage you need.
- Right-click the selection.
- Choose Open selection in Reading mode.
- Select Read aloud on the Reading mode toolbar.
This is particularly useful for pages containing several unrelated sections, embedded apps, or content that Edge cannot identify as the main article.

5. Check PDFs separately
Read Aloud is not categorically incompatible with PDFs. Edge can expose Read Aloud from the PDF toolbar when the feature is enabled. Playback still depends on the PDF containing a readable text layer and on Edge’s PDF viewer being able to extract it.
A scanned document made only from images usually has no selectable text. In that case, Read Aloud has nothing reliable to synthesize. Try another PDF that allows you to select and copy words. If the second file works, the issue is the first PDF’s text layer, not Edge’s audio feature.

On a managed work or school computer, an administrator can disable Read Aloud with the Edge policy ReadAloudEnabled. When disabled, all normal entry points can disappear: the address bar, context menu, More menu, PDF toolbar, and Immersive Reader.
On Windows, check the policy status by opening edge://policy in the address bar and selecting Reload policies. Look for ReadAloudEnabled. If it is listed as disabled, you need the organization’s administrator to change it.

The policy identifier is ReadAloudEnabled. Its Windows registry location is:
SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
with a REG_DWORD value named ReadAloudEnabled. A value of 1 enables the feature. Do not edit this policy on a managed device unless you administer it. Microsoft lists policy support for Windows and macOS version 113 or later, and Android and iOS version 145 or later. The policy is per-profile and does not apply to a profile signed in with a Microsoft account.
7. Confirm the browser and platform situation
Read Aloud is also available in Edge on iOS and Android, but Microsoft notes that availability and behavior can vary by device, market, and browser version. Update Edge through the relevant app store, then test a standard article.
On Windows 11, Edge’s accessibility page is at Settings and more (…) > Settings > Accessibility. That page contains accessibility options, but it is not the documented switch for enabling Read Aloud. Do not waste time looking for a general “turn on Read Aloud” toggle there.

Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Likely cause | Best next test |
|---|---|---|
| The command is missing everywhere | Enterprise policy, outdated or unsupported build, or a managed profile | Open edge://policy; test Edge on an unmanaged device |
| The command exists but there is no sound | Muted Edge, wrong output device, or failed voice | Check the volume mixer and try another voice in Voice options |
| It works on one site but not another | The page is unsupported or its content is not exposed as readable text | Use text selection, then Open selection in Reading mode |
| A PDF does not play | The file may be scanned or lack a text layer | Test a PDF with selectable text |
| Only an online/natural voice fails | No connection or that voice is unavailable offline | Reconnect, or select one of the available offline voices |
What not to assume
- “Immersive Reader is required.” It is not. Direct Read Aloud entry points work without opening Reading mode.
- “Read Aloud always needs the internet.” Basic playback supports offline use, although voice choices are limited.
- “Read Aloud never works with PDFs.” PDFs can expose the feature, but scanned or image-only files may not provide readable text.
- “Network reset commands are the official fix.” Commands such as netsh winsock reset and ipconfig /flushdns are not established as a Microsoft Read Aloud-specific repair. Use them only for a separately diagnosed network problem.
The interactive Read Aloud experience described in Microsoft’s current Reading mode documentation incorporates Copilot and requires the microphone to be enabled and the volume turned on. That requirement concerns the interactive voice experience, not the basic act of having Edge synthesize webpage text.
FAQ
Why is Read aloud missing from Microsoft Edge?
The page may not expose readable content, or an organization may have disabled the feature with the ReadAloudEnabled policy. Test a text-heavy article and inspect edge://policy. On supported pages, the command is available through More tools > Read aloud, the right-click menu, or Ctrl+Shift+U on Windows and Command+Shift+U on macOS.
Why does Edge Read Aloud start but produce no sound?
Check the operating system volume mixer, Edge’s selected output device, Bluetooth or monitor audio, and the selected voice. Open Voice options and try a different voice at a slower speed.
Can Edge Read Aloud work without an internet connection?
Yes. Microsoft says basic Read Aloud works online and offline. Offline mode provides only a limited selection of voices, so some natural or online voices may not work until you reconnect.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I use Read Aloud on a page without Reading mode?
Select the text, right-click it, and choose Read aloud selection. Alternatively, choose Open selection in Reading mode, then select Read aloud on that mode’s toolbar.
Does Read Aloud work with PDFs in Edge?
It can. Edge’s PDF toolbar is a documented Read Aloud location, but the PDF needs a usable text layer. A scan made from images may not contain selectable text and therefore may not be readable.
Do I need to enable Read Aloud in Edge Accessibility settings?
No general Read Aloud switch is documented there. On Windows 11, Edge accessibility settings are at Settings and more (…) > Settings > Accessibility; launch Read Aloud through More tools, the context menu, the shortcut, or Reading mode instead.
The Bottom Line
First test Ctrl+Shift+U on a normal article, then check Edge’s audio output and Voice options. If the command is absent on every page, inspect edge://policy for ReadAloudEnabled. If it fails only on one webpage or PDF, use a text selection or test whether the document actually contains selectable text.
