The original “Reactive Audio WebVR” tutorial, published by Alex Kempton on CSS-Tricks on January 5, 2017, builds a Three.js scene, adds device-motion controls and stereoscopic viewing, then points toward music-reactive visuals. Its VR code uses now-legacy WebVR APIs; for new headset support, use WebXR where available and provide an inline, non-immersive fallback.
What the Reactive Audio WebVR tutorial builds
Alex Kempton’s CSS-Tricks tutorial builds a browser-based 3D scene in stages: first a Three.js scene, camera, WebGL renderer, cubes and an animation loop; then camera orientation controlled by device motion; and finally a stereoscopic effect for a VR viewer. The audio-reactive idea is to connect music analysis to the scene’s objects so their appearance or movement responds as the sound changes.
The implementation is a useful historical example, not a current WebVR recipe. Its device-motion and headset presentation code uses the WebVR polyfill, VRControls, VREffect, navigator.getVRDisplays() and requestPresent(). Those names belong to the tutorial’s older approach. New browser XR work should be designed around WebXR sessions instead.
How audio analysis drives a Three.js scene
Web Audio represents audio processing as a graph of connected nodes. Connect an audio source to an AnalyserNode, then connect that node onward to the audio output if the sound should remain audible. The analyser provides real-time frequency and time-domain data while passing the audio stream through unchanged, as described in MDN’s AnalyserNode documentation.

Frequency data versus waveform data
| Analysis data | What it represents | Useful visual mapping |
|---|---|---|
| Frequency-domain data | Energy across frequency bins, useful for separating bass, midrange and treble behavior. | Drive different groups of objects or visual properties from selected frequency ranges. |
| Time-domain data | The changing waveform amplitude over time. | Map waveform movement to a line, ring, or other shape that follows the signal’s changes. |
Read analyser values into a typed array and use them in the render loop. For example, a visualizer can average a chosen range of frequency bins and map that smoothed value to an object’s scale, rotation, color or position. Smoothing helps avoid abrupt jumps when individual readings fluctuate. Keep the mapping intentional: one broad average can drive a simple pulse, while separate ranges can give different objects distinct responses.
Where the analyser fits in the rendering loop
- Create an
AudioContextand an audio source, then connect the source to anAnalyserNode. Connect the audio graph to its destination if playback is required. - Allocate a typed array sized for the analyser data you plan to read, and update it with frequency or time-domain samples.
- In the animation loop, read the latest analyser data, derive one or more visual values, and apply them to Three.js mesh properties.
- Render the updated scene on each animation frame. The 2017 tutorial uses
requestAnimationFramefor its scene loop; an immersive WebXR renderer should instead follow the XR session’s frame lifecycle.
The Web Audio API is designed for controlling audio, adding effects and creating visualizations through a modular routing graph. Audio analysis and immersive display are separate concerns: the analyser can power a visualization in an ordinary browser view as well as in a headset.

WebVR and WebXR: what to use now
WebVR is the older browser-VR approach demonstrated by the tutorial. Its polyfill and methods such as navigator.getVRDisplays() and requestPresent() should be understood in that historical context rather than copied as the foundation for a new project.
WebXR is the current standards family for browser-based virtual and augmented reality. The MDN WebXR Device API overview describes support for selecting compatible output devices, rendering a scene at an appropriate frame rate and handling motion vectors from input controllers. MDN marks the API experimental, with limited availability, and restricted to secure contexts. Availability therefore depends on the browser, device and context; check capabilities at runtime rather than assuming an XR session can start.

WebXR also supports inline presentation, so an XR-capable scene can be experienced within the browser without an immersive headset. See MDN’s WebXR fundamentals for the distinction between inline and immersive presentation. For a resilient demo, make the standard browser view usable on its own and offer headset entry only when the browser reports that the required immersive mode is supported.

Yes. The tutorial’s basic scene does not require special VR hardware: it describes using a phone’s motion to explore and clicking and dragging on a laptop. A headset is only needed for the stereoscopic phone-viewer experience; it is optional for experimenting with the 3D scene and its audio response.

If you want the split stereoscopic view on a phone, the tutorial suggests a phone VR viewer such as a Google Cardboard-compatible viewer. CSS-Tricks gave a historical £3–£50 range in 2017; that figure is not a current price guide, and current availability was not established. Check phone compatibility, lens adjustment, fit and comfort before choosing a viewer.

What to keep from the tutorial—and what to replace
- Keep the staged build: start with a working Three.js scene and animation loop, add audio analysis, then add optional immersive presentation.
- Keep audio and visuals modular: use an analyser to obtain data, then decide how that data maps to scene properties.
- Replace the old VR presentation layer for new work: use WebXR concepts and capability checks rather than relying on the WebVR polyfill and its display-presentation calls.
- Preserve a non-immersive path: ordinary browser rendering remains useful when XR is unavailable and makes the audio visualizer easier to try without dedicated hardware.
