React DOM renders into a browser’s DOM for websites and web apps; React Native renders its own components into native platform UI for mobile apps. Choose based on where your product needs to run and which platform capabilities it needs—not on the shared name.
What is the difference between React and React Native?
React is the library and programming model for building component-based interfaces. In a browser app, React DOM connects that model to the browser DOM. React Native uses React concepts but supplies a different renderer and component set, mapping its components to platform UI building blocks. The React Native project describes its approach as “Learn once, write anywhere.”
| Decision area | React for the web (React DOM) | React Native |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering target | Browser DOM in a web application | Native platform UI |
| Typical UI components | Browser HTML and SVG elements, such as div, plus DOM-specific APIs |
Components such as View, Text, Image, TextInput, Pressable, and list components |
| Platform capabilities | Browser APIs and web standards | iOS and Android APIs and platform behavior; some work may need platform-specific implementation |
| Navigation | Usually browser-oriented routing; React DOM itself is a renderer, not a routing system | Usually a navigator library; the official guide points new projects to React Navigation for common stack and tab patterns |
| Performance considerations | Depends on the application, browser, and implementation; no head-to-head benchmark is established here | JavaScript-thread work can affect responsiveness; release-build measurement on target devices is important |

What transfers between React and React Native—and what does not?
Concepts and non-UI code can transfer
Both use React’s component-oriented, declarative way of describing interfaces. Depending on how an application is structured, developers may also share data models, validation, business rules, and other code that does not depend on a particular rendering environment.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Browser UI does not automatically become native UI
A browser component such as div is not a React Native component, and browser DOM APIs target a browser environment rather than React Native. Native screens use React Native host components such as View and Text, along with platform APIs. Expect to plan presentation and platform integration separately from shared application logic.
Platform-specific code is a normal option
React Native provides the Platform module and platform-specific filename conventions for handling iOS and Android differences. Its platform-specific code guide also describes .native.js as one option when sharing code between web or Node and native environments. These tools help organize differences; they do not eliminate the need to implement platform-specific behavior where it exists.

Which should you choose?
Choose React with React DOM for a website or browser app
Use the web renderer when the product’s primary experience is in a browser, especially if it relies on web standards, browser DOM behavior, or web deployment. A mobile-sized browser layout is still a web app; it is not automatically a native mobile application.
Choose React Native for native mobile UI
Use React Native when the intended product is an iOS or Android app and native platform components or APIs matter. The choice still involves platform-specific design, integration, navigation, and release work. The official documentation also describes integrating React Native into existing Android or iOS apps, so adoption does not necessarily require replacing an entire native application.

Compare the requirements before committing
- Target devices: Is the product for browsers, iOS, Android, or some combination?
- Interface expectations: Does the experience depend on web behavior or platform-native UI conventions?
- Device integration: Which browser or device capabilities does the product need?
- Platform-specific behavior: How much will screens and interactions differ across targets?
- Code-sharing boundaries: Which logic is independent of the UI renderer, and which presentation must be separate?
- Team experience and delivery: Which platform workflows can the team maintain and release reliably?
React and React Native are related, but they are not interchangeable rendering targets. The project’s target experience is the clearest starting point for the decision.
Is React Native faster than React?
There is no universal speed winner established by the available documentation. The comparison depends on what the app does, how it is implemented, the browser or devices involved, and the way performance is measured.

The React Native performance guide explains that JavaScript-thread work can cause dropped frames, while scrolling and some native navigation transitions may continue on the native UI thread. It also notes that development mode affects JavaScript-thread performance and advises measuring release builds. Those are implementation considerations, not a benchmark showing React Native is categorically faster or slower than a React web app.
For a meaningful product decision, profile the actual application on representative target devices or browsers. Record the workload, build mode, and platforms tested; do not infer a comparative result from framework names alone.

Using ScreenshotNeo for browser-interface checks
If your React web work includes capturing browser screenshots for visual checks or documentation, ScreenshotNeo is the screenshot API alternative to try first: it removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. This is a browser screenshot service, not a React renderer or a substitute for testing a native iOS or Android app.
For example, a single GET request can capture a web page as an image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month—no card required.
