RCS can make texting from an iPhone to Android more like a modern chat, with higher-resolution media, typing indicators, read receipts and improved group features—but only when RCS is supported and enabled for everyone in the conversation. Otherwise, messages can use SMS or MMS. All three appear in green bubbles on iPhone, so green does not tell you which one is active.
What changes when you text Android with RCS?
RCS is the richer messaging option for compatible iPhone–Android conversations. Compared with SMS/MMS, it can support higher-resolution photos and videos, typing indicators, read receipts and group-chat features. These features depend on device, app, carrier and regional support; they are not guaranteed in every conversation.
RCS can send messages over mobile data or Wi-Fi. SMS and MMS are carrier-delivered. Data charges depend on your connection and plan, so do not assume RCS is free in every circumstance.

Why are the messages still green?
On iPhone, green bubbles indicate messages sent as something other than iMessage; the color does not distinguish RCS from SMS or MMS. A green conversation with an Android user may be using RCS or carrier SMS/MMS. Look for RCS wording or indicators in the conversation or Messages settings rather than relying on color. Apple’s Messages setup guide explains the iPhone’s message settings.
What do you need to use RCS on iPhone?
Apple says iPhone RCS requires iOS 18 or later and a text-messaging plan with a carrier that supports RCS on iPhone. Support varies by carrier and region, and Google also cautions that RCS may not be available to iPhone users in some countries or on some carriers.

- Update iOS: RCS on iPhone requires iOS 18 or later.
- Check Messages settings: Look for the RCS option in your iPhone’s Messages settings. Availability of the option can depend on carrier support.
- Confirm carrier support: If RCS is missing or inactive, ask your carrier whether it supports RCS on iPhone in your region.
- Check the conversation: If the recipient or another group member does not have RCS enabled, the conversation may use SMS or MMS instead.

What happens when RCS is unavailable?
RCS is active only when all participants in a group conversation have it enabled. If a participant cannot use RCS, messages may fall back to SMS or MMS, which continue through the carrier. Whether you see a resend option or can change the delivery method depends on app settings and carrier behavior.

Are RCS messages between iPhone and Android encrypted?
Do not assume that a cross-platform RCS conversation is end-to-end encrypted. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. Google says its end-to-end encryption applies to eligible conversations between Google Messages users and that RCS chats with iPhone users do not have that protection. Apple’s current support article describes beta end-to-end encrypted RCS in Messages beginning with iOS 26.5 on supported carriers; it is rolling out over time and requires encryption support from all participants’ carriers. This is conditional, evolving support—not a guarantee for every iPhone–Android RCS chat.
Before treating a conversation as protected, look in the chat for an explicit “Encrypted” label or lock icon. Apple explains that SMS/MMS messages aren’t end-to-end encrypted; Google describes its platform’s protections in How RCS chats keep your conversations secure and its RCS chats FAQ.
