Rat King is best understood as a durable, team-fight pressure hero—not a conventional hard-engage initiator who reliably starts a fight with one decisive entry. He advances with area damage and disruption, can make nearby allies harder to slow or damage, and can withstand a response. Compared with Seven’s area-control setup, Rat King offers more explicit frontline protection and ally support; the available evidence does not support a detailed current comparison with several other named heroes.
What Rat King contributes to an initiation
Deadlock.io’s unofficial hero-role guide treats a role as a contribution to a particular lineup, not a fixed build or a label that dictates how every match should be played. Its practical questions are whether a hero can start a fight, reach a target, survive the response, and give teammates a chance to follow up. By that standard, Rat King can help lead or sustain a fight, but the available descriptions do not establish that he has the mobility, timing, or reliability of a dedicated hard-engage tool.

His listed kit combines repeated area pressure, target weakening, self-protection, and an ally-centered area effect. That mix makes him useful when a team wants to push into a contested space and keep pressure on opponents rather than depend on a single pick to begin the engagement.
Scrap Grenade and Rat Swarm: pressure and target weakening
Scrap Grenade detonates multiple times, dealing bullet damage and slowing enemies. Rat Swarm pressures a target over time and reduces that target’s bullet resistance. Together, these abilities can make opponents less comfortable holding a position and make a marked target more vulnerable to allied bullet damage.

Royal Pestments: staying power on entry
Royal Pestments grants a barrier based on Rat King’s maximum health and can deflect incoming bullets while the barrier holds. This gives him a way to withstand some of the response when he advances, rather than relying only on distance or an escape. The source description does not establish how long the protection lasts in every situation, so it should not be treated as a guarantee that Rat King can safely enter any fight.
Rule, Ratannia!: area support and disruption
Deadlock.one’s October 3, 2026 overview describes Rule, Ratannia! as an area effect around a banner that damages and knocks enemies into the air, slows them, and spreads Rat Swarm to enemies in its area. The banner also gives nearby allies movement speed, slow immunity, and reduced incoming damage. This gives Rat King a way to make a push more favorable for teammates while disrupting opponents in the same space. Exact ability values can change as Deadlock is updated, so the overview is a dated snapshot rather than a permanent balance reference.
Rat King and Seven: two different kinds of fight setup
The available hero-specific comparison is strongest against Seven, and it points to a difference in setup rather than a simple ranking. Seven’s guide describes a delayed stun that can create an opening for repeated weapon shocks or a storm. The storm has a long channel, and cover can undo much of its area pressure, so positioning and opponents remaining exposed matter to its payoff (Deadlock.io’s Seven guide).

| Comparison point | Rat King | Seven |
|---|---|---|
| How pressure begins | Repeated grenade detonations, ongoing target pressure, and an area effect around a banner (deadlock.one, Rat King page; October 3 overview). | A delayed stun can set up weapon shocks or a storm (Deadlock.io, Seven guide). |
| Disruption and space | Slows enemies; the banner’s area effect is described as damaging, knocking enemies into the air, slowing them, and spreading Rat Swarm. | Uses a delayed stun and area pressure; cover can reduce the storm’s impact. |
| Survival or ally help | Has a health-based barrier that can deflect bullets; the banner gives nearby allies movement speed, slow immunity, and damage reduction. | The cited guide does not establish an equivalent barrier or ally-protection effect. |
| Main constraint described | Available descriptions do not establish a reliable standalone entry or pick tool. | The storm’s long channel makes positioning important, and cover can blunt area pressure. |
In practical terms, Rat King’s described strengths fit a team that wants to occupy space and keep advancing with protection and pressure. Seven’s described setup asks for a useful stun opportunity and enough exposure for his area threat to matter. Neither description alone establishes which hero is stronger overall; the answer depends on lineup, positioning, and how teammates can capitalize.
How to judge Rat King against an initiator in your lineup
Do not rely on a broad “initiator” label as if it meant every hero starts fights the same way. The useful comparison is how each kit gets into the relevant position, what disruption it creates, and whether allies can convert that moment into a kill or objective. Deadlock.io’s role guide also cautions that even a durable initiator needs follow-up.

- Look at access: Does the other hero reach a priority target or position more directly than Rat King’s described advance-and-pressure approach?
- Compare the disruption: Is the other kit’s pull, lockdown, or dive a more direct opening, or does it primarily threaten an area?
- Account for the response: Rat King has a barrier and an ally-supporting banner effect; check whether the other hero can stay in the fight or protect teammates in a comparable way.
- Check follow-up: A disruption tool matters most when teammates can act during its opening. Rat King’s target weakening and area pressure may offer a different kind of follow-up window than a single-target pick.
What the evidence does—and does not—support about other heroes
The available current hero-specific descriptions are not sufficient to make a detailed comparison with Bebop, Dynamo, Lash, or Mo & Krill. Their precise current abilities, reach, and survivability are not established here, so assigning them a specific place in a ranked list of “initiators” would overstate what is known. The role guide is an unofficial reference, not a formal Valve taxonomy; it recommends judging a hero’s contribution to the particular team rather than assuming a fixed category.
