The Raspberry Pi AI Camera is a $70 camera module developed jointly by Raspberry Pi and Sony Semiconductor Solutions. Its Sony IMX500 sensor has an integrated neural-network accelerator, so supported vision models can run on the camera rather than requiring a separate AI accelerator. It works with Raspberry Pi 5 and other Raspberry Pi computers, and developers can use included MobileNet SSD and PoseNet examples or deploy custom models.

What is the Raspberry Pi AI Camera?

Announced on September 30, 2024, the Raspberry Pi AI Camera combines an image sensor and neural-network accelerator in a camera module for Raspberry Pi projects. Sony supplies the approximately 12.3-megapixel IMX500 Intelligent Vision Sensor; an RP2040 microcontroller handles neural-network and firmware management. The design lets supported inference run on the camera, reducing the need for a separate accelerator for those workloads.

That does not make the module a general-purpose AI computer: the camera runs compatible vision models, while a Raspberry Pi board and software handle the broader application. Raspberry Pi describes the module as built around an image sensor with an integrated AI accelerator in its launch announcement.

Specifications and imaging modes

Raspberry Pi’s launch announcement lists two headline modes: 4056×3040 at 10 frames per second, or 2028×1520 at 30 frames per second. Sony’s launch release gives a different frame rate for the latter mode—40 frames per second—so the exact figure depends on which manufacturer’s specification is being quoted. For a project where capture rate is critical, check the relevant manufacturer documentation and software configuration rather than assuming the figures are interchangeable.

Raspberry Pi AI Camera
  • 12.3 MP Sony IMX500 Intelligent Vision Sensor with a powerful neural network accelerator
  • Integrated low-power inference engine
  • Integrated RP2040 for neural network and firmware management
  • Pre-loaded with MobileNet machine vision model
  • Sensor modes: 4056×3040 at 10fps, 2028×1520 at 30fps
  • Sensor: Sony IMX500 Intelligent Vision Sensor, approximately 12.3 megapixels.
  • Field of view: 78 degrees.
  • Focus: Manually adjustable.
  • On-module control: RP2040 microcontroller for neural-network and firmware management.

These are headline camera specifications, not a comparative performance test. The available manufacturer information does not establish an independent speed ranking against a conventional camera paired with an accelerator.

Does the Sony IMX500 camera work with Raspberry Pi 5?

Yes. Raspberry Pi says the AI Camera works with all Raspberry Pi computers, including Raspberry Pi 5, and connects through the standard camera connection. The official setup documentation demonstrates use with Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Raspberry Pi 5 and covers Raspberry Pi camera software, including rpicam-apps and Picamera2.

For Raspberry Pi 5, follow the current official camera setup instructions and confirm you have the appropriate camera connection and ribbon cable for your board. The camera’s compatibility does not mean every model or software workflow is automatically supported; model conversion and the documented inference path matter.

Can you run your own AI model on it?

Yes, provided the model is prepared for the IMX500 workflow. The camera documentation offers pre-packaged MobileNet SSD and PoseNet models as starting points, then describes converting and uploading custom neural-network models. Inference results can be accessed as metadata in rpicam-apps and Picamera2, allowing a Raspberry Pi application to use detections or pose results without treating the camera as a standalone computer.

  1. Set up the camera: connect it to a supported Raspberry Pi and follow the official AI Camera installation instructions.
  2. Try a supplied model: run the documented MobileNet SSD or PoseNet example to confirm capture and inference work in your software stack.
  3. Prepare a custom model: use the conversion and upload process described in the camera documentation; an arbitrary model file is not automatically ready to run on the sensor.
  4. Build the application: read inference metadata through rpicam-apps or Picamera2 and connect those results to the rest of your project.

Sony’s AITRIOS developer portal provides setup guidance, pretrained-model examples, no-code Brain Builder workflows, and materials on datasets and training. Sony positions AITRIOS as a route for developing and operating edge vision-AI systems at larger scale; it is relevant when a project grows beyond trying a model on one camera.

Do you need a separate AI accelerator HAT?

Not for supported inference workloads that the IMX500 can run on-camera. That is the module’s central distinction from a conventional Raspberry Pi camera that sends image data to a separate accelerator. On-sensor inference can simplify the hardware arrangement and keep processing local, but it does not guarantee lower latency, lower power use, or better accuracy than every alternative: the official materials cited here do not provide a complete independent benchmark.

Choose the AI Camera when its supported model workflow, imaging modes, and Raspberry Pi software compatibility fit the project. Consider a separate accelerator if your model, framework, throughput requirement, or broader compute needs are not met by the IMX500 path. Compare those options using the actual model and application rather than an unsupported general performance claim.
