If your computer is running short of memory and the problem is affecting work you need to do, buy a compatible RAM upgrade now rather than waiting for a near-term price crash. If your current memory is adequate and the upgrade is optional, waiting and watching prices is reasonable—but current evidence does not give a dependable date for a broad return to lower prices. This assessment reflects the U.S. market as of November 3, 2026; retail prices and forecasts can change.
What does the RAM market look like right now?
Memory prices are elevated and volatile, but the figures available are best treated as signals of direction, not quotes for a particular kit. A market index may combine different capacities, brands and listings; the price you see for a compatible kit can differ substantially.
| Measure | What it says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| DDR5 median, November 3, 2026 | US$19.77 per GB in NASDrives’ tracked sample | Index value, not a guaranteed retail quote |
| DDR4 median, November 3, 2026 | US$11.09 per GB in NASDrives’ tracked sample | Index value, not a guaranteed retail quote |
| TrendForce conventional DRAM contract-price outlook for 4Q26 | 10–15% quarter-over-quarter growth, in its September 30, 2026 forecast | A supplier-market forecast, not a prediction that every retail kit will rise by that amount |
NASDrives’ per-gigabyte figures show DDR5 costing more than DDR4 in that snapshot, but they do not establish what any one shopper should pay. RamList’s index also tracks DDR4 and DDR5 retail pricing; its blended headline index weights products according to what the tracked market is buying. Use indices to follow a trend, then compare current listings for the exact generation, capacity and form factor your system accepts.

Why are RAM prices high, and could they fall soon?
The short-term retail picture and the underlying supply outlook are different things. Spot prices can retreat from a peak while supply remains constrained and contract prices are forecast to rise. That combination supports the description “volatile and structurally expensive” more than either “prices can only rise” or “a crash is imminent.”
TrendForce attributes pressure to AI-server demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DRAM and high-capacity registered memory. Suppliers are directing advanced-process capacity toward those products, while expanding cleanroom, packaging and testing capacity takes time. TrendForce reported that DRAM industry revenue reached nearly US$154.73 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 59.5% quarter over quarter. Revenue growth is evidence of a strong market, but it is not itself a retail-price forecast. (TrendForce, September 7, 2026)
In its September 30 outlook, TrendForce projected 10–15% quarter-over-quarter growth in conventional DRAM contract prices for the fourth quarter of 2026. Its October report said spot prices had eased from their peaks, while consumer DRAM supply shortages were expected to persist and gradual quarterly increases were anticipated the following year. These are different market measures and outlooks: a spot-price dip does not mean that consumer retail prices have normalized. (TrendForce, September 30, 2026; TrendForce, October 2026 report)

Micron’s June 2026 outlook said industry DRAM bit shipments would be low to mid-single-digit in calendar 2026 and described supply-demand conditions for DRAM and NAND as likely to remain tight beyond calendar 2027. That is a company outlook, not a promise about the date or price at which a specific retail kit will become affordable. No reliable normalization date is established by these forecasts. (Micron Technology, June 24, 2026)
Should I buy RAM now or wait?
Base the decision on the cost of running short of memory, not on a prediction about the next price move. A needed upgrade is easier to justify when memory pressure is disrupting a real workload; an optional upgrade is easier to defer when the system still meets your needs.
Buy now if memory pressure is getting in the way
If the system is paging, stalling or failing a workload requirement because usable memory is insufficient, waiting solely for a hoped-for price collapse risks prolonging a problem with no clear end date. First confirm that memory capacity is the constraint rather than assuming every slowdown is caused by RAM. Then identify the compatible type and capacity and compare current listings for that exact category.

Wait if the upgrade is optional
If your current setup handles your normal workload and you have no near-term need for more capacity, waiting is a reasonable choice. Set a price you would consider acceptable, watch several retailers and revisit the decision periodically. The point is to wait for a price that works for your budget—not for a particular month that available evidence cannot promise will bring old prices back.

Recheck the whole budget if you are changing platforms
If you plan to replace or build a system soon, compare the cost of the complete platform rather than evaluating memory in isolation. A delay can expose you to changes in other component prices, and the platform you choose determines which generation of RAM it accepts. The unknowns here are substantial: your current memory, workload, platform, budget and purchase timing all affect the right choice.
How can I tell whether I need more RAM?
Look for repeatable memory pressure during the work that matters to you. One slow moment or a high memory-use reading by itself does not establish that buying RAM will solve the problem; check what is running and whether the symptoms recur under your usual workload.

- Check memory use while the problem is happening. On Windows, open Task Manager and select Performance, then Memory. On macOS, open Activity Monitor and select the Memory view. On Linux, a command such as
free -hreports memory use at that point in time; it is a snapshot, so inspect it while the relevant workload is active. - Match the reading to the symptom. Repeated slowdowns, heavy paging or a workload warning that coincides with memory pressure are stronger reasons to consider an upgrade than a single reading. If the system remains responsive and your usual apps fit comfortably, extra capacity may be a convenience rather than a pressing need.
- Check whether the workload itself can be adjusted. Closing unused applications or reducing the number of active browser tabs may relieve pressure temporarily. If the same required work consistently recreates the problem, a capacity upgrade may be more durable than relying on that workaround.
- Verify that memory is actually upgradeable. Some systems allow memory replacement or expansion and others do not. Confirm the exact computer or motherboard documentation before buying; the evidence here does not identify your device or establish its maximum supported capacity.
A RAM purchase should address a capacity shortfall, not serve as a general-purpose fix for every performance issue. The relevant question is whether the applications and tasks you actually run need more usable memory than your system can provide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I choose DDR4 or DDR5?
Choose the memory generation your existing or planned platform supports. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable bargain alternatives: Tom’s Guide states that DDR4 memory will not fit in a DDR5 motherboard. (Tom’s Guide on DDR4 in 2026)
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Extending a DDR4 system: DDR4 may be the lower-cost route when the existing platform accepts it. Compare the total price of the required kit, not just a per-gigabyte index figure.
- Upgrading a DDR5 system: Buy compatible DDR5; a lower DDR4 price does not make it usable in a DDR5 motherboard.
- Building a new system: Treat RAM generation as part of the platform decision. Confirm compatibility before shopping and compare platform-wide costs rather than selecting memory on price per gigabyte alone.
In each case, weigh four things together: platform compatibility, the capacity the workload needs, the total kit price and the cost of delaying a necessary upgrade. Clock speed or per-gigabyte price alone cannot settle the choice.

What should I check before ordering?
Once you decide that an upgrade is worthwhile, avoid turning a market-timing decision into a compatibility mistake. Confirm the system details first, then compare prices only among kits that match those requirements.
- Platform and generation: Confirm whether the motherboard or device supports DDR4 or DDR5. Do not assume one generation can replace the other.
- Device and form factor: Desktop memory and laptop memory may use different physical formats. For a laptop, check upgradeability and the supported form factor for the exact model.
- Capacity: Verify the system’s supported maximum and choose capacity based on the workload you need to run. The available market data does not establish one ideal capacity for every reader.
- Total price: Compare the full kit price across current listings, not only an index value or per-gigabyte figure. Prices and inventory are volatile.
- Timing: If you need the capacity for work or another near-term requirement, include the cost of continuing without it in your decision. If you do not, set a target and monitor listings without assuming a particular date will bring normalization.
For an older system, an appropriately matched DDR4 kit can be a practical extension if the device supports an upgrade. For a DDR5-compatible desktop, shop within the DDR5 category after confirming motherboard support; the phrase “32GB DDR5 RAM kit” is not a universal recommendation. Laptop buyers must separately verify the model’s upgradeability, form factor, supported generation and maximum capacity before considering a 32GB DDR4 SODIMM kit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will RAM prices go back down?
They can move down from a peak, and TrendForce reported that spot prices had retreated from their highs in October 2026. That does not establish when retail prices will normalize or whether they will return to a particular historical level.
Can adding RAM fix a slow computer?
Only if insufficient memory is contributing to the slowdown. If memory pressure is not present during the affected workload, a RAM purchase may not address the cause; identify the constraint before spending.
How much should I spend on a RAM upgrade?
There is no universal budget supported by the market indices, which are not quotes for a specific compatible kit. Set a ceiling based on your needs and compare the total price of eligible kits for your device.
Is a laptop RAM upgrade always possible?
No. Upgradeability varies by laptop model, so check the exact model’s documentation before ordering. A kit’s capacity and generation are not enough to confirm that it will work.
