The milestone records Koraput’s manufacturing contribution; it does not mean all 2,000 engines were the same model, nor does it establish that India has achieved complete aero-engine independence.
What HAL Koraput announced
At the 6 October 2026 event, Singh witnessed the delivery of Koraput’s 2,000th aero-engine. The Ministry of Defence describes the division’s propulsion-manufacturing contribution as spanning six decades. The event also brought two capacity-expansion plans: one for the AL-31FP and another for the Shakti engine. These are planned capacities, not reported annual production already achieved. Ministry of Defence event release
How the AL-31FP and Shakti plans differ
| Programme | Announced annual capacity | Stated investment | Requirement served |
|---|---|---|---|
| AL-31FP | Planned increase from 30 to 50 engines per year | ₹335 crore | Su-30MKI aircraft |
| Shakti, second production line | Up to 100 engines per year | ₹218 crore | Indigenous helicopter platforms, including Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and Prachand Light Combat Helicopter |
The Ministry’s announcement gives no detailed schedule for reaching these capacities. The two lines serve different engine programmes and aircraft requirements; their capacity figures do not make the engines interchangeable. Ministry of Defence event release Ministry of Defence event preview
What the AL-31FP contract says about Su-30MKI production
In September 2024, the Ministry announced a contract with HAL for 240 AL-31FP engines for Su-30MKI aircraft, to be manufactured at Koraput. That establishes a domestic manufacturing role for HAL at the facility. It does not establish that the AL-31FP design itself is indigenous. Ministry of Defence contract announcement

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why Singh described an engine ecosystem, not just a factory line
Singh’s 6 October speech framed propulsion capability as a chain that includes indigenous materials, design, processes, testing, manufacturing, and maintenance. He said in Hindi, “क्योंकि एक Engine Ecosystem केवल एक Assembly Line से नहीं बनता।” The English rendering—“Because an engine ecosystem is not made from an assembly line alone”—is a translation of that sentence. Rajnath Singh’s published speech
The distinction matters: a higher assembly capacity can expand production, but it is not by itself evidence of domestic control over every technology and input in an engine. The Ministry also says the government is pursuing an indigenous high-thrust engine programme with an investment of about ₹5,000 crore. The event materials do not set out its technical configuration, design milestones, or readiness schedule, so the investment should not be read as proof that a finished engine is near production. What the 2,000-engine milestone does—and does not—show
- It marks the cumulative delivery of 2,000 aero-engines from HAL Koraput, not 2,000 engines of one model.
- The AL-31FP and Shakti expansions are plans with announced annual capacity targets, not confirmation of current output at those levels.
- The Shakti line is intended to support Dhruv and Prachand helicopter requirements; the announcement does not provide technical specifications for the engine.
- The milestone and planned investments signal an effort to strengthen India’s propulsion manufacturing and wider capabilities. They do not, on their own, demonstrate complete aero-engine self-reliance.
