RAID, snapshots, and backups solve different NAS data-loss problems. RAID can keep a storage group operating through some disk failures; snapshots let you roll back to an earlier state; and a backup is a separate copy you can use if the NAS or its storage is lost. None is a substitute for the others.

What RAID, snapshots, and backups protect against

Method What it is for Useful recovery case Main limitation
RAID Redundancy within a storage group Keeping service available through some member-disk failures, depending on RAID level and configuration. It is not an independent copy. It does not reliably protect against accidental deletion, corruption, theft, fire, compromise, or every hardware failure. Synology warns that RAID crashes and hard-drive failures can still cause data loss even when a local multi-version copy is maintained (Synology).
Snapshot A point-in-time record retained by the storage system Restoring an earlier state or prior file or folder version after modification or deletion, as described in QNAP’s QTS snapshot guide. If the snapshot remains only on the affected NAS or pool, it shares that failure domain. Support depends on the NAS model, filesystem, and software.
Snapshot replication Replicating snapshots to another storage pool or NAS Keeping recovery points on a separate destination. QNAP documents local-pool and remote-NAS replication (QuTS hero guide). A local replica still shares the NAS. Remote replication depends on the destination, security, and retention. Protection details vary by product and software version.
Backup A recoverable copy sent to a separate destination Recovering data after loss or failure of the source NAS. Destinations can include an external device, another NAS, or cloud storage (Synology; QNAP). A backup job must be configured and monitored. Synchronization alone may copy unwanted changes or deletions to the other location.

How RAID helps—and where it stops

RAID combines disks into a storage group with a level of redundancy determined by its configuration. That redundancy can let a NAS continue operating through certain member-disk failures, but the tolerance is not the same across RAID levels or configurations. RAID is about availability and disk-failure tolerance, not an independent copy of your files.

Because RAID does not create a separate recovery copy, it cannot by itself undo a deletion or reliably recover from corruption, ransomware, theft, fire, or failure of the storage group. Synology’s guidance cautions that RAID and drive failures may still result in data loss, including where a local multi-version copy exists (Synology Knowledge Center).

How snapshots help you roll back

A snapshot records the state of a storage unit or shared folder at a particular time. Depending on the NAS and its configuration, you can use it to restore an earlier state or recover a previous version of a file or folder. That makes snapshots useful for quick rollback after unwanted edits or deletion.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A snapshot stored only on the NAS or pool it protects is not a separate backup. If that storage is lost or compromised, the snapshot may be lost or affected as well. QNAP’s QTS 5.0.x protection table distinguishes snapshots alone from local or remote Snapshot Replica protection for RAID group failure; that table is specific to QTS 5.0.x and should not be generalized to every NAS (QTS 5.0.x User Guide).

What snapshot replication adds

Snapshot replication sends recovery points to another storage pool or NAS. A second pool in the same NAS provides another location, but it still shares the NAS itself; a remote NAS creates a more separate destination. Neither arrangement is automatically equivalent to a well-managed backup: destination security, retention, and the ability to recover matter.

QNAP documents Snapshot Replica to a local pool or remote NAS, and its QTS 5.0.x table describes protection levels for that software version (QuTS hero guide; QTS 5.0.x User Guide). Check the documentation for your model and software before relying on a particular recovery case.

What makes a backup different

A backup is a copy written to a destination separate from the source data. That destination might be an external USB device, another NAS, or a cloud service. Unlike RAID redundancy or a snapshot that stays on the source storage, a separate backup can help recover data if the source NAS is lost.

A backup is only useful if the job runs successfully and the copy is retained in a recoverable form. Review job status and retention, and consider whether unwanted changes or deletions could propagate. QNAP describes Hybrid Backup Sync destinations including external devices, remote NAS, and cloud storage, and states, “Regular backup is crucial for data protection” (QuTS hero 5.0.x documentation).

How to combine them for a NAS

  1. Use RAID for disk-failure tolerance. Choose a configuration suited to your disks and availability needs, and understand which member-disk failures it can tolerate.
  2. Keep snapshots for convenient rollback. Set snapshot retention to match how far back you may need to recover, and check that your NAS supports the feature.
  3. Back up to a separate destination. Schedule a copy to an external device, another NAS, or a cloud service, then monitor job completion and retention.
  4. Keep at least one copy off-site where appropriate. A copy away from the NAS can address risks that affect the local site as well as the source device.
  5. Confirm compatibility and recovery steps. Check the current documentation for your NAS model, filesystem, and software version; test that your chosen recovery method can restore the data you need.

Synology and QNAP both recommend the 3-2-1 approach: three total copies, two storage media, and one copy off-site. This is vendor guidance, not a guarantee that any particular arrangement will be safe (Synology Knowledge Center; QNAP guide).

Check support before relying on snapshots

Snapshot and replication features are not universal across NAS devices. Synology says Snapshot Replication is limited to models that support Btrfs; confirm compatibility for your model and current software in the manufacturer’s documentation (Synology Knowledge Center). QNAP’s cited protection table applies to QTS 5.0.x, so verify current behavior for the version and model in use.
