1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Radxa NX5 is a 70 × 45 mm system-on-module (SoM) based on Rockchip’s RK3588S. It combines four Cortex-A76 and four Cortex-A55 CPU cores, a Mali-G610 MP4 GPU, LPDDR4X memory, optional onboard eMMC and a Radxa-specified NPU rated at up to 6 TOPS. It is an embedded module—not a complete single-board computer—so you need a compatible carrier board, such as Radxa’s separately sold NX5 IO Board, to access most ports and begin development.
That distinction determines the real cost and engineering effort. Choose the exact memory/storage SKU, carrier interfaces, software image and cooling solution for your workload rather than treating the 6-TOPS figure as a guaranteed application benchmark.

What the NX5 includes
Radxa’s module uses Rockchip’s RK3588S and a 260-pin SO-DIMM edge connector. The connector carries the system’s power and peripheral signals to a carrier or custom application board.
| Component | Radxa-stated specification | What it means in a design |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 4× Arm Cortex-A76 at 2.2–2.4 GHz and 4× Cortex-A55 at 1.8 GHz | Heterogeneous cores suit mixed operating-system, control and application workloads. |
| GPU | Arm Mali-G610 MP4 | Supports graphics and media workloads; verify the API level and driver support in the image you plan to deploy. |
| NPU | Up to 6 TOPS; INT4, INT8, INT16, FP16, BF16 and TF32 listed | A vendor capability ceiling, not an independent inference-speed result. |
| Memory | LPDDR4X, configurations up to 16 GB | Capacity depends on the selected SKU. |
| Storage | Optional onboard eMMC, described up to 512 GB in Radxa documentation | Confirm whether your ordered module includes eMMC and its capacity. |
| Size and connector | 70 × 45 mm; 260-pin SO-DIMM | Compact for a custom product, but it requires a carrier-board design. |
Radxa lists TensorFlow, Caffe, TFLite, PyTorch, ONNX NN and Android NN among supported frameworks. A framework being listed does not guarantee that a particular model will run without conversion, quantization or operator changes.

Why it is a module, not a ready-to-use computer
The NX5 exposes signals through its edge connector instead of providing the familiar ports of a standalone SBC. A carrier board supplies connectors, power regulation and any routing needed for your product. Radxa’s NX5 IO Board is the documented evaluation choice; a custom carrier is appropriate when you need a production-specific mechanical layout or connector set.
The IO Board is a separate purchase. Radxa’s quick-start guide defines the development kit as the NX5 module plus the IO Board and explicitly says the board must be purchased separately.
Interfaces you can design around
Radxa documents a broad interface set, but the carrier determines which are physically available. Some high-speed resources are shared, so you cannot assume every listed port can operate simultaneously at its maximum configuration.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Media: decoding up to 8K at 60 frames per second and encoding up to 8K at 30 frames per second are specified for supported codecs.
- Cameras: two 2-lane MIPI CSI interfaces or one 4-lane interface.
- Expansion: two single-lane PCIe 2.0 interfaces, two SATA ports, USB, UART, SPI, CAN, I2C and PWM.
- Networking: an integrated Gigabit Ethernet PHY; the carrier must provide the physical connector and power arrangement.
Radxa notes resource sharing among PCIe, USB 3 and SATA. Review the carrier schematic and pin-multiplexing documentation when simultaneous storage, USB and expansion connectivity matters. Display and codec figures are maximums for stated modes, not proof that all outputs can run concurrently at their maximum resolution and frame rate.
What the NX5 IO Board adds
For evaluation, Radxa’s IO Board provides HDMI, DisplayPort, four USB 3.0 host ports, micro-USB OTG, microSD, an M.2 E-Key slot for Wi-Fi/Bluetooth modules, Gigabit Ethernet with PoE support, two MIPI CSI connectors, a fan header and a 40-pin GPIO header. PoE support belongs to this carrier implementation; it does not establish that the bare NX5 module accepts PoE.
See the NX5 IO Board page for the board’s current connector and feature details.
How to get a development setup running
Use Radxa’s current quick-start instructions for image and flashing details. The documented preparation sequence is:
- Obtain an NX5 module and the separately sold IO Board.
- Prepare a 5 V DC 5525 power supply rated at 3 A or higher, as specified by the guide.
- Prepare boot media; the guide references the module’s onboard eMMC for setup.
- Connect a micro-USB data cable for flashing.
- Connect an HDMI cable and display if you need the graphical interface.
- Attach a keyboard and mouse for GUI operation.
- Install the Radxa-provided image appropriate to your target board and follow the documented flashing and first-boot steps.
The full procedure and current image instructions are in the NX5 Quick Start guide. The listed accessories are for the documented development workflow; a deployed product may use different boot media, display and input arrangements.

AI and media workloads: match claims to evidence
Radxa positions the NX5 for edge computing, machine vision, smart terminals and multimedia processing. Its documentation illustrates local video analytics, object detection and face-recognition workloads. These are intended or example applications, not independent measurements of throughput, accuracy, latency or power consumption.
The “up to 6 TOPS” NPU number is Radxa’s specification. Real performance depends on model architecture, precision, compiler conversion, operator coverage, memory traffic, thermal conditions and the software image. Benchmark the exact model and pipeline you will ship before selecting the module over another accelerator.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operating systems and software qualification
Radxa documentation lists Debian, Yocto, Buildroot and Android 14; the product material also references Radxa OS, Debian, Android and third-party images. Image availability does not by itself establish equal driver maturity for every peripheral. Verify camera, display, GPU/NPU runtime and carrier-specific support on the release you intend to maintain.
Thermal design is part of performance
Radxa specifies a recommended ambient range of 0–50°C and an 80°C temperature limit, above which clock speeds throttle. It recommends a heatsink or fan for continuous high-performance operation. Actual cooling requirements depend on sustained AI load, enclosure airflow, ambient temperature and carrier design.
The Radxa Heatsink 7010 is listed as an NX5-specific accessory. Treat it as a thermal option, not a universal requirement; validate junction temperature and sustained clocks in the finished enclosure.
Choosing the right NX5 configuration and carrier
- Memory and storage: select the exact LPDDR4X capacity and eMMC option required by your application; do not assume every advertised combination is stocked.
- AI stack: confirm precision, operators, conversion tools and measured performance for your model.
- I/O exposure: map camera lanes, displays, USB, SATA, PCIe and GPIO to the carrier schematic, including shared-resource limits.
- Software: check image maintenance and peripheral drivers for the operating system you will support.
- Thermals: test sustained workloads with the intended heatsink, fan and enclosure.
- Supply planning: Radxa’s 2023 product brief states availability is guaranteed until at least September 2033. This is a manufacturer lifecycle statement, not a guarantee of local reseller stock; confirm the current brief and regional supply before committing.
For purchasing, Radxa directs buyers to approved partners and provides region selection and a distributor-application route on its product page. Current price, inventory and retailer listings are not established by the specifications above.
Who should use it?
The NX5 makes sense when a compact embedded computer needs RK3588S-class CPU, GPU, media and NPU capabilities and you are prepared to integrate a carrier and thermal solution. It is less suitable when you want a plug-and-play desktop board, a guaranteed application-level AI benchmark or a fixed port layout without board-design work.
