Choose between specific checkpoints based on your workload, modality, license, deployment requirements, and measured performance on your own prompts. As of October 7, 2026, the official sources reviewed identify Qwen3.8 as the current Qwen open-model release stream and Meta Llama 4—Scout and Maverick—as Meta’s featured family; the available evidence does not provide a current, independent, apples-to-apples comparison of them.
What is the difference between Qwen and Llama?
Qwen is Alibaba Group’s family of language and multimodal models; it includes open-weight checkpoints as well as proprietary offerings. Llama is Meta’s model family. This comparison concerns open-weight models, not hosted proprietary Qwen services. “Open-weight” means model weights are available under stated terms; it does not by itself mean unrestricted use or identical licensing across releases.
| Decision point | Qwen | Llama |
|---|---|---|
| Current family references in official sources reviewed | Qwen3.8, with Qwen3.5 and Qwen3.6 also referenced in the current repository. The repository reports Qwen3.8 model releases in August 2026. | Llama 4, with Scout and Maverick highlighted by Meta. |
| Modality | Capabilities depend on the exact checkpoint; verify the model card and the runtime’s support for the input and output types you need. | Meta describes Llama 4 as natively multimodal. Scout and Maverick have different stated capabilities; validate the exact model in your application. |
| License | The Qwen3 repository says its open-weight models use Apache 2.0, but the Qwen3.8 repository directs users to the license supplied with each checkpoint. Check the actual weights’ terms. | Meta describes a bespoke Community License and acceptable-use terms. Review the license that governs the specific checkpoint. |
| Deployment routes | The Qwen3.8 repository documents local use and serving options including Transformers, llama.cpp, MLX for Apple Silicon, SGLang, and vLLM. Some examples cover Qwen3.5, so confirm compatibility for your checkpoint. | Meta describes availability through infrastructure partners. Check the provider, region, model variant, and serving terms you intend to use. |
| Current independent head-to-head result | Not established in the official sources reviewed. Vendor-reported results and older-generation reports do not substitute for a matched evaluation. | |
Which model fits your workload?
Start with the task, not the family name. A model that performs well on a general leaderboard can still be a poor fit for your domain, output format, latency target, or deployment environment.
Text, coding, and domain tasks
Test the exact candidate checkpoints with representative prompts: ordinary requests, difficult edge cases, your coding language or domain material, and examples where the model must admit uncertainty. Score correctness and consistency, not just whether an answer sounds fluent. For structured output, validate whether the model reliably produces the schema your application expects.

Images and other modalities
If your application needs images, audio, or video, confirm that the exact checkpoint accepts that modality and that your serving stack supports the required input path. Meta describes Llama 4 as natively multimodal and Maverick as an image-and-text model. Those are vendor capability descriptions, not a guarantee of quality in your workload. Do not infer a modality from the Qwen family label; check the individual Qwen model card.
Long-context applications
Meta states that Llama 4 Scout supports a 10-million-token context window. Treat this as Meta’s stated capability, not proof that a particular application can use that much context efficiently or accurately. Check the serving implementation, memory demand, latency, and answer quality at your intended prompt length. A nominal context limit is useful only if the model retains the information your task needs.

How should you interpret the published benchmark figures?
Meta’s Llama 4 page reports the following results for Scout and Maverick. They are Meta-reported evaluations, not an independent comparison with Qwen3.8.
| Benchmark | Maverick | Scout | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| MMMU image reasoning | 73.4 | 69.4 | Meta-reported; page accessed in 2026. |
| MathVista | 73.7 | 70.7 | Meta-reported; page accessed in 2026. |
| ChartQA | 90 | 88.8 | Meta-reported; page accessed in 2026. |
| LiveCodeBench | 43.4 | 32.8 | Meta labels the evaluation interval 10.01.2024–02.01.2025. |
| MMLU Pro | 80.5 | 74.3 | Meta-reported; page accessed in 2026. |
Meta says its Llama 4 results use zero-shot evaluation at temperature 0, without majority voting or parallel test-time compute. It says high-variance benchmarks such as GPQA Diamond and LiveCodeBench average multiple generations, and labels some long-context evaluations as internal runs. These methodological details matter when comparing figures across sources.

The Qwen2.5 technical report describes an earlier generation and says it used 18 trillion pretraining tokens. That is historical developer-reported information, not a Qwen3.8 result and not a current matched comparison against Llama 4. Do not use it to declare a contemporary winner.
What license applies to Qwen and Llama?
Check the license and acceptable-use rules for the exact weights before building a product, redistributing a model, or using outputs in another training process. Terms can differ by family, generation, and checkpoint.

- Qwen: The Qwen3 repository states that its open-weight models use Apache 2.0. The Qwen3.8 repository points users to the license file shipped with each model’s weights on Hugging Face or ModelScope. Do not assume the Qwen3 statement covers every Qwen generation or checkpoint.
- Llama: Meta describes a bespoke Community License and an acceptable-use policy. The Meta FAQ search result also describes a restriction involving use of model parts, including outputs, to train another AI model for Llama 2 and Llama 3. That version-specific clause should not be carried over to Llama 4 without checking Llama 4’s governing terms.
For either family, read the actual license and policy for the specific weights you will use. Confirm commercial-use conditions, redistribution rules, attribution or notice requirements, and any limits relevant to your application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you run Qwen or Llama yourself?
Both families have deployment paths, but the practical requirements depend on the checkpoint and serving setup. Before selecting a self-hosted checkpoint, estimate memory and throughput needs using its size, quantization, context length, concurrency, and speed target. Also test the runtime’s actual compatibility and measure latency under the load you expect. Meta’s statement that Scout is designed for single-H100-GPU efficiency is a vendor description, not an independent hardware guarantee or a consumer graphics-card recommendation.
Hosted inference can reduce the work of maintaining serving infrastructure, while self-hosting can offer more control over deployment. Compare the specific provider’s model availability, region, privacy terms, operational burden, and total cost; the family name alone does not settle that choice.
A practical way to choose
- Define the job. Write down the required tasks, input modalities, expected prompt length, output format, quality threshold, and latency target.
- Shortlist checkpoints. Select specific Qwen and Llama models that support those requirements. Record each model identifier and the date you checked its model card and license.
- Confirm terms and runtime support. Read the checkpoint’s license and acceptable-use rules, then verify that your chosen runtime or provider supports that exact model.
- Build a representative test set. Use real or carefully anonymized examples, including edge cases and known failure modes. Apply the same prompts, evaluation criteria, and serving conditions to each candidate.
- Measure the trade-offs. Assess task quality, consistency, format compliance, latency, memory use, throughput, and operating cost at the context length and concurrency you expect.
- Choose on evidence from your application. Prefer the checkpoint that meets your quality and operational requirements under acceptable terms. Recheck compatibility and licensing when changing model versions.
So, should you use Qwen or Llama?
Qwen may be the better fit when a particular Qwen checkpoint meets your task requirements and its license and deployment route work for your project. Llama may be the better fit when a particular Llama checkpoint meets those same constraints, including any modality or provider requirements. Neither conclusion follows from the family name alone: no current independent, identical-harness comparison in the sources reviewed establishes a Qwen3.8-versus-Llama 4 winner.
