Ten students from Queen’s University Belfast’s Queen’s Propulsion Lab have been selected for the first International Lunabotics Competition, reported for October 2026 at the University of Central Florida. Their prototype rover is designed to excavate lunar material, cross obstacles and use the material to build a wall. The team’s travel is supported by Queen’s Annual Fund, according to the university.
What is the International Lunabotics Competition?
It is a student robotics event focused on engineering machines for lunar construction tasks. Queen’s University Belfast says its team was selected after success at the UK Lunabotics competition earlier in 2026; the report does not give the UK event’s exact date or the team’s ranking.
Queen’s describes the October event as the very first International Lunabotics Competition. QPL Head of Robotics Caolán Boyle said the team had put hundreds of hours into preparing its rover and was waiting for the opportunity to test it in the competition’s lunar yard.
What will the Queen’s rover do?
The QPL machine is a prototype lunar construction rover, not flight hardware. The reported challenge is to dig up lunar material, drive across obstacles and use the excavated material to build a wall.

NASA’s annual Lunabotics Challenge provides broader context for why these tasks matter. NASA says student teams work on robots that can form berms from lunar regolith—the loose, fragmented material on the Moon. Berms could help protect landing and launch areas from blasts, shade cryogenic propellant tank farms, or shield nuclear power plants from radiation. Those are NASA’s stated applications for berm construction; Queen’s describes its own task as building a wall.
Where and when is the Queen’s team competing?
Queen’s reports that the International competition will take place at the University of Central Florida in October 2026. That schedule is distinct from NASA’s separately announced annual 2026 Lunabotics Challenge:

| International Lunabotics Competition reported by Queen’s | October 2026, University of Central Florida | Queen’s says its 10 students were selected for the first International competition. |
| NASA’s annual 2026 Lunabotics Challenge | Qualification: May 12–17, 2026, at UCF Exolith Lab in Orlando. Final: May 19–21, 2026, at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. | NASA’s published schedule for its annual challenge; it is not the October event described by Queen’s. |
UCF’s Florida Space Institute FAQ calls the October event the “2026 NASA International Lunabotics Championship” and identifies NASA, Caterpillar and UCF as organizers. The difference in event names and dates matters: Queen’s October report does not say the team attended NASA’s May qualification or final.
How the project fits NASA’s wider lunar robotics work
NASA says its annual Lunabotics Challenge has been held since 2010 and uses a two-semester format based on NASA systems-engineering processes. The competition is intended to give students practical experience in coding, engineering, manufacturing and fabrication. NASA also says student designs and data can inform solutions relevant to Artemis and future lunar infrastructure.

That context explains why excavation and moving regolith are useful engineering problems, but it does not make the Queen’s rover a NASA prototype or prove it is intended for use on the Moon. The university describes it as a student-built prototype for a competition.

Dr Charlie McCartan, academic lead at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, said the event would give students an authentic engineering experience and a chance to showcase Queen’s space-systems talent. The university’s report describes the students as preparing for the October event; it does not establish a score, placing or competition outcome.
