IFCO abrió su hub digital global en Pier01 de Tech Barcelona el 18 de noviembre de 2024. El equipo se concibió para aplicar inteligencia artificial e IoT a sus envases reutilizables de transporte y mejorar la información sobre su ubicación y estado. La apertura es un antecedente, no una inauguración reciente; las fuentes disponibles no confirman cuántas personas trabajan hoy en el centro ni qué productos concretos se desarrollaron allí.
Qué es el hub de IFCO en Barcelona
El hub es un equipo tecnológico integrado en el negocio de IFCO, no una tienda de dispositivos ni un producto dirigido al consumidor. La empresa anunció su apertura en Pier01, el espacio de Tech Barcelona, y su incorporación como Global Partner de la asociación. IFCO presentó el centro como una inversión para reforzar sus capacidades digitales y avanzar en soluciones para la cadena de suministro. Tech Barcelona anunció la apertura el 18 de noviembre de 2024.
El equipo comenzó con 25 empleados. IFCO previó entonces que llegaría a 50 durante 2025, pero esa cifra era una meta y no está confirmada como resultado. Tampoco se ha publicado en las fuentes citadas una plantilla actual del hub.
Qué debía hacer con los envases reutilizables
La misión anunciada para el equipo era integrar IA e IoT en los envases reutilizables de transporte (ERT) de IFCO. La información de ubicación y estado debía ayudar a los clientes a entender dónde están esos activos y a optimizar su uso y la logística asociada. Son objetivos descritos por la empresa al anunciar el centro, no resultados cuantificados de su funcionamiento.

La necesidad se entiende por el modelo de pooling de IFCO: los envases circulan entre participantes de la cadena de suministro en lugar de ser de un solo uso. Según la empresa, los ERT se reparan cuando es posible, se reutilizan y, al final de su vida útil, se reciclan dentro del sistema. IFCO afirma que sus envases pueden utilizarse hasta 120 veces. La compañía describe su modelo y sus soluciones digitales en su página corporativa.
Qué tecnologías y servicios digitales menciona IFCO
IFCO presenta un portafolio que ha evolucionado con distintas tecnologías de identificación y seguimiento. La empresa menciona RFID, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), sensores de temperatura y sensores de impacto. Su plataforma MyIFCO permite gestionar pedidos, seguir entregas, consultar inventario y generar informes. En 2025 lanzó Tracking-as-a-Service, que combina BLE, RFID y códigos GRAI.

La tecnología de seguimiento puede aportar visibilidad sobre activos reutilizables que pasan por distintos puntos de una cadena de suministro. Combinada con reparación y reutilización, esa información podría ayudar a planificar la disponibilidad de envases y su circulación. El anuncio del hub explica esa intención, pero no aporta una comparación con proveedores alternativos ni una evaluación cuantificada del impacto ambiental de los ERT durante su ciclo de vida.
