Classical computers remain the practical choice for general-purpose computing. Quantum computers are specialized systems that use qubits and quantum effects to pursue an advantage on selected problems—not faster replacements for laptops, phones, or servers. Their most promising uses include simulating quantum systems, while many proposed applications remain research-stage.

What is the difference between quantum and classical computing?

The core difference is how each system represents and processes information. Classical computers use bits with definite values of 0 or 1. Quantum computers use qubits, whose states are described by quantum mechanics. That difference enables a distinct set of algorithms, but it does not make quantum computers universally faster.

Aspect Classical computing Quantum computing
Basic unit A bit has a definite value of 0 or 1. A qubit is a quantum state that can be described using a combination of basis states.
How computation is organized General-purpose processors execute classical algorithms across a wide range of tasks. Quantum algorithms use quantum operations to shape the probabilities of measurement outcomes for particular tasks.
Typical role Everyday computing, data handling, and broad general-purpose workloads. Specialized problem-solving, often as one part of a workflow that also uses classical computers.
Practical maturity Mature, broadly deployed technology. Developing hardware; reliability, scaling, and useful application-specific performance remain challenges.

How do qubits, superposition, and entanglement work?

Superposition means a qubit can be described as a combination of the 0 and 1 basis states. Entanglement means the joint states of multiple qubits can be linked in ways that have no direct classical equivalent. Quantum algorithms use these effects to manipulate information and influence which results are likely to appear when the system is measured.

Superposition does not let a quantum computer return every possible answer from a single run. Measurement produces an outcome, and an algorithm must be designed to make useful outcomes more likely. The result may also need to be checked or processed by classical computing.

What are quantum computers good for?

Simulating materials and chemistry

Quantum systems are a promising target because the materials and molecules being studied also follow quantum mechanics. Researchers are investigating whether quantum computers can model some of this behavior in ways that are difficult for classical methods. That is a potential application area, not evidence that quantum computers are already a routine tool for industrial materials research or chemistry.

Drug discovery and scientific research

NIST lists drug discovery among fields that could benefit from quantum computing. This points to possible future scientific impact; it does not mean current quantum machines routinely discover drugs in ordinary pharmaceutical workflows. Any practical contribution would depend on whether a specific task can be solved usefully and reliably compared with established methods.

Selected optimization and algorithmic problems

Researchers and providers investigate quantum approaches to selected optimization and other algorithmic problems. The existence of a quantum algorithm, or success on a small demonstration, does not guarantee faster or better results for a real business problem. The relevant comparison is with strong classical methods on the same concrete task, including accuracy, time, cost, and practical value.

Cryptography: a future risk, not a current cracking capability

A sufficiently capable future quantum computer could threaten some public-key cryptography. NIST says the timing of such a machine is unknown; current quantum computers should not be described as able to break deployed encryption. NIST has published three final post-quantum encryption standards that are ready for use, making migration planning the practical response to the long-term risk. See NIST’s explanation of the risk and standards.

Why quantum computers are not faster replacements

A quantum computer is not a drop-in substitute for a classical processor. In many workflows, classical computers prepare and compile inputs, schedule work, and process results; a quantum processing unit (QPU) handles the quantum portion. This is why quantum computing is often described as hybrid computing. IBM’s quantum computing context explains this relationship.

Quantum hardware is error-prone compared with mature classical computing and takes substantial engineering to operate. Fault tolerance, scaling, and reliable performance on application-specific tasks remain important challenges. IBM describes ongoing work to improve quantum utility and identify suitable applications; some areas, such as solving partial differential equations, are framed as longer-term work tied to fault-tolerant systems and integration with high-performance computing. See IBM’s overview of quantum computing.

How to judge a claimed quantum advantage

“Quantum advantage” should describe a measured comparison for a specific task, not a general speed ranking between two kinds of computers. Google’s framework for developing quantum applications highlights the gap between an abstract candidate problem and a practical application.

  1. Define the task. Identify the concrete problem instance and what a useful result would accomplish.
  2. Check the algorithm and baseline. Ask whether a quantum algorithm applies and compare it with the best relevant classical methods, not an outdated or unsuitable baseline.
  3. Examine demonstrated performance. Look for results on the specific instance, with enough detail to judge whether they transfer to the intended workflow.
  4. Account for accuracy and errors. Consider whether the answer is reliable enough for the task and how errors are detected or handled.
  5. Include the whole workflow. Account for the classical computing around the QPU, as well as the hardware and engineering needed to run the task.
  6. Measure practical value. Compare useful outcome, time, and cost. A scientifically interesting demonstration alone does not establish an advantage that matters in production.

Which should you use?

For everyday tasks and general-purpose software, use classical computing. Quantum computing is relevant when a specific problem may benefit from a quantum algorithm and the approach can be tested against a strong classical baseline. For now, treat quantum applications as specialized and evaluate claims by demonstrated results on the task that matters—not by a promise of universal speed.
