Use a QR code when you want a visible, camera-scannable route from print to web content. Choose an NFC tag when a deliberate tap is part of the experience and the tag can be integrated into the printed item. Neither is a universal winner: the right choice depends on the audience’s phones, the physical setting, and what readers receive after they scan or tap.
QR code vs. NFC tag: the practical differences
| Decision | QR code | NFC tag |
|---|---|---|
| What the reader does | Aims a phone camera at a visible code, then follows the resulting link. Apple documents scanning QR codes with Camera or Code Scanner: Apple QR-scanning instructions. | Brings a compatible phone near the tag. Android describes how its operating system detects NFC tags, subject to supported hardware, settings, tag data, OS version, and app handling: Android NFC documentation. |
| What must be visible or present | The code is part of the printed artwork. Readers need a legible print and a clear line of sight. | A physical tag must be attached to or embedded in the printed item. It may be visually unobtrusive, so indicate where to tap and what the tap provides. |
| What both can deliver | Either can lead to online content. GS1 Digital Link is carrier-agnostic and supports QR and NFC, among other carriers. GS1 says full-URL QR codes and NFC tags can be accessed with a smartphone without an app specifically aware of Digital Link: GS1 Digital Link overview. | |
| Commonly described uses | Consumer engagement, web content, product details, promotions, and GS1 Digital Link. | Product-linked experiences such as accessing manuals, checking authenticity, reordering consumables, registering warranties, and contacting customer support, as described by the NFC Forum retail white paper. |
| Main practical constraint | A scan depends on the reader seeing and successfully scanning the printed code, and trusting the destination. | A tap depends on a compatible phone, NFC being available and enabled, a reachable tag, and a worthwhile destination. |
Apple’s App Clips documentation describes both scanning a QR or App Clip Code and holding an iPhone near an NFC tag; these are examples of Apple-supported interactions, not a guarantee about every phone or campaign: Apple App Clips.
When a printed QR code is the better fit
Make the action obvious to passersby
A visible code can sit beside a short instruction such as “Scan for the menu” or “Scan to register.” That makes the next action apparent without requiring a person to guess where a tap point is. QR is a practical choice for flyers, posters, brochures, and other pieces where readers can see the printed surface and use a camera.
Prefer a broad, familiar scan path
GS1’s 2025 explanation of 2D options says it currently prefers QR Code with Digital Link for consumer engagement because default camera apps can scan QR codes and connect to web resources: GS1’s 2D barcode options. That is a standards organization’s stated preference for consumer engagement, not proof that QR produces higher response rates in every campaign.

For product packaging used at retail checkout, note a separate qualification: GS1 says not all retail systems can scan and process 2D barcodes, and some point-of-sale use cases still need a 1D code during the transition. This retail systems issue should not be assumed to apply to every marketing flyer.
When an NFC tag is the better fit
Make the physical tap meaningful
NFC suits an item where touching a particular spot feels natural: a product label, package, card, or other printed object that readers can approach. Its value is not the tap by itself; it is a useful follow-on action, such as opening a manual, starting warranty registration, or reaching support.

Mark the tap point and explain the payoff
Because a tag can be hidden inside a material, show where to tap and tell readers what they will get. The NFC Forum’s retail guidance recommends making the tap location and benefit clear, piloting in a limited area, and measuring effectiveness. It also advises: “Only create an NFC experience when you are driving the consumer to a truly valuable experience.” This is industry guidance from the NFC Forum’s 2018 white paper, not an independent comparative study.
When it makes sense to offer both
QR and NFC can point to the same web destination while serving different readers. A visible QR can provide access to people whose phones do not support NFC, whose NFC setting is off, or who prefer scanning. A marked NFC point can make tapping available to people who find that interaction more natural. Use both only when each route has a clear purpose; multiple carriers are allowed in GS1’s Digital Link approach, and GS1 US describes line-of-sight carriers such as QR or Data Matrix alongside NFC and other non-line-of-sight carriers: GS1 US on 2D barcodes.

If the print area or budget cannot support both, choose the route that the intended audience can identify and use most easily. A short printed URL can also serve as an alternate access path, particularly where a reader cannot scan or tap.
How to choose for a campaign
- Define the destination. Decide what the reader should be able to do after interacting: view details, access a manual, register a product, redeem an offer, or reach support. Avoid adding NFC or QR if the linked experience offers no clear value.
- Consider the physical setting. Ask whether readers can see the printed item, approach it, and use a phone comfortably. A visible QR needs a legible print and line of sight; a tag needs a physical integration and an identifiable tap point.
- Check the target devices. Test QR scanning and NFC behavior on the phones expected in the audience. Android notes that NFC detection generally occurs when the screen is unlocked unless NFC is disabled in Settings; behavior also depends on the device and tag handling. Apple documents QR scanning through Camera or Code Scanner, but platform documentation does not establish compatibility for every device or print condition.
- Choose the carrier or combination. Use QR for a straightforward visible scan path, NFC for a purposeful tap interaction, or both when they address distinct access needs. Consider printing a short URL if it provides a useful fallback.
- Test the finished item. Try the actual printed material under expected lighting, viewing distance, and handling conditions, using representative phones. Confirm the destination works and that instructions make the action clear.
- Measure the deployment. Compare project-specific tag and print costs, setup and maintenance needs, and campaign outcomes. The available sources establish no universal cost or conversion advantage for QR or NFC.
Safety and reliability depend on implementation
A QR code is not trustworthy merely because it is printed on a branded item. GS1 warns that QR codes can be misused and advises common sense; brands should maintain a trustworthy destination, and readers should review a link before proceeding: GS1 guidance on QR codes. Likewise, an NFC tap should not be treated as inherently safe simply because it uses a tag. Evaluate the actual destination, tag controls, and authentication design rather than assuming either interface is secure by default.

- 32-Bit Password & ECC Originality Signature — Industrial-grade security with a 32-bit password to block unauthorized reads/writes, plus built-in ECC originality signature to verify authenticity and prevent cloning — ideal for access control, membership cards, and product authentication
- Instant Tap Response & Full Platform Coverage — Fast_Read command captures the complete NDEF message in a single scan, triggering URLs, texts, emails, SMS, WiFi links, and app actions instantly. Works with all NFC-enabled iPhones (iPhone 7 and newer), Android, and Windows smartphones
- Professional Tips for Smooth Writing — For best results: ① Use NXP TagWriter (iOS) or NFC Tools/TagMo (Android); ② Remove metal/magnetic phone cases for stable contact; ③ If write fails due to password protection, unlock first with 0x1B AUTH command; ④ For “tag not supported” errors on iPhone, erase/format NDEF via TagWriter before writing; ⑤ Keep tags away from bending or freezing during storage
For either format, keep the destination useful and maintained. If campaign content changes, manage the link so that the printed interaction does not lead readers to an obsolete or broken experience.
