Quick answer: For a documented, customizable QR code endpoint, start with QuickChart. Use goQR/QRServer when you also need a QR-reading endpoint, or QRCode Monkey when you need PNG, SVG, PDF, or EPS output through RapidAPI. A static code cannot be edited after printing; a dynamic QR service uses a provider-controlled redirect that can be changed later.

The often-circulated “11 QR code APIs” label needs qualification. Current first-party documentation establishes three providers in detail. A secondary list updated August 17, 2026 names five additional services, but does not establish their current endpoints, quotas, authentication, pricing, or commercial terms. They are listed below as verification leads rather than as confirmed recommendations.

Choose static or dynamic before choosing an API

Static QR generation

A static image contains the destination or text itself. Once it is printed, changing that content requires generating—and normally reprinting—a new image. Static generation is appropriate for a Wi-Fi credential, a fixed URL, a ticket payload, contact details, or any value that will not change.

Managed dynamic QR codes

A dynamic arrangement encodes a provider-managed redirect. You can change the destination after distribution and, where the provider supports it, pause a code and inspect scan activity. QuickChart documents this as a separate dynamic QR API; its ordinary /qr image endpoint is static and should not be described as editable.

Documented providers at a glance

Provider Request and authentication Formats Controls and related features Dynamic destination
QuickChart GET or JSON POST to https://quickchart.io/qr; the documented image endpoint does not require an access token. PNG by default, SVG, JPG/JPEG, or base64. Size, margin, colors, finder colors, module and finder styles, error correction, centered image, captions, validation, URL generation, and batch APIs. Separate managed service at qr.quickchart.io/docs, with destination editing, activation controls, and analytics.
goQR/QRServer GET or POST to the create command; data is required. PNG, GIF, JPEG, SVG, and EPS-related formats documented by the provider. Size, character set, error correction, foreground/background color, margins, and quiet zone. Also provides a read/decode command. Not documented for the create endpoint.
QRCode Monkey GET and POST API access through RapidAPI; confirm the current RapidAPI product, key, quota, and subscription before integrating. PNG, SVG, PDF, and EPS. Custom QR generation is documented; the available styling controls depend on the current API product. Not established in the cited API documentation.

1. QuickChart: the broadest documented generation API

QuickChart’s public endpoint is https://quickchart.io/qr. Supply a required text value and choose an output with the format parameter. Keep query values URL-encoded; URLs, ampersands, and non-ASCII text otherwise get interpreted as separate parameters or corrupted characters.

GET request

curl -G "https://quickchart.io/qr"
  --data-urlencode "text=https://example.com/products?id=42&ref=poster"
  --data "size=600"
  --data "format=svg"
  -o product-qr.svg

PNG is the default. The documentation also lists SVG, JPG/JPEG, and base64 responses. For a browser or HTML page, you can use the generated URL as an image source; for a build pipeline, save the response as a binary file.

JSON POST avoids query-string escaping

curl -X POST "https://quickchart.io/qr"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{
    "text": "https://example.com/products?id=42&ref=poster",
    "size": 600,
    "format": "png",
    "ecLevel": "M",
    "margin": 4
  }'
  -o product-qr.png

QuickChart documents POSTing the same parameters as JSON. This is usually safer when the payload contains punctuation, Unicode, or a long URL.

Python

import requests

payload = {
    "text": "https://example.com/products?id=42&ref=poster",
    "size": 600,
    "format": "png",
    "ecLevel": "M",
    "margin": 4,
}
r = requests.post("https://quickchart.io/qr", json=payload, timeout=30)
r.raise_for_status()
with open("product-qr.png", "wb") as f:
    f.write(r.content)

Node.js

const payload = {
  text: 'https://example.com/products?id=42&ref=poster',
  size: 600,
  format: 'png',
  ecLevel: 'M',
  margin: 4
};

const res = await fetch('https://quickchart.io/qr', {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: { 'content-type': 'application/json' },
  body: JSON.stringify(payload)
});
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('product-qr.png', data));

Useful styling parameters

  • Size and margin: set the pixel size and the quiet area around the symbol.
  • Color: choose dark and light colors, plus separate finder-pattern colors.
  • Module and finder styles: alter the shape treatment for branded designs.
  • Error correction: select the documented correction level; higher correction can preserve readability when a code is partly obscured, but it reduces the payload capacity available for the same physical size.
  • Centered image and captions: add a logo or explanatory text only after testing the final asset on the intended device and print size.

QuickChart also documents URL validation, URL generation, batches, and a QR Code Batch API. Use the batch interface when your application has many codes rather than opening hundreds of unrelated requests.

QuickChart dynamic QR service

The managed service at qr.quickchart.io/docs is a different product from /qr. It creates a redirect that can be edited, activated, or paused later and provides scan analytics. The documentation cautions that scans are visits to the redirect link, counts may be sampled or delayed, location is approximate, and daily unique scans represent observed devices per code per UTC day—not necessarily distinct people.

2. goQR/QRServer: generation plus decoding

goQR documents two commands: create-qr-code and read-qr-code. The create endpoint accepts GET or POST and requires data. Its documentation recommends URL-encoding the value and keeping content short when possible.

Create an image

curl -G "https://api.qrserver.com/v1/create-qr-code/"
  --data-urlencode "data=https://example.com/invoice/42"
  --data "size=500"
  --data "format=png"
  --data "ecc=M"
  -o invoice-42.png

The provider documents PNG, GIF, JPEG, SVG, and EPS-related formats, along with size, character-set, error-correction, foreground/background color, margin, and quiet-zone settings. Check the current create-command page for exact parameter spelling before putting a setting into production: goqr.me/api/doc/create-qr-code/.

Read or decode a QR image

The read command is useful for an ingestion or QA service that receives an image and needs to extract its payload. The API overview at goqr.me/api/ describes both commands; follow its current upload format rather than assuming that a create request can be reused for decoding.

Operational and privacy notes

The create documentation says request origins (referrer and IP) are recorded while QR contents are not, and asks services expecting regularly more than 10,000 requests per day to contact the provider. Those statements appeared on a page crawled roughly 2.5 years before this article date, so verify the current terms and obtain written confirmation for a high-volume or sensitive deployment. The same terms allow abusive requests to be rejected; do not treat the service as an unconditional “no limit” endpoint.

3. QRCode Monkey: custom files through RapidAPI

QRCode Monkey documents a custom QR API with GET and POST support. Its API page lists binary PNG, SVG, PDF, and EPS output and says access is provided through RapidAPI: qrcode-monkey.com/qr-code-api-with-logo/.

Because the page does not establish a universal current endpoint, authentication header, quota, subscription price, or commercial-use allowance, obtain those values from the current RapidAPI listing before writing client code. Treat the RapidAPI plan and QRCode Monkey’s API terms as separate checks, and save a sample response in your integration tests so a format or content-type change is detected.

The remaining names in the “11 APIs” lists

A Geekflare comparison updated August 17, 2026 names eight services: GoQR, QuickChart, Neutrino, Cloudmersive, API Ninjas, QRCode Monkey, QR.io, and QRCG by Bitly. The first-party material available for this article verifies the three providers above. The other five are useful leads, not confirmed current recommendations:

A production checklist for any QR API

  1. Define the payload. Decide whether it is a fixed URL, text, contact record, Wi-Fi configuration, or another standard payload. Keep it concise when possible; long data produces denser symbols that are harder to scan at a small physical size.
  2. Choose static or dynamic. Use static generation when the value is permanent. Use a managed redirect only when post-print destination changes or provider analytics justify the extra dependency.
  3. Encode the request correctly. URL-encode GET parameters or send JSON POST. Never concatenate unescaped user input into a query string.
  4. Set correction and quiet space. Preserve the documented quiet zone. Do not let a logo, caption, border, or background pattern touch the modules.
  5. Scan-test the final asset. Test the exact file at its intended printed or on-screen size, from expected viewing distances and under ordinary lighting. Test more than one phone model when the code is customer-facing.
  6. Store provenance. Keep the payload, provider, request parameters, generated file hash, and generation date so a replacement can be reproduced.
  7. Monitor failures. Record HTTP status, content type, response length, and provider error text. A successful HTTP response that contains an HTML error page is not a usable QR image.

Troubleshooting common failures

The image is blank or not a QR code

Inspect the response Content-Type and first bytes before saving it as an image. Check that the required field (text for QuickChart or data for goQR) is present and that the request was not truncated by an unescaped ampersand.

The scanner cannot read a branded code

Restore strong contrast, enlarge the symbol, increase the quiet zone, remove the logo or caption, or use a stronger documented error-correction level. Scan the final export, not an untouched design preview.

A URL works in a browser but not in the QR

Encode the complete URL, including its query string. With GET requests, use --data-urlencode or an equivalent library function. JSON POST avoids query parsing problems.

A dynamic code no longer redirects

Check whether the managed code is paused, inactive, or pointing at a changed destination. This failure mode does not apply to a truly static image; static content can only be changed by issuing a new image.

High-volume requests are rejected or throttled

Review the provider’s current limits and terms, use documented batch endpoints where available, add bounded retries for transient errors, and contact the provider before regularly exceeding goQR’s documented 10,000-request-per-day contact threshold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change a static QR code after it is printed?

No. Its payload is encoded in the image. You need a new image and generally a new print run; a managed dynamic redirect is the alternative.

Which documented API can decode QR images as well as create them?

goQR/QRServer documents both create and read commands. QuickChart and QRCode Monkey are documented here for generation.

Should I use GET or POST for QR generation?

GET is convenient for short values and image URLs. Use JSON POST when the payload contains query punctuation, Unicode, or enough data that URL encoding becomes error-prone.

Are the five additional names guaranteed to be available APIs?

No. They come from a secondary list. Verify each provider’s current first-party endpoint, authentication, formats, limits, privacy terms, and pricing before relying on it.
