One stalled task often points to that torrent’s peers, tracker, or status; all tasks failing suggests checking something shared, such as the client, network, firewall, or storage. This is a diagnostic shortcut, not a guarantee. Work through the checks below one at a time, starting with the task’s status before changing network settings.
1. Check whether the torrent is paused or queued
Open the task in qBittorrent and check its status before troubleshooting the connection. A paused task will not transfer data until you resume it. Also check whether the option “Do not start the download automatically” is enabled: a task may be waiting for you to start it manually.
qBittorrent distinguishes states such as paused, stalled, downloading, and error. The status can help narrow the issue, but “stalled” alone does not identify the cause. See the qBittorrent FAQ and its options documentation.
2. Check whether the swarm has useful sources
Look at the torrent’s seeders and peers. If only one torrent is stuck, it may have too few active sources, or none sharing the pieces you need. A client cannot download pieces that nobody is sharing. BitTorrent Inc.’s support page identifies poor torrent health as a common cause of downloads stopping in its product; that is not a measured statistic about qBittorrent. Use torrents only when you have the right to access their content. If the swarm has no useful sources, changing local settings cannot make missing pieces available.
3. Inspect the tracker status
In the task’s tracker information, check whether trackers are responding or reporting errors. A tracker problem is different from a disk write error, and neither necessarily means the torrent itself is paused.
qBittorrent documents an “Always announce to all trackers” option for situations where the client is contacting only one tracker. Consider it only when relevant to the torrent. Do not add arbitrary trackers, and check the rules for a private torrent before changing tracker behavior. The qBittorrent FAQ explains the option.

4. Check whether the network route is the problem
If several torrents fail, check for a broader connection issue. The qBittorrent troubleshooting guide recommends simplifying the path between the computer and the internet connection to help isolate the source. Where practical, compare results with another computer or test with fewer intermediate devices. Change one condition at a time and note whether the torrent’s status changes.

5. Test VPN or proxy settings carefully
A VPN or proxy configuration can affect whether qBittorrent connects. As a temporary diagnostic test, the qBittorrent guide suggests trying the connection with the VPN or proxy disabled. Treat this as a test to identify a cause, not a reason to leave your connection unprotected or expose activity. Restore your usual protection after the test.

Some VPN providers offer port forwarding, but availability depends on the provider. Check its documentation rather than assuming the feature is available or required.
6. Review firewall and incoming-port conditions
Firewall or security-software rules can interfere with connections. Check that qBittorrent is permitted by the firewall you use. The application’s settings also include a listening port and UPnP/NAT-PMP options; the qBittorrent options documentation describes them.
Manual router port forwarding may be relevant in some network setups, but it is not a universal fix. It will not restore an unhealthy swarm or repair a missing destination drive, and you should not change router settings without understanding the effect on your network. 7. Verify the save location and storage
Check that the selected save path exists, is writable, and has enough free space. If the destination is an external drive, confirm it is connected and available to the computer. A path or device problem can stop a transfer even when peers and trackers are reachable.
qBittorrent’s pre-allocation option assigns disk space in advance, which can help avoid running out of space partway through a download; it does not fix an unavailable drive or other storage fault. If you see a disk write, disk overload, CRC, or unavailable-device error, investigate the path and drive rather than assuming you need to replace the hardware. 8. Update qBittorrent and gather details if it still fails
If the checks above do not resolve the problem, use the latest qBittorrent version available for your system, as the project’s troubleshooting guide recommends. Updating is a sensible maintenance step, not a guaranteed fix.
If you need help on the official forum, collect the details the guide requests so others can distinguish a task-specific problem from a shared connection or storage issue:
- Your operating system and qBittorrent version.
- Whether the torrent uses public or private trackers, and the tracker status shown.
- Your network type and layout, including router or switch details.
- Whether the computer is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- The destination drive and the results of any storage-health checks.
