Yes—Python ultimately won TIOBE’s 2024 Programming Language of the Year award. But when InfoWorld published “Python a shoo-in for Tiobe language of the year” on December 9, 2024, the result was still a forecast: TIOBE had not yet announced the winner. The award recognizes the language whose TIOBE rating rose the most during the calendar year; it is not a judgment that the language is objectively best.
Was Python really a shoo-in?
In its December 9, 2024 report, InfoWorld described Python as the likely winner, while noting that TIOBE would announce its choice in January. That made the headline a prediction, not a report of a result already confirmed. TIOBE’s official index and hall of fame now list Python as the 2024 Programming Language of the Year, so the forecast proved correct.
What did the 2024 comparison show?
InfoWorld reported the following increases in TIOBE ratings for 2024 in its December 9, 2024 forecast. These are period-specific figures from that report, not current adoption statistics.

Because TIOBE’s award rule is based on the largest rise in rating over the year, this comparison explains why Python was favored. It does not show that Python had the highest rating in every month, nor does it measure how many developers used each language.

What does TIOBE’s index measure?
TIOBE describes its index as an indicator of programming-language popularity. Its monthly ratings draw on estimates related to skilled engineers worldwide, courses, third-party vendors, and popular websites. TIOBE explicitly says the index does not identify the best language and does not measure lines of code written.
That distinction matters: a rising index rating supports a claim about momentum under TIOBE’s method, not a universal verdict on language quality, suitability for a particular project, or developer preference.

Why was Python expected to rise?
In the InfoWorld report, TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen credited Python’s support for AI and data mining, its libraries, and its ease of learning: “Python is unstoppable thanks to its support for AI and data mining, its large set of libraries, and its ease of learning.” Jansen also cautioned that changing conditions could slow that rise: “Now that some say that the AI bubble is about to burst plus the fact that demand for fast languages is rapidly increasing, Python might start to plateau.” InfoWorld is the source for both statements.

No. The award is a retrospective recognition of the largest rating increase during 2024. It should not be treated as a current ranking or a forecast of future performance. The TIOBE page’s monthly ranking changes over time; the page material cited here presents a June 2025 ranking table, which is not evidence of Python’s position in October 2026. A current-rank claim requires a dated monthly snapshot.
