Push is the better choice when your email provider supports it and you want new messages delivered promptly. Fetch is the practical alternative when Push is unavailable or you prefer checks on a schedule. Apple’s “Automatically” option is not instant: it fetches in the background only when your iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.
Push vs. Fetch: what changes?
These settings control how Mail gets new messages. With Push, a supported email provider can send new mail to your iPhone as it arrives. With Fetch, the iPhone checks for new mail according to the selected schedule, or when you check manually. Availability depends on the account: Apple says, “If Push isn’t available as a setting, your account will default to Fetch.” Apple Support

| Push | A supported account can deliver new messages as they arrive. | Prompt delivery, when the account offers Push. |
| Fetch | Mail checks for new messages on a selected schedule or when requested manually. | Accounts without Push, or people who prefer scheduled checks. |
| Automatically | Mail fetches in the background only while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. | People who are comfortable with background checks limited to those conditions. |
Which setting should you choose?
Choose Push for supported accounts when timing matters
If you want new mail to arrive promptly and the account has a Push option, select Push. It is not a universal setting across every provider: if the option is absent, Apple says the account defaults to Fetch.
Choose a timed Fetch schedule when Push is unavailable
Fetch lets you set a schedule for checking mail. Apple’s cited instructions do not specify one universal numerical interval, so choose from the schedule options shown on your iPhone rather than assuming a particular number of minutes.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Use Automatically only if its conditions suit you
Automatically fetches in the background only when the iPhone is both charging and connected to Wi-Fi. If you want checks more often when those conditions do not apply, choose a timed Fetch schedule instead. Apple iPhone User Guide
How to change the Mail setting
- Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Data.
- Choose the overall setting or Fetch schedule you want.
- Review each account’s options and select Push for an account if that control is available.
Menu labels can vary with iOS version and provider configuration. If an account has no Push control, use the available Fetch option.

Why Push may be unavailable or not working
Push support depends on the email provider and account. For an iCloud Mail account, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends turning on Push in Fetch New Data and checking the iCloud account’s Push setting. The same guidance describes a multi-account configuration in which Push can be used with one account at a time; that is specific to Apple’s iCloud troubleshooting instructions, not a general rule for every provider. Apple documents that Low Power Mode can reduce or disable some features, including Mail fetch. That shows that power-saving mode can affect Mail retrieval, but it does not establish that Fetch uses less battery than Push—or the reverse. Apple’s cited support materials provide no controlled comparison, battery-life percentage, or hours saved for either setting. Choose based on account support and delivery timing, not an assumed battery advantage. Apple: Use Low Power Mode to save battery life
