To list browser builds installed in a Puppeteer-managed cache, run npx @puppeteer/browsers list. In JavaScript, use getInstalledBrowsers({ cacheDir }) from @puppeteer/browsers. Both inspect a specified Puppeteer browser cache; neither is a general scan of every browser installed on your computer. To locate system Chrome for a release channel, use Puppeteer’s separate system-browser lookup instead.

List browsers in the Puppeteer cache from the command line

The quickest manual check is the @puppeteer/browsers CLI command:

npx @puppeteer/browsers list

This lists browser installations managed in the package’s browser cache. If you install or configure browsers in a non-default cache directory, make sure the listing command and your installation setup refer to the same cache; otherwise, the output may not reflect the directory you expect.

List cached browsers in application code

For an inventory in a Node.js application, call getInstalledBrowsers and pass the cache directory to inspect. It returns a promise that resolves to an array of installed-browser records.

import { getInstalledBrowsers } from '@puppeteer/browsers';

const browsers = await getInstalledBrowsers({ cacheDir: '/path/to/puppeteer-cache' });

for (const browser of browsers) {
  console.log({
    browser: browser.browser,
    buildId: browser.buildId,
    executablePath: browser.executablePath,
    installationPath: browser.path,
    platform: browser.platform,
  });
}

Replace /path/to/puppeteer-cache with the cache directory used by your setup. Each returned record includes the browser type, build ID, executable path, root installation path, and platform. Use the records returned by the API rather than constructing an InstalledBrowser yourself; its constructor is marked internal.

Choose the right lookup for the browser you need

Question Use What it finds
Which browser builds are in this Puppeteer cache? npx @puppeteer/browsers list or getInstalledBrowsers({ cacheDir }) Installations in the cache being inspected, not every browser on the host.
Where is system Chrome for a release channel? computeSystemExecutablePath or Puppeteer launch with channel Chrome at a known installation location for that channel. Puppeteer documents this system-browser approach for Chrome.
I already know the executable path I want to use. launch({ executablePath }) The executable at the specified path; compatibility is your responsibility.

These approaches solve different problems: cache inventory reports managed installations, while channel lookup resolves a system Chrome location. An explicit executable path bypasses discovery, but Puppeteer only guarantees compatibility with its bundled browser.

Keep the cache configuration consistent

Puppeteer’s browser configuration includes cacheDirectory, defaultBrowser, executablePath, and skipDownload. Documented environment variables can override several configuration values. When a listing appears empty or incomplete, verify that the directory passed as cacheDir is the same location used for installation and configuration.

Check browser compatibility before launching

Puppeteer’s supported-browser table is version-specific. The official documentation version consulted for this guide, 25.12.0, maps to Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57 and Firefox 156.0.1; those versions can change with Puppeteer releases. Check the compatibility table for the Puppeteer version you actually use. The documented browser types are chrome and firefox.

A browser appearing in a cache listing confirms its presence there; it does not by itself establish that it is compatible with your installed Puppeteer version. Prefer the Puppeteer-managed browser when compatibility matters, or verify the applicable version pairing before using a different executable.

Troubleshooting

  • The list is empty: Check that the package and the application are inspecting the intended cache directory. A system browser elsewhere on the machine will not appear merely because it is installed.
  • The expected browser is missing: Confirm that it was installed into the cache you are listing, and check the configured cacheDirectory and any environment-variable overrides.
  • You need Chrome installed outside the Puppeteer cache: Use computeSystemExecutablePath for a release channel, or launch with channel to ask Puppeteer to locate regular Chrome at a known channel location.
  • An explicit executable fails to launch or behaves unexpectedly: The path selects that binary but does not guarantee compatibility. Prefer Puppeteer’s bundled browser or verify compatibility against the table for your Puppeteer version.
  • A browser download did not happen: Check whether skipDownload is enabled and whether configuration or environment variables alter the expected download or cache behavior.

Or skip the browser setup:
