Pull The Plug, a UK campaign group, disrupted a London technology-industry dinner while an Nvidia executive was speaking, according to a Guardian report published on 6 October 2026. The action is one strand of a broader, varied movement: other campaigns have organized marches, occupations and policy advocacy around demands that range from pausing advanced AI development to improving democratic oversight.
What happened at the London dinner?
The Guardian reported that four Pull The Plug members interrupted a technology-industry dinner at London’s Claremont hotel. While an Nvidia executive was speaking, two activists unfurled a banner and protesters shouted, “Pull the plug on Nvidia” and “Pull the plug on Palantir.” The report also described a rally outside Palantir’s London headquarters on 1 October 2026.
The report does not include statements from Nvidia or Palantir about these specific actions, nor does it establish legal outcomes. The dinner disruption and headquarters rally should be understood as reported protest activity, not conflated with separate criminal attacks also mentioned in the reporting.
Who is Pull The Plug, and is it the whole movement?
One group’s direct-action approach
The Guardian reported that Pull The Plug launched in January 2026 and had about 300 members at the time of its October report. Its tactics include disrupting events connected to the AI industry. Activist Emma told the Guardian: “I want to show other people that they don’t have to feel powerless among all of these articles coming out [about AI doom],”

Pull The Plug is one organization among several, not a single representative of everyone opposing or seeking tighter controls on AI. PauseAI and Pull The Plug co-organized a London march on 28 February 2026 with other grassroots groups. PauseAI’s account says more than 300 people marched from OpenAI’s London office toward Google and Meta offices, calling on company CEOs to support a pause in advanced AI development and asking the UK government for stronger protective action. The attendance figure and organizers’ description of it as the largest protest of its kind are campaign-reported claims.

Stop The AI Race describes a roughly 400-person march in San Francisco on 11 July 2026 and an occupation of OpenAI offices beginning on 22 July. Those figures and event descriptions come from the campaign itself.
What concerns and demands are bringing people in?
The Guardian described several motivations among campaigners, rather than one shared reason: fears of catastrophic or loss-of-control risks; students’ concerns about jobs and career prospects; worries about cognitive effects and the quality of work; questions of democratic accountability; and opposition to data-center construction among conservationists. It also reported that some people redirected energy from climate protest groups and that data centers offer a physical focus for protest. These concerns should not be assumed to apply to every participant.

The demands differ too. PauseAI’s February release presents a pause in advanced AI development as a first step toward binding international regulation and calls for more UK government protection. The release describes Pull The Plug as focusing on harms from current AI products and democratic oversight. Stop The AI Race calls for a pause in new frontier-model training runs and an AI treaty. A campaign’s stated demand is not, by itself, evidence that the proposal has been adopted or that it would achieve its intended result.

“Pause” does not mean the same thing in every campaign’s proposal. Stop The AI Race says a practical pause would mean no new training runs of larger or more general frontier models, while existing models remain available and teams shift toward narrower applications or alignment research. That is the campaign’s description of its proposal, not a shared definition across the movement.

Other calls, including PauseAI’s, use the broader framing of pausing advanced AI development while seeking regulation and government action. The campaign descriptions do not establish a common scope, enforcement mechanism or timetable across organizations.
Do participation figures show the movement is growing?
Organizers and the Guardian report signs of increased participation, but the figures come from different sources and measure different things. They are not a common, independently audited dataset:

- Action to Protect Rural Scotland told the Guardian its supporter list rose from 400 to 4,000.
- PauseAI’s account of its 28 February London march says more than 300 people attended; Stop The AI Race’s account puts its 11 July San Francisco march at about 400.
These counts refer to sign-ups, a supporter list and campaign-reported event attendance, respectively; they should not be added together or treated as directly comparable measures of public opinion.
Why do activists disagree about disruptive tactics?
Some campaigners see direct action as a way to draw attention to AI risks and challenge a sense of powerlessness. Others worry that it could undermine their cause. PauseAI Global chief executive Maxime Fournes told the Guardian that disruptive tactics could alienate the public and give AI companies grounds to portray the movement as criminal. He also warned: “It’s quite likely that we will see anti-AI violence becoming more prominent as a driver to political violence,”

That warning is Fournes’s view, not proof that one protest strategy is more effective than another. The reported actions and campaign accounts do not establish which tactics, if any, change company decisions or government policy. Marches, occupations, public campaigns and direct disruption are distinct approaches, and the organizations pursuing them have different targets and demands.
