One leans on uncertainty, emotional pressure, and unsettling story implications. The other makes danger and the practical choices around it—exploring, solving puzzles, managing resources, and confronting or avoiding threats—central to play. A game can be both.
How the two horror styles differ
| Aspect | Psychological horror | Survival horror |
|---|---|---|
| Main emphasis | Unease, uncertainty, emotional disturbance, and troubling interpretations of events. | Vulnerability and decisions that affect whether the player can survive threats. |
| What the player does | Interprets what is happening and endures psychological or narrative pressure. | Explores, solves problems, manages resources, and decides whether to fight or evade danger. |
| Common ways to create tension | Atmosphere, mystery, unsettling scenarios, and uncertainty about what events mean. | Limited resources, puzzles, exploration, and risky encounters or escape decisions. |
| Can it include the other style? | Yes. Psychological tension can coexist with physical threats and survival mechanics. | Yes. Survival challenges can support a psychologically unsettling story. |
These are useful descriptions of design emphasis, not rigid or universally agreed genre rules. For example, psychological horror does not require the absence of monsters or combat, and survival horror is not defined only by scarce ammunition.

What makes a game psychological horror?
Psychological horror makes the player’s uncertainty and emotional response central. The story, atmosphere, and disturbing implications may matter as much as any direct threat. The player is often left interpreting events rather than receiving an immediate, complete explanation.
Konami explicitly describes SILENT HILL 2 as psychological horror. In its October 19, 2022 announcement, the publisher says protagonist James Sunderland searches the town for clues after receiving a letter from his long-dead wife, and describes the monsters and other manifestations as connected to James’s consciousness. That is a specific example of psychological horror, not a rule that every game in the style must follow. Read Konami’s announcement.

What makes a game survival horror?
Survival horror makes the player’s vulnerability and the work of staying alive important parts of play. Exploration and puzzle-solving can sit alongside resource management and dangerous encounters, forcing the player to make choices under pressure.
In a Capcom developer interview about Resident Evil 7 biohazard, producer Masachika Kawata and director Koshi Nakanishi identify fear and horror, environmental exploration, puzzle-solving, resource management, and combat as series pillars. They also explain that the game’s demo foregrounded horror and exploration. The example shows how survival-oriented play can still be designed to emphasize fear. Read the Capcom interview.

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
Survival horror does not mean you can never fight back
The player may be able to fight, but danger can make combat costly or uncertain. In a 2011 account of a presentation on Silent Hill: Downpour, design director Brian Gomez described the approach as deliberately disempowering the player, with slower pacing, puzzles, exploration, and a survivor protagonist. He framed this as a design choice, not a universal definition. Read the Game Developer report.
Designer Shinji Mikami’s perspective, as reported by PlayStation Universe in 2014, likewise allows players to defeat monsters, even if doing so is difficult. The report quotes Mikami saying, “The horror aspect of the game and the entertainment aspect of the game have to mix together.” Read the interview report.

Can a game be both?
Yes. The labels describe different dimensions: psychological horror focuses on the intended mental and emotional effect, while survival horror focuses on the threatened, resource-conscious play loop. A game can unsettle you with an ambiguous story while also asking you to explore carefully, solve puzzles, and decide how to handle a dangerous encounter.
That overlap is why it is more useful to describe a game’s particular features than to insist it belongs to only one box. Publisher genre pages can offer a helpful taxonomy, but labels are not a neutral academic standard; for example, Bandai Namco Europe groups titles under its own Horror Games category.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Which style should you choose?
- Choose psychological horror if you want narrative uncertainty, emotional unease, unsettling atmosphere, or a story that invites interpretation.
- Choose survival horror if you enjoy exploration, puzzles, resource decisions, and risky encounters where fighting or fleeing matters.
- Look for a blend if you want both a disturbing story and practical survival challenges. Many games combine these emphases.
Before choosing, consider which source of tension you want most: not knowing what events mean, managing the consequences of limited options, facing direct threats, or a mix of all three.
