Chrome Tab Groups can save and sync across devices, but they should not be your only record of important research. A closed group is documented as reopenable; deleting a group removes it across devices signed in to the same Google Account. Because there is no established failure rate or guaranteed recovery path, keep irreplaceable URLs in a separate bookmark folder or list as well.
What Chrome Tab Groups do—and what they do not guarantee
Google designed saved Tab Groups to make groups of tabs available across devices. In a September 2024 announcement, Google described the planned feature this way: “Coming soon to Chrome, you can save and sync your tab groups, so they are automatically available across all your desktop and mobile devices.” That announcement describes product intent; current Chrome Help explains the settings and actions users can rely on today.
On desktop, Chrome says group changes are automatically saved and synced when browsing history and tabs are synced with your Google Account. On Android, group edits sync across devices where you are signed in with the same account. That conditional behavior matters: if sync is off or a device is signed in to another account, its view may not match the others. See Google’s desktop tab instructions and Android tab instructions.
These documented features are not a guarantee that every group can always be recovered. Community posts include individual reports of groups disappearing, losing tabs, or reverting names, but they do not measure how often that happens. A Chromium issue search result also mentions work related to tabs missing from tab-group sync; its inaccessible issue details do not establish the current status, scope, or frequency. There is no attributable statistic showing a rate of Tab Group loss.

Close, delete, and ungroup are different actions
Choose the action that matches what you want to happen. Chrome’s documented behavior distinguishes putting a group away from removing it.

To set a group aside temporarily, choose Close group, not Delete group. Check the wording shown in your version of Chrome; labels and available controls can differ by platform or change over time.

What to do before relying on a group
- Confirm the account. Make sure Chrome is signed in to the Google Account you intend to use on your devices.
- Check sync. On desktop, confirm that browsing history and tabs are included in sync. On Android, check that the devices are signed in with the same account and that sync is available.
- Keep a separate URL record. Bookmark important tabs into a clearly named folder, or save their URLs in a separate list. This gives you another record of the links; it is not a promise that bookmarks are immune to every account or device problem. Google’s Android instructions include bookmarking selected tabs.
- Use Close group for temporary storage. Reopen the group from Chrome’s saved or closed-group surface rather than deleting it when you only want to clear the tabs from view.
If a group has disappeared
Check likely places before concluding that the URLs are gone. These checks may help locate open tabs or history, but Google Help does not promise they will restore deleted or missing group state.
- Look on other devices signed in to the same Google Account and inspect Chrome’s available tab and group surfaces.
- On Android, check the Inactive section. Google says inactive tabs and groups are automatically closed after six months; synced groups are closed, not deleted. This six-month behavior is specific to Android guidance, not a rule established for every platform.
- Search Chrome history for the pages you remember visiting, then save any recovered URLs somewhere separate.
- Check whether the group was deleted, rather than merely closed, and whether the device is using the expected account and sync settings.
A March 2025 Chrome Help Community thread describes a user’s saved groups disappearing; the reply suggested checking account activity and using bookmarks or a session-management extension in the future, while noting recovery might be unlikely in the circumstances described. That is community guidance, not a Google recovery policy or guarantee. A February 2026 Android community report describes groups disappearing, losing members, or changing names; its reply says there is no mobile restore checkpoint. These are anecdotes, not evidence of how often failures occur.

Why a separate backup is the sensible choice
A Tab Group is convenient live browser state; a bookmark folder or separately maintained URL list is a second record of the destinations you care about. Keeping that record separate reduces the chance that one missing group leaves you without the links. It does not make recovery certain, and it should not be confused with a tested backup system. If you consider a session-management extension, evaluate its sync, export, platform support, maintenance, and recovery options; no specific extension is established here as a guaranteed safeguard.
