A report says a rumored Sony handheld may include an SD card slot alongside internal NVMe storage—but Sony has not confirmed the device, and the card’s purpose and compatibility remain unknown. The storage idea comes from claims attributed to Moore’s Law Is Dead, as relayed by Notebookcheck on October 6, 2026.
What the PS6 handheld storage rumor claims
Notebookcheck reports that Moore’s Law Is Dead discussed schematics for a rumored Sony handheld that appear to show an SD card slot. The leaker reportedly believes the device’s base NVMe SSD may not be upgradeable, with an SD card offering a way to hold additional data. These are attributed claims, not specifications announced by Sony. Notebookcheck’s October 6, 2026 report also says Sony has not confirmed a PS6 handheld.
Could games load from the SD card?
The report relays speculation that an SD card might be too slow to load games directly, but could be used to move game data to the internal SSD. That is not a tested performance result or a confirmed feature. The report does not establish whether games could run from a card, whether copying would be required, or how such a transfer would work.
What is not known about card compatibility
The report names no card format, speed class, capacity limit, compatibility policy, or supported use. It is therefore not possible to identify a card that would work with the rumored device or recommend a performance tier for it. Whether Sony would require a particular standard or allow other cards with limitations is also unknown.

What to check if Sony announces the device
If the handheld is officially announced, its storage documentation would need to answer several practical questions before buyers could choose a card:
- Which card format and capacities are supported?
- Are there minimum read-speed requirements or vendor compatibility restrictions?
- Can games run directly from the card, or must data be copied to internal storage?
- Can the internal NVMe SSD be upgraded, and if so, under what requirements?
Until those details are confirmed, treat the SD-card slot and its possible role as rumor rather than a buying specification.
