Choose the console around the games you want to play, the library and friends you already have, and whether you use discs—not a headline specification. PS5 is the stronger fit if you want PlayStation exclusives, DualSense features in supported games, or continuity with a PS4 library. Xbox Series X is the stronger fit if you value Xbox backward compatibility, supported Smart Delivery games, Xbox One accessory carryover, or the Xbox subscription ecosystem. Neither is a universal winner, and game performance varies by title.
Start with the games and people you care about
Make a short list of games you expect to play, then check which console each is available on and where your friends play. Some games are exclusive to one platform; others are available on both. A console’s overall library matters less than whether it runs the specific games you want.
Also consider where you have already bought games. PS5 supports a large portion of the PS4 library, while Xbox Series X supports games from multiple Xbox generations. Compatibility is not universal, so check each important title rather than assuming an entire older library will carry over.
Choose PS5 if PlayStation fits your library
Sony says PS5 can play over 8,500 PS4 games, and selected games can benefit from Game Boost. That is Sony’s compatibility claim, not a guarantee for every PS4 title. Check a game’s listing or compatibility status before buying the console for a particular legacy game. Sony also describes PlayStation console exclusives and DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for supported games. Sony’s PS5 product page
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
Choose Xbox Series X if Xbox fits your library
Microsoft says Series X supports thousands of games across four Xbox generations. Xbox One progress, achievements, friends, and accessories carry over, and supported Smart Delivery games provide the best available version for the console being used. These benefits depend on the particular game or accessory; confirm support for the items you care about. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page

Choose the right disc configuration
If you own physical games, borrow or lend discs, buy used copies, or watch Blu-ray movies, make sure the exact console configuration has a drive. A digital edition cannot use a disc library unless its model supports an optional drive and you acquire and pair that drive as required.

PS5 configurations
Sony lists the standard PS5 with a 1TB drive and support for PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray discs. Its Digital Edition is listed at 825GB and has no drive as sold. Sony describes an optional drive for CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups; an internet connection is required to pair it during setup. Check the model group before purchasing a drive. The figures are nominal storage, not the amount available for games: the manual says part of the storage is reserved. Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual
Xbox Series X configurations
Microsoft lists a 1TB Carbon Black model with a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, a 1TB all-digital edition, and a 2TB Galaxy Black model with a drive. Verify the edition before checkout if disc use matters to you. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page

Account for subscriptions and recurring costs
Compare the games you will actually play against the current local plan terms, then consider the cost over the time you expect to own the console. A subscription can be useful if its catalog suits you, but a catalog listing is not a permanent promise that a particular game will remain available.
PlayStation Plus
Sony offers multiple membership plans with tier-dependent benefits, which can include the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, cloud streaming, and trials. Sony says most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus, with some games exempt; check the requirement for each game. Xbox Game Pass
Microsoft promotes Game Pass as a way to access a library of games. Plan contents, first-party release timing, prices, and regional availability can change, so check the current plan details and whether the games you want are included. Do not assume a particular title is included based only on the service name.
Understand the performance claims
Both consoles can deliver high-resolution and high-frame-rate gaming, but a specification describes capability, not what every game will achieve. Resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, and other enhancements depend on the specific game, console model, and selected mode. Your display also needs to support the mode you want.

Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists an 8-core/16-thread Zen 2 CPU, a 10 TFLOPS RDNA-based GPU, and 16GB GDDR6 for the models it covers. Microsoft lists a 12 TFLOPS RDNA 2 GPU, 16GB GDDR6, 4K gaming capability, and up to 120 FPS for Series X. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparisons or a prediction of which console will run a particular game better. A teraflops figure alone cannot settle the choice.
For a higher-performance PlayStation option, Sony lists PS5 Pro with a 2TB built-in SSD and enhancements for supported games. Sony describes 60fps or up to 120fps with 4K output and ray tracing for compatible titles, and says results vary by game. It says PS5 Pro plays all PS5 games and over 8,500 PS4 games, with a small number of PS4 compatibility exceptions. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan storage expansion around how you play
Both consoles can run short of space if you keep many large games installed. Compare the cost and capacity of an expansion option with how often you want to uninstall and reinstall games.
- PS5: You can add an M.2 SSD that meets Sony’s requirements. Check the manual for compatibility and installation requirements before buying.
- Xbox Series X: Microsoft lists a separately sold Series X|S Storage Expansion Card that matches internal storage performance. An external USB 3.1 HDD is another option, but it is not the same as the speed-matched expansion card. Check Microsoft’s rules for storing and playing each game type before choosing a drive.
Check Sony’s announced physical-game policy
Sony’s current US PS5 page says that from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. The page says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is a future policy announcement, not a statement that PS5 will stop playing existing discs. If you are planning a purchase far ahead, check Sony’s page for updates. Sony’s PS5 product page
Quick Recap
Make the decision with this checklist
- List your must-play games. Check each game’s platforms and compatibility, including any older games you want to keep playing.
- Check your existing library and accessories. Identify the purchases, saves, friends, and accessories you expect to carry over, then confirm support for each one.
- Decide whether you need a disc drive. Include physical games, used-game purchases, borrowing, and movie playback in the decision; verify the exact model.
- Compare subscription plans you would actually use. Check the current local price, multiplayer requirement, catalog, and terms rather than choosing on a service name alone.
- Check your TV or monitor. Confirm its resolution, refresh rate, HDMI features, and VRR support against the games and modes you want.
- Compare the full setup cost. Include the console configuration, subscription, and any storage expansion you expect to need; check regional listings for current prices and bundles.
