Choose PS5 Pro if a game you plan to play has a Pro mode you specifically want and you value its potential image-quality or frame-rate improvements. Choose a standard PS5 if your priority is playing the PS5 library for less. Pro enhancements are title-specific, so the Pro label alone does not tell you how large a difference you will see.
What PS5 Pro changes—and what it does not
Both consoles play PS5 games. The Pro adds enhanced features in select titles, including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) image reconstruction, advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame rates. Sony says features vary by game; it does not promise that every upcoming game will look or run better on Pro.

These options are not a guarantee that every game combines higher resolution, ray tracing, and a higher frame rate at once. The developer chooses how to use the hardware, and the available modes and trade-offs can differ by title. Sony’s PS5 Pro features page describes the platform features and cautions that results vary.
Where PSSR fits
PSSR reconstructs an image to improve effective resolution and detail. On February 27, 2026, Sony Lead Architect Mark Cerny said the technology had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 titles. That is Sony’s dated count from that announcement, not a current total. Sony later described an upgraded PSSR version rolling out to named games, including Resident Evil Requiem, Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Crimson Desert. The available enhancement still depends on the individual game.

- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Developer descriptions illustrate why a game-by-game check matters. Housemarque said Saros uses updated PSSR and dynamic resolution to maintain a stable frame rate during hectic combat. BioWare’s technical director described improved image quality while maintaining stable frame rates in Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Fidelity and Performance modes. These are statements about those games, not independent benchmarks or guarantees for other titles.
How to judge support for upcoming games
A “PS5 Pro Enhanced” designation is a useful way to find compatible games, but it does not quantify resolution, frame rate, image stability, or how visible the upgrade will be on your display. Sony’s US PlayStation Store category has included upcoming and released games, and its contents can change. Check the individual game page and current developer or Sony details rather than treating a category listing as a performance comparison.
- Confirm the game and platform. Check that the game is announced for PS5 and review its current release information.
- Look for an explicit Pro designation. Sony’s official PS5 Pro features page and the PlayStation Store’s “PS5 Pro Enhanced Games” category can help identify supported titles.
- Find the actual mode details. Look for published resolution and frame-rate modes, ray-tracing options, PSSR support, and any stated trade-offs. If the developer has not shared these details, the size of the benefit is unknown.
- Match the feature to your screen. A 4K or 120 Hz display can make some supported visual or refresh-rate features relevant, but neither is required to play PS5 games. The result depends on the game as well as the display.
For example, Sony’s Marvel’s Wolverine page labels the game “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” That confirms the designation; it does not, by itself, establish a specific resolution, frame rate, or measurable difference from the standard PS5 version.

Sony’s US buying page lists these storage configurations. They are listed capacities; usable space and the room a particular game library requires are separate considerations.

Configuration and drive details are from Sony’s US buying page. The $699.99 figure is the Pro’s historical US launch MSRP, not a current price or a measure of today’s price gap. Compare current local prices and bundle contents before deciding.
Disc collections change the cost calculation
PS5 Pro is digital-only as sold. If you own disc games or want to watch discs, include the compatible removable drive in your comparison; it is sold separately. Sony says the drive for compatible slim Digital Edition and Pro systems plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs, and requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. Check Sony’s drive compatibility details for current requirements.
Storage and display are practical, not automatic, upgrades
The Pro’s listed 2 TB may reduce the need to manage or expand a large installed library, but game sizes and usable capacity matter. M.2 SSD expansion is optional; consult Sony’s current compatibility guidance before choosing a drive. Likewise, a 4K or 120 Hz television may help show supported features, but you do not need to buy a new television to use a PS5 Pro.

Choose PS5 Pro if
- You have specific upcoming games with confirmed Pro enhancements and want the best available image-quality or frame-rate options for them.
- You can see value in the Pro features on your display and are comfortable paying the current local premium.
- The 2 TB listed storage is useful for your installed library.
Choose a standard PS5 if
- Your main goal is access to the PS5 library rather than title-specific visual upgrades.
- The games you care about have no confirmed Pro details, or the published improvements would not change your experience.
- You want a disc configuration without adding a separate drive to the purchase.
Before buying, make a short list of the games you expect to play, verify each one’s current Pro support and published modes, check your display, and compare the exact local console and accessory prices. If a game has only the Pro label and no technical details, treat the magnitude of its upgrade as unknown.
