Choose PS5 Pro if you want the chance of better visuals or performance in games that specifically support its features, and your display can show the difference. Choose the standard PS5 if value matters more than those game-by-game upgrades. For Grand Theft Auto VI, PlayStation lists both consoles and labels the game “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” but has not published a Pro-specific resolution or frame-rate target.

What the PS5 Pro can—and cannot—promise

Sony promotes PS5 Pro features including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling, advanced ray tracing, and potentially higher or more consistent frame rates. Those are possibilities for supported games, not benefits guaranteed across every PS5 title. Sony says features are available only in selected games enhanced for Pro, vary by game, and may require a compatible display. See Sony’s PS5 Pro feature details.

That makes the Pro a title-specific upgrade rather than a blanket promise that every game will look or run better. A Pro-enhanced label confirms that a title is listed as enhanced; it does not, by itself, tell you the resolution, frame rate, graphics modes, or how much better the game performs. Check the game’s official details and patch notes for its actual implementation.

What is confirmed for GTA VI?

PlayStation’s US listing identifies Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player game set in Leonida and Vice City, lists PS5 and PS5 Pro as platforms, marks it “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” and gives a release date of November 19, 2026. The listing does not specify a Pro resolution, frame-rate mode, ray-tracing level, or comparison with standard PS5. Check the official GTA VI listing for updates.

If GTA VI is your main reason for buying a Pro, treat the badge as confirmation of enhanced status—not as evidence of a particular performance result. If a specific frame rate or image-quality difference matters to you, wait for game-specific technical details or measured comparisons rather than assuming what the badge means.

How to decide based on the games you plan to play

Pick PS5 Pro if its supported-game benefits matter to you

The Pro is the more compelling option if you care about image quality, ray tracing, or performance choices in games that explicitly support its features. Sony’s March 16, 2026 update discussed upgraded PSSR support and adoption by games including Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Crimson Desert, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, while noting that results vary by title. This shows the feature set evolving; it does not establish GTA VI’s performance details. Read Sony’s PSSR update.

Support can involve different features in different games. For example, in a September 24, 2024 PlayStation Blog feature, Ubisoft Technology Director Pierre Fortin described intended PS5 Pro use of ray-traced global illumination and PSSR for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. That launch-era description is not a current performance test or a guarantee of a particular result. Read the developer feature.

Pick standard PS5 if you want the better-value fit

A standard PS5 can be the better choice if the games you care about do not have Pro features you value, your display would not show the relevant differences, or the Pro’s added cost is not worth the potential improvement to you. The official GTA VI listing includes standard PS5 as well as PS5 Pro, so the Pro badge should not be read as saying the game is exclusive to Pro.

Match the console to your display

Before paying for a Pro, check your television or monitor’s resolution and refresh-rate capabilities against the features of the specific games you play. Sony notes that some enhanced features require a compatible display. If your screen cannot use the relevant output or high-frame-rate feature, part of the Pro’s potential advantage may not be visible to you. The precise benefit still depends on each game’s implementation.

Include storage, discs, and accessories in the real cost

Sony’s US Direct listing describes PS5 Pro as an all-digital console with 2TB of storage; it also says the disc drive and vertical stand are sold separately. These are product details, not a like-for-like price comparison with a standard PS5. Check current regional listings for console prices, bundles, stock, and accessory costs before deciding. See Sony’s US Direct PS5 Pro listing.

If you own physical PS5 or compatible PS4 games, or want to play movie discs, add the cost of a compatible detachable disc drive to your comparison. Sony’s drive manual lists supported disc formats, including PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray and compatible PS4 Blu-ray, as well as specified Blu-ray and DVD formats. Confirm the current accessory’s compatibility and supported media before buying. Check Sony’s disc-drive setup and compatibility information.

A quick PS5 vs. PS5 Pro checklist

  1. List the open-world games you expect to play. Check each official game page and its current patch notes for explicit Pro support and the features that support provides.
  2. Assess your display. Compare its resolution and refresh-rate capabilities with the specific game features you want to use.
  3. Account for physical media. If you need discs, include the separately sold compatible drive in the Pro’s total cost.
  4. Compare current local prices. Include only accessories you need, and check regional availability and bundles rather than relying on a stale price.
  5. If one unreleased game is driving the purchase, wait if you can. Recheck its release date and look for game-specific technical details or credible performance comparisons close to launch.
