If you’re happy to download every game from PlayStation Store, the PS5 Digital Edition may suit you better. The standard model also supports digital games, so choosing it doesn’t lock you into discs.
What’s the difference between PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition?
The main difference is the disc drive. Sony describes the Digital Edition as “An all-digital version of the PS5 console with no disc drive.” The standard PS5 includes a disc drive for compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs, as well as support for downloaded games. The Digital Edition is designed for games downloaded from PlayStation Store. Sony’s US PS5 comparison sets out these console options.

The storage figures are listed capacities, not the amount guaranteed to be free for games. Sony notes that system software and other functions reserve some SSD capacity, so usable space is lower. Sony’s PS5 storage guidance explains the reservation.
Which PS5 should you choose?
Choose the standard PS5 if discs matter to you
Get the standard model if you want to play compatible physical game discs, already own a disc collection, or expect to borrow or buy boxed games. It also lets you download digital games, so you can choose between physical and digital copies.

The included drive can also read supported disc video formats. If that matters, check that the particular format you want to watch is supported before buying; having a drive does not establish support for every kind of disc.
Choose the Digital Edition if you’re comfortable downloading games
The Digital Edition is a straightforward fit if you buy games digitally and don’t need to use physical game or video discs. Your game library comes from downloads rather than discs, and the console has no drive included.

Neither edition is universally cheaper over time. The better value depends on the prices and sales you find, any bundles available, and whether you buy, borrow, or collect physical games. Sony’s product information does not establish a single total-cost winner for every buyer.
Can you add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition?
Sony sells a detachable disc drive, but it is not a universal upgrade for every Digital Edition. Sony lists compatibility with specified newer model groups, including PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, and PS5 Pro. Check the full CFI model number on your console against Sony’s disc-drive setup instructions and the drive’s product listing before purchasing. An internet connection is required to pair the separately purchased drive during setup.

Because compatibility is model-specific, don’t assume that an older Digital Edition can be upgraded. If you know you’ll need discs, compare the exact console model and drive requirements before choosing an all-digital system.

Sony’s US product page lists 1 TB for the standard PS5 and 825 GB for the Digital Edition. Those are not promises of fully available space: system software and other functions use part of the SSD. If storage is important to your decision, compare the listed capacities while accounting for that reserved space.
