No—you do not need a headset to identify speakers in PS5 party voice chat. While in a party, press the PS button, open the voice chat card, then choose More > Display Who’s Speaking > Display Names. The console can show the names of active speakers on screen; the DualSense controller’s built-in microphone also lets you speak without a headset.
This setting is specifically for PlayStation party voice chat. Game voice chat and Discord use different features, so the same name-display control is not guaranteed in every chat. If you are trying to see who is talking, a headset is not a prerequisite or a fix for a hidden name display.
How do you show who’s speaking in PS5 party chat?
Turn on Display Names in the party’s voice chat card. PlayStation describes the feature as displaying the names of active speakers while chatting; it is an on-screen indicator, not a headset feature or an audio setting. PlayStation’s PS5 party voice chat guide documents the control and its location.
The setting answers a specific question: who is currently speaking in a PlayStation party? It does not make voices louder, choose where chat audio plays, or identify a speaker in every voice service. You can use the names without owning or connecting a headset.

If you are already in a party
- Press the PS button on the DualSense controller to open the control center.
- Select the ongoing voice chat card.
- Choose More > Display Who’s Speaking.
- Turn on Display Names.
- If you want to move the active-speaker indicator, adjust Position in the same feature area.
The names appear as people speak. Position controls where the indicator appears; it does not change who can be identified or how party audio is routed. If the menu is missing, first confirm that the open card is for a PlayStation party voice chat rather than a game’s own voice chat or a Discord call.
In other words, the two controls have separate jobs: Display Names turns on the names of active speakers, while Position lets you choose where that indicator appears. If you can see the indicator but it is inconveniently placed, try changing its position rather than looking for a headset setting. If no names appear, check that Display Names is on and that you are in the correct kind of chat.
If you are not in a party yet
Start from Game Base > Parties, join or create a party, and enter its voice chat. Once the chat is active, open its voice chat card from the control center and follow the menu path above. The setting is reached through the active party chat rather than through the console’s general sound controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis is why the order matters: the Display Names option is part of the voice chat card for an ongoing party conversation. If you are looking in general sound or headphone settings before joining the party, you are looking in the wrong place for speaker names. The documented route is to enter the party voice chat and open its card.
Does a headset enable the speaker-name display?
No. The display control is part of the PS5 party-chat interface, so buying or connecting a headset is not the fix if names are hidden. PlayStation’s documentation treats the display option separately from the console’s audio devices and headphone controls. The software setting is free; there is no headset purchase requirement for turning on Display Names.
A headset can still be useful for listening and talking, but those are separate needs:

- Identify a speaker: turn on Display Names in the party voice chat card.
- Send your own voice: the DualSense wireless controller has a built-in microphone, so a headset is not required simply to speak in a party.
- Hear chat audio: check the selected output device and sound settings if voices are inaudible.
PlayStation’s party voice chat support page covers the controller microphone and party controls. Its separate PS5 audio output guide explains output-device and headphone-audio controls. These settings address whether you hear audio, not whether the console displays a speaker’s name.
So the right answer depends on what is not working. If you want to see who is speaking, check the party card. If you want to speak, the controller microphone is an option; a headset is optional. If you want to hear other players, check audio output. Buying a PS5 compatible gaming headset is an optional voice-chat accessory choice, not a way to unlock speaker names. You do not need to buy a headset just to try this setting.
Does the same setting work in game chat or Discord?
No universal speaker-name switch is documented for all PS5 voice services. The available indicator depends on which chat you are using: PlayStation party chat, a game’s own voice chat, or Discord voice chat. This distinction is the most common reason someone may not find the party setting where they expect it.
PlayStation party voice chat
This is where Display Who’s Speaking and Display Names are documented. If you want the PS5 party’s active-speaker names, make sure you have opened the party voice chat card and enabled the option there. The position control also belongs to this documented party feature.
A game’s voice chat
Game voice chat is controlled by the individual game, and PlayStation does not promise that every party-chat feature is available in games. If you are speaking through a game’s in-game channel and cannot find the party display option, check the game’s own voice-chat interface or support information instead of assuming the PS5 party setting applies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First establish which channel you are using: a PS5 party chat is not the same thing as a game’s in-game voice chat. If the other players are connected through the game’s voice system, the PlayStation party card’s Display Names control may not be available there. The game determines its own voice-chat features; do not treat the party instructions as a universal setting.

Discord voice chat
Discord has a separate voice chat card. In its member list, the avatar of a speaking member lights up, which indicates activity without using the party-chat Display Names control. For PlayStation’s explanation of chat types and the Discord indicator, see its PS5 party voice chat guide.
That gives you a quick way to distinguish the services: party chat uses the Display Names option, Discord shows a speaking member’s illuminated avatar in its member list, and game chat depends on the game. If you are in Discord and looking for the party option, the different indicator is expected; switching on Display Names in the PS5 party card is not the Discord-specific method.
What should you check if you cannot hear chat or find the option?
Work out whether the problem is speaker identification, microphone input, audio output, or the chat service itself. A hidden name does not by itself show that a headset or microphone is faulty. Conversely, seeing an active speaker’s name does not prove that your audio output or microphone is configured correctly.
The names are not appearing
- Check that the active conversation is a PlayStation party voice chat, not a game’s in-game channel or Discord.
- Open the ongoing voice chat card from the control center, then check More > Display Who’s Speaking > Display Names.
- If the indicator is difficult to see where it currently appears, use Position to move it.
If you are not in an active party yet, start at Game Base > Parties, join or create a party, and enter its voice chat before looking for the setting. The route depends on the chat type and the active card; a general audio menu is not the documented location for speaker names.
You cannot hear other players
Check Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm that the intended output device is selected. Also confirm whether you are listening to party chat or game chat; being in one channel does not mean the other channel’s voices will be routed as expected. PlayStation’s PS5 voice chat troubleshooting guide covers chat and audio checks.
Keep this diagnosis separate from speaker identification. Display Names changes what is shown on screen; Audio Output concerns where sound is sent. If you can see the active speaker but cannot hear them, investigate output and chat selection rather than buying a headset to make names appear. If you can hear them but cannot see their names, revisit the party card setting instead.

Other players cannot hear you
Check the microphone settings and input device, including whether the controller microphone is muted. If you are using the DualSense microphone, a headset is not required for party voice input, but the microphone still needs to be available as the selected input and unmuted. Keep this separate from the Display Names control: changing speaker-name visibility will not repair a muted or incorrectly routed microphone.
That is another useful distinction: a microphone is for your outgoing voice, while the active-speaker display identifies other people on screen. A problem with one does not mean the other depends on a headset. For input problems, check microphone settings; for missing names, check the party voice chat card.
Is speaker identification the same as chat transcription?
No. Display Names identifies the active speaker on screen; transcription converts other players’ voice chat into text. Transcription is available in parties and supported games, while transcription in game chat depends on the game.
Transcription may help when you need to read what players say, but it is not required to see who is speaking. It answers a different question from the active-speaker indicator: transcription displays converted speech, while Display Names shows who is currently speaking in party chat. If you are using a game’s chat, transcription availability depends on that game, just as game voice-chat features vary.
PlayStation describes transcription and its availability conditions in its PS5 accessibility settings guide. Treat it as an optional accessibility feature, not a prerequisite, workaround, or headset replacement needed to enable speaker names.

Can I report a PS5 voice-chat comment if I don’t know who said it?
PlayStation’s reporting flow includes an I’m Unsure choice when you cannot identify who was talking. That option is part of reporting and does not change the party chat’s speaker-name display setting. See PlayStation’s guide to reporting behaviour on PS5.

Does PlayStation specify whether Display Names stays on for future parties?
The support instructions explain how to enable the option in an active party voice chat, but do not specify whether the preference persists across later parties. If you do not see names in a later chat, check the option in that chat’s voice card.
Can I identify a speaker by their voice if the name indicator is hard to see?
The PS5 party feature is an on-screen identification aid; it does not alter anyone’s voice or provide a separate voice-matching function. If visual information is more useful, PS5 chat transcription can convert other players’ speech into text where the feature is supported.
Can I see who is talking without a headset?
Yes. In an active PlayStation party voice chat, open the voice chat card and turn on More > Display Who’s Speaking > Display Names. A headset is not required for this on-screen feature.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need a headset to speak in a PS5 party?
No. The DualSense wireless controller has a built-in microphone. A headset is optional for listening and talking, but it does not enable the speaker-name display.
Why can’t I find Display Names while using game chat or Discord?
The documented Display Names control is for PlayStation party voice chat. Game voice-chat features depend on the game. Discord uses a separate voice chat card, where a speaking member’s avatar lights up in the member list.
Will turning on Display Names fix chat audio?
No. Display Names is an on-screen party-chat control. For inaudible voices, check Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm whether you are using party chat or game chat. For microphone problems, check the input device and microphone settings.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You do not need a headset to identify active speakers in PS5 party chat. Open the party’s voice chat card and enable More > Display Who’s Speaking > Display Names; adjust Position if needed. A headset is optional, and game chat or Discord may use different speaker indicators.
