For smoother motion, start with the PS5 game preset and choose Performance Mode—but only games that support the mode can use it. For display responsiveness, check that your TV or monitor, HDMI port, cable, and console output settings support the features you want. For privacy, review the account controls for profile visibility, activity, messages, and invitations rather than relying on one broad switch.
Which PS5 settings make games smoother?
On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets, then choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode. Sony describes the tradeoff as: “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” The game must offer the relevant mode; this preference does not guarantee a frame-rate increase in every game. Sony notes that game presets apply to PS5 games and that some settings may not apply to all games. PlayStation Support’s game preset guide explains the options.

The preset also includes preferences for difficulty, first- and third-person views, subtitles and audio, and some online multiplayer sessions. The actual result depends on what the individual game supports.
How should I set PS5 video output for my display?
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Treat the available resolution, VRR, ALLM, and Video Transfer Rate options as a compatibility check—not a universal recipe. Your TV or monitor must support the feature, and the appropriate connection and current system software may also be needed. Understand VRR and ALLM
ALLM lets a compatible display use a low-latency mode when the PS5 sends the signal. The console does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running. VRR can also activate low-latency mode even if ALLM is set to Off; to turn ALLM off completely, Sony says to turn VRR off as well. If these controls behave differently than expected, check the display’s feature support and the PS5’s VRR setting.
Troubleshoot 4K at 120 Hz
If 4K/120 Hz output is unavailable or unstable, check the whole signal path rather than changing one setting at random:

- Confirm that the TV or monitor supports 4K/120 Hz and has current firmware.
- Connect the PS5 to the display’s HDMI port that supports the target output.
- Check that the cable supports the output. Sony recommends the cable supplied with the console or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Review the PS5 resolution and Video Transfer Rate settings.
If the picture flickers, Sony suggests trying Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 to limit the output, which may improve picture quality. A new cable is not automatically necessary: replace or upgrade it only if your current cable is unsuitable for the output you need. A cable cannot add support that the display or HDMI port lacks.
How do I hide what I’m playing on PS5?
Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. Choose a preset as a starting point, or select View and Customize Your Privacy Settings to adjust individual controls. Sony says these are account privacy settings and changes are reflected across devices. Its privacy settings guide describes four presets:

A preset can be more open or restrictive than you want for a particular activity. In View and Customize Your Privacy Settings, review controls for:
- Your real name and profile picture, and who can see your friends.
- Online status, the game you are playing, gaming history, and hidden games.
- Friend requests, interaction through parties, games, and messages, and blocking.
- Invitations to crossplay games.
For a balanced setup, adjust activity visibility and contact or invitation permissions individually to match how you find friends and play with others. The controls cover identity, activity, and communication—not just whether your profile is visible.

What changes for a child account?
A family manager, parent, or guardian may manage a child’s privacy settings and decide which settings the child is allowed to change. If an option is unavailable on a child account, the family manager should review the account’s permissions and parental controls. Do I need to reset my PS5 to change these settings?
No. Use the relevant game preset, video output, or privacy menu paths above; a factory-style reset is not needed for routine tuning.
