They share development roots through Sony and AMD’s Project Amethyst collaboration, but they are not interchangeable: platform support, game integration, features, and tuning differ. Neither name alone tells you which version will look or run better in a particular game.
What is the difference between PSSR and FSR?
PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony’s upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony describes it as an AI library that analyzes game imagery pixel by pixel as it upscales visuals. FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) is AMD’s suite of game technologies. Its features can include upscaling as well as separate techniques such as frame generation, ray regeneration, and radiance caching; which are available depends on the game, feature generation, and hardware.

Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a game frame rendered at a lower resolution. That can reduce rendering workload and free performance headroom, but the result depends on how the game implements the technique. Frame generation is different: it creates additional predicted frames rather than upscaling the rendered image.
Does PS5 Pro use AMD FSR?
PS5 Pro’s upscaler is called PSSR, not AMD FSR. Sony and AMD have collaborated on machine-learning graphics technology under Project Amethyst. Sony says the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from that collaboration, and points to AMD FSR 4 upscaling as another result of the work. Shared development does not mean the two products have identical code, platform support, game compatibility, or tuning.

Sony announced a deeper SIE-AMD collaboration in December 2024 focused on machine-learning technology for graphics and gameplay. In February 2026, Sony said the upgraded PSSR was coming to PS5 Pro and identified Resident Evil Requiem as the first title to use it. The connection is therefore a technical partnership, not a promise that every FSR game or feature runs on PS5 Pro.
How current PSSR and FSR support works
PSSR support on PS5 Pro
Sony announced upgraded PSSR support in March 2026 through a system software update, with support in named games including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Crimson Desert. Sony also described an optional console setting called “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” for compatible existing PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. The setting’s results vary by title, so check the game’s current patch information and the console’s display or graphics options rather than assuming every PS5 Pro game uses the updated version.

Sony’s September 2024 PS5 Pro announcement compared the console with the then-current PS5 and claimed 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory, and up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s manufacturer figures, not independent measurements of PSSR against FSR or a guarantee of a particular game’s performance.
FSR support on PC and other hardware
FSR support is determined by the specific feature and the game’s implementation, not just by the FSR brand name. AMD’s current feature information lists machine-learning-based FSR upscaling for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. That forward-looking compatibility statement applies to the newer ML-based upscaling feature, not to every earlier FSR generation. Check AMD’s FSR feature and compatibility information and the game’s own settings or support notes; availability can change.

Which looks better: PSSR or FSR?
There is no universal winner established by the available official material. Image quality and performance depend on the specific game, implementation, internal render resolution, selected graphics mode, output resolution, and target hardware. A result from one game or GPU cannot establish how every version of PSSR compares with every version of FSR.
For a concrete example of why implementation matters, Ubisoft’s explanation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows discusses the trade-offs between lower internal resolution, performance, clarity, and artifacts, and reports that game’s findings comparing PSSR with TAA. It is a title-specific explanation, not a controlled PSSR-versus-FSR benchmark.

How to make a fair comparison
When comparing screenshots, video, or frame-rate reports, look for tests that match the conditions below. If one differs, treat the comparison as suggestive rather than decisive.
- Same game and scene: use the same build and repeatable view, especially one with fine detail and motion.
- Same output and performance settings: match output resolution, graphics mode, and other visual settings.
- Known upscaler version: identify the PSSR revision or specific FSR generation and feature, rather than relying on the brand alone.
- Same hardware context: distinguish PS5 Pro results from PC results, including the graphics hardware used.
- More than a still image: assess fine-detail clarity, stability over time, motion artifacts, and frame rate.
Where QSSR fits
In October 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for selected original PS5 games, initially naming Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony describes QSSR as a streamlined performance tier of AI upscaling. It is separate terminology for a different PlayStation context; it is not a new name for PS5 Pro PSSR.

What to check before choosing a game setting
- Confirm the platform and title: PSSR applies to supported PS5 Pro games; FSR availability depends on the game and supported hardware.
- Check the game’s current patch notes and graphics settings for the exact upscaler, feature, and available modes.
- On PS5 Pro, if the game supports PSSR, check the console’s “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option and compare the game with the setting on and off where available.
- Compare image stability, detail in motion, artifacts, and performance in the same scene and at matched output settings.
The upscaler label is only one part of the result. The game’s implementation and the settings you actually use determine what you see.
