Prices are Sony’s US recommended retail prices, not guaranteed retailer prices or availability. Sony advised customers in other territories to check local retailers or PlayStation Direct, so the US figures should not be applied elsewhere. Sony’s March 2026 price announcement lists the recommended prices effective April 2, 2026.
What does PS5 Pro improve?
Sony’s September 2024 launch announcement said the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory that is 28% faster than the PS5 available at that time, enabling up to 45% faster rendering. Those are Sony’s manufacturer figures and describe potential, not a guarantee that every game renders 45% faster. No independent comparative benchmark is established here, and raw GPU figures do not tell you how a particular game will look or run.
The Pro’s practical advantages are enhanced image quality, ray tracing, or smoother frame rates in games that have been optimized for it. Sony describes PSSR as AI-driven upscaling, and in February 2026 said it had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 Pro titles. The implementation and results differ by game; Sony’s announcement of upgraded PSSR does not establish one universal improvement level.

A 4K TV can make image-quality improvements easier to notice, while a display capable of higher refresh rates may matter to players prioritizing frame rate. Treat these as practical considerations, not guarantees: the cited specifications do not establish a universal display threshold or quantify results across all games. Sony’s product information also says enhanced features apply only to supported titles; select games may support up to 8K, but 8K is not the default experience.
Does PS5 Pro still have exclusive AI upscaling?
No longer can AI upscaling be described as wholly Pro-exclusive. On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for PS5 and named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first titles. The announcement does not provide a controlled comparison with Pro PSSR or establish equivalent image quality or performance between consoles. For the Pro, Sony’s QSSR announcement is a reason to assess the specific game and console implementation rather than assuming the name of a technology settles the comparison.

How much more does PS5 Pro cost?
At Sony’s current US recommended prices, PS5 Pro costs $250 more than the standard PS5: $899.99 versus $649.99. The PS5 Digital Edition is $599.99. These are recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, not a live quote from a retailer.
The $699.99 US price Sony announced for PS5 Pro in September 2024 was its historical launch price, not the current recommended price. Sony’s launch announcement also gave launch prices for the UK, Europe, and Japan, but those figures are historical and should not be used as current local prices. Check the price in your market and any trade-in value you can actually obtain before calculating the upgrade cost.

What to check before upgrading
- List the games you regularly play. Check whether each has PS5 Pro enhancements and what those enhancements change. Sony says features are title-dependent; do not assume a game benefits just because it runs on PS5 Pro.
- Decide which improvement matters to you. If you care about sharper image quality, ray tracing, or frame rate, compare the game’s available modes and consider your display. A game’s specific implementation matters more than a headline GPU percentage.
- Compare the actual cost. Use current local prices, any confirmed trade-in value, and the cost of accessories you need. The US MSRP gap is a reference point, not a guaranteed checkout total.
- Account for physical discs. PS5 Pro is sold without an optical drive. If you use game or movie discs, factor in the separately sold compatible drive and whether you are comfortable with its setup requirement.
- Consider storage needs. The Pro includes a 2 TB custom SSD and an M.2 expansion connector. Whether that is enough depends on your installed games and capture files; the existence of the connector alone does not establish the price or value of an expansion drive.
Disc drive, storage, and accessory compatibility
Physical games and movies
Sony sells a detachable Disc Drive separately for PS5 Pro. Sony says it plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs, and that an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. Storage expansion and fit
Sony’s CFI-71XX safety guide lists 2 TB of custom SSD storage and an M.2 expansion connector. An M.2 expansion may help if your games and captures exceed available space, but no specific current compatible model or price is established here. The compatibility guide lists the detachable drive, horizontal stand feet, and vertical stand as compatible. Covers for original CFI-1000 PS5 consoles and slim CFI-2000 consoles are not compatible with Pro, so confirm your console model group before buying covers or fit accessories.

Who should buy PS5 Pro?
Choose PS5 Pro if
- Your regular games have meaningful Pro enhancements.
- You value image quality, ray tracing, or higher frame rates enough to pay the premium.
- You are buying a console new and want Sony’s higher-tier model with 2 TB of built-in storage.
Stay with or choose PS5 if
- The lower price matters more than enhanced modes.
- Your games see little benefit from Pro features, or you are satisfied with your current experience.
- You would rather put the price difference toward games or other priorities.
For an existing PS5 owner, the general GPU figures alone are not a sound reason to upgrade. Sony’s product goal, as described by Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, was a console for engaged players and creators seeking higher-fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60FPS. That is the company’s stated aim, not independent evidence that every title delivers it.
