PS5 Pro is a graphics-focused upgrade, not a universal performance guarantee. It has more GPU capacity, improved ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), but the visible benefit depends on each game’s Pro enhancements and the display modes it offers. In the U.S., Sony’s suggested price for PS5 Pro is $899.99—$250 more than the standard PS5—so the upgrade makes the most sense for players who value better image quality or ray tracing in supported games and can use the modes their display enables.

Prices are Sony’s U.S. suggested retail prices, not a guarantee of current retailer pricing or availability; prices outside the U.S. may differ. The hardware percentages are Sony’s manufacturer claims from its September 2024 announcement, not independent benchmark results. Sony’s own qualification is direct: “PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.”
What changes in graphics and performance?
More GPU capacity, but not a fixed frame-rate increase
Sony announced that PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the PS5 it compared against at launch. Sony also claimed up to 45% faster rendering. That last figure should not be read as a promise of 45% more frames per second in every game: the result depends on how a developer uses the hardware, the game’s mode, and its rendering targets.
Ray tracing and image upscaling
Sony describes Pro’s ray-tracing improvements as enabling more dynamic reflections and refractions. PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaling technology, designed to analyze game images and reconstruct a higher-resolution output. These features can improve image quality or allow a game to balance fidelity and frame rate differently, but they do not guarantee a particular native resolution, frame rate, or visual result.

Why the game matters more than the console badge
Compare the specific games and modes you play. Sony’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows mode breakdown shows why: both consoles list Performance mode at upscaled 2160p and 60 FPS, while PS5 uses selective ray tracing and PS5 Pro uses standard ray tracing. The Pro also lists a Fidelity mode at upscaled 2160p and 30 FPS with extended ray tracing. Its Balanced options are listed at 40 FPS and require a 120/240 Hz display and HDMI 2.1. These are mode details for this game, not a template for every Pro-enhanced title.
Other PlayStation.Blog game announcements describe different approaches. Saros is described as producing a sharper image on Pro while using dynamic resolution to maintain frame rate. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is described as adding extended ray tracing, strand-based hair, and updated PSSR on Pro. DOOM: The Dark Ages is described as receiving updated PSSR support exclusive to PS5 Pro for that title. These are game-maker descriptions published by PlayStation, not independent measurements.

What PSSR support means in practice
On February 27, 2026, Sony said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles to that date, and identified Resident Evil Requiem as the first title to use a newer version. On March 16, Sony described an updated PSSR rollout to selected existing games and an optional system setting for games that support PSSR. Sony cautions that results vary by game, and the list of supported titles can change as games receive updates.
A Pro label or PSSR support alone does not tell you which resolution or frame rate a game will deliver. Check the game’s available modes and whether the mode you want depends on a compatible high-refresh display.

How to decide whether PS5 Pro is worth the premium
PS5 Pro is a stronger fit if…
- You prioritize image quality, ray tracing, or smoother performance options in games with clearly documented Pro modes.
- Your most-played titles have enhancements you care about, rather than only a Pro label.
- Your display supports the resolution, refresh rate, and connection requirements of the mode you want.
- You are comfortable paying the local price premium for those specific improvements.
Standard PS5 is likely enough if…
- You are satisfied with how your current PS5 games look and run.
- The games you play have limited Pro-specific enhancements or offer modes that do not matter to you.
- The price difference is more important than the added graphics headroom.
Account for physical discs
PS5 Pro is disc-less. Sony said its separately purchased Disc Drive can be used with PS5 Pro; check current compatibility, local price, and availability before buying if you need physical game discs or UHD Blu-ray playback. The standard PS5 versus Digital Edition choice also matters if you rely on discs.

Sony’s 2024 announcement says PS5 Pro includes a 2TB SSD and one DualSense controller. The console does not include a disc drive. Retail prices, stock, and the cost of the separate drive are not established by Sony’s suggested-price announcement, so compare the actual purchase total in your market.

How to compare before upgrading
- Check your own games: Look up whether each game you play has PS5 Pro enhancements and which modes it offers.
- Compare the mode trade-offs: Note resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, and whether the mode uses PSSR or dynamic resolution.
- Check your display: Confirm the display and HDMI connection meet the requirements for the mode you want; some modes may require HDMI 2.1 and a 120/240 Hz display.
- Add disc costs if needed: Include the separate Disc Drive and verify its current compatibility, price, and availability.
- Compare local totals: Use actual retailer prices in your region rather than assuming Sony’s U.S. MSRP matches what you will pay.
