Choose PS5 Pro if the games you play are enhanced for Pro, you value sharper visuals or higher and steadier frame rates, and you are comfortable paying more. In Sony’s US store listings checked October 3, 2026, the Pro costs $899, compared with $649 for the base disc PS5 and $599 for the Digital Edition.
PS5 Pro vs. base PS5: price and configuration
Sony’s US direct store listed these prices and configurations on October 3, 2026. Retailer prices, stock, and Sony’s listings can change; these are US store prices, not guaranteed prices elsewhere.
| Console | Listed storage | Disc configuration | US Sony direct-store price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base PS5 | 1 TB | Disc drive included | $649 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 825 GB | Digital-only as sold | $599 |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | No disc drive included; compatible drive sold separately | $899 |
At those listed prices, the Pro is $250 more than the base disc PS5 and $300 more than the Digital Edition. The Pro’s 2 TB drive gives it more built-in storage, but published capacities are nominal: some SSD space is reserved for system functions, so usable capacity is lower. Sony announced a $699.99 US launch MSRP for PS5 Pro in 2024; that historical launch price is not its current US store price. Sony’s current console listings; Sony’s 2024 launch announcement.
What PS5 Pro improves—and what it does not
Sony highlights three Pro features: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), optimized console performance, and advanced ray tracing. In supported games, these can mean sharper image output or upscaling and a better chance of combining visual detail with higher or steadier frame rates. Sony describes compatible titles as capable of 60 fps or up to 120 fps with ray tracing and PSSR-enhanced 4K output, subject to the game and display setup; those figures are not a promise that every game will run that way.

Sony’s US feature page reported more than 100 PS5 titles enhanced for PS5 Pro when accessed October 3, 2026. The catalogue count can change, and Sony says features are available only in selected games and vary by title. Check Sony’s current enhanced-game list for the specific games you play before paying extra. Sony’s PS5 Pro features and enhanced-game information.
When those enhancements are worth paying for
- Your games matter more than the headline count. Pro benefits are game-specific, so confirm support for your regular games rather than assuming a uniform upgrade.
- Your screen and preferences matter. Consider whether your display supports the resolution and refresh-rate features you want, and whether you prefer sharper graphics, smoother motion, or a balance. The outcome depends on the supported game and display conditions.
- You are willing to pay the premium. At Sony’s listed US prices, Pro costs substantially more than either base configuration. The extra storage may also be useful if you keep many large games installed.
Disc games and movies: include the drive in the comparison
The base disc PS5 includes a drive; PS5 Pro is sold without one. Sony sells a compatible removable Disc Drive separately and says it can play PS5 and supported PS4 game discs, along with 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. Internet access is required to pair the drive during setup. If you buy, borrow, or watch discs, compare the Pro’s total cost with the separately sold drive against the base disc PS5, and verify compatibility for the exact console and accessory model before purchase. Game compatibility and storage
Sony says PS5 Pro plays all PS5 games and more than 8,500 PS4 games. Its US store listing also notes a small number of incompatible PS4 games, so do not treat compatibility as universal. The Pro uses the DualSense wireless controller. Sony’s PS5 Pro store listing.
The Pro’s listed 2 TB capacity is the largest of the three configurations in Sony’s current US listings; the base disc PS5 is listed at 1 TB and the Digital Edition at 825 GB. Since usable space is lower than nominal capacity, people who install many games should consider how often they are willing to remove and reinstall titles alongside the price difference.

Which PS5 should you buy?
Choose the base disc PS5 if value and discs come first
It is the straightforward choice if you want access to the PS5 library at a lower listed price than the Pro and need a disc drive built in. It also avoids buying a separate drive for physical PS5 or supported PS4 games and movie discs.
Choose the Digital Edition if you buy games digitally
The Digital Edition is the lowest-priced configuration in Sony’s current US listings. It is digital-only as sold and has 825 GB listed storage. Sony says a separate drive can be added to specified slim Digital Edition model groups; check your exact model’s compatibility if you may want physical media later.
