Either orientation is supported when you use the right support: attach the included horizontal feet for horizontal placement, or use a compatible vertical stand for upright placement. Sony’s published guidance does not show that one orientation cools better or collects less dust. Choose the setup that fits your space, then keep the console’s vents clear.

What Sony says about PS5 Pro airflow and dust
Sony’s PS5 Pro teardown describes the console’s intake and exhaust as being on its rear and bottom surfaces. Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida said, “The vent (exhaust vent) surface is also larger compared to other PS5 models, and air is taken in and exhausted from the rear and bottom surfaces.” The teardown also describes three exterior airflow blades, a redesigned fan, and a heat-sink layout selected for the Pro.
Those are design descriptions, not results from a controlled horizontal-versus-vertical test. The same teardown notes a dust catcher on the top side for cleaning purposes. It does not say that either orientation prevents dust buildup or reduces it compared with the other.
How much space to leave around the console
Sony’s PS5 ventilation guidance recommends leaving at least 10 cm of free space around each side. Keep the vents on the sides and rear clear, avoid placing the console in a cramped location or on long-fibre carpet, and do not let dust build up around the vents.

Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide also warns against operating the console in a closed cabinet or another space where heat can build up. A cabinet that looks spacious may still restrict airflow if it traps warm air, so use an open, well-ventilated location instead.
How to clean dust from PS5 Pro vents
- Turn off the console and disconnect the AC power cable from the rear.
- Use a low-powered vacuum around the air vents to remove accumulated dust, following Sony’s cleaning guidance.
- Before using the console again, check that its vents are unobstructed and the surrounding space remains clear.
Does vertical placement cause overheating or more dust?
The Sony sources cited here do not provide controlled temperature measurements, dust-accumulation measurements, or service-rate statistics comparing the two orientations. They therefore do not support a general claim that vertical placement causes overheating or collects more dust. Anecdotes about individual setups cannot establish an orientation-wide result; ventilation, placement, and dust around the vents are the practical factors Sony addresses.

Sony notes that a louder fan during some games can be normal because the fan may temporarily run faster to cool the system. If the console is unusually loud, first check that it is not in a cramped or enclosed space and that its vents are clear.
