For PS3 emulation today, a gaming PC running RPCS3 is the practical, documented choice. RPCS3 supports x64 PCs and publishes setup guidance, while the widely discussed Linux-on-PlayStation experiment was tested on PS5 architecture—not established as a PS5 Pro benchmark. Treat Linux access and RPCS3 performance on a PS5 Pro as unverified and dependent on the exact hardware and firmware.
Can the PS5 Pro run PS3 games through Linux?
There is no established, supported consumer setup showing that a PS5 Pro can reliably run RPCS3. Digital Foundry described testing RPCS3 under Linux on PS5 architecture, but that test is not evidence of PS5 Pro performance. Its video description identifies the PS3’s Cell processor design, particularly its SPU architecture, as a significant emulation challenge: Digital Foundry’s test description.
Linux access on PS5 hardware depends on unofficial exploit and firmware conditions, according to secondary technical reporting. Those conditions can change, and the available evidence does not establish that every PS5 Pro can run Linux, that Sony supports the setup, or that a Pro will outperform a PC. Check current reporting for the exact console model and firmware before considering this route.
Why a gaming PC is the practical choice
RPCS3 is a PS3 emulator for Windows and Linux, and its project publishes PC requirements, installation instructions, and a per-game compatibility list. Its FAQ says an x64 CPU is a minimum, while also cautioning that requirements are not fully known and may change as the project develops: RPCS3 FAQ.

A desktop gaming PC is easier to plan around because the project documents PC hardware and strongly recommends a desktop over a laptop for the optimal experience. That is a practical advantage, not a promise that a particular PC will run every PS3 game well. There are no directly comparable PS5 Pro and PC benchmarks in the available evidence, so a quantified performance advantage for either system cannot be claimed.
Check whether your PS3 game is playable
Compatibility is specific to each game. RPCS3 labels titles “Playable” when they can be completed with playable performance and without game-breaking glitches; “Ingame” means the game reaches gameplay but may not be completable or may have significant issues. When accessed in 2026, the live list showed 3,615 games and 6,402 IDs, with 69.85% marked Playable and 27.19% Ingame. These are changing database values, not a guarantee of how a game will perform on an individual system. The list updates, and a status can apply to a specific game ID rather than every release or configuration.
What PC hardware should you look for?
Use the official quickstart as a baseline, then check compatibility reports for your intended games. RPCS3 lists x64 CPUs, compatible OpenGL graphics, and memory and storage baselines; it explicitly warns that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee performance or stability. The project recommends an 8-core/16-thread, 35W-or-higher H-series CPU and a compatible dedicated GPU for laptops, and strongly recommends a desktop for the optimal experience. - Start with the game. Confirm its status and review current title-specific information before buying parts.
- Prioritize a capable CPU. Emulating the PS3’s architecture presents a substantial CPU challenge; a minimum-spec label alone does not predict smooth play.
- Check graphics compatibility. Choose a GPU and driver setup supported by RPCS3’s current requirements rather than assuming any gaming GPU will behave identically.
- Prefer a desktop if building for emulation. The RPCS3 project favors desktops for optimal experience and desktop configurations provide a more straightforward upgrade path.
Setup requirements and game sourcing
RPCS3 does not include PlayStation 3 system software or game titles. Its quickstart says to obtain the PS3 system software from PlayStation and install it in RPCS3. Game data must be dumped by the user from a PS3 console or compatible Blu-ray drive; the project says PS3 game titles cannot be distributed online. The emulator therefore does not remove the need to obtain firmware and games through the stated legitimate routes.
