What determines whether a PS5 game qualifies for a refund?
For an ordinary digital game bought on the US PlayStation Store, the key questions are when you bought it, whether downloading or streaming has started, and whether the product is faulty. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US cancellation policy sets a 14-day window from the purchase date, subject to the no-download-or-streaming condition.
Not having played the game is not the same as having kept it undelivered. If a download or stream has already started, the normal change-of-mind cancellation rule no longer applies, even if you have not launched the game. A quick way to assess your situation
First identify the product shown in your purchase history. A full game, an add-on, a pre-order, and wallet funds do not all use the same cancellation conditions. Then check the relevant date: for an ordinary game or add-on, the standard period runs for 14 days from purchase. Finally, check delivery status. If downloading or streaming has begun, merely leaving the game unopened does not restore the ordinary cancellation option.
If all three checks point toward eligibility, use the available refund route or contact PlayStation Support. If the game was downloaded or streamed, the ordinary exception to consider is whether the product is genuinely faulty. A price drop or a change of mind is not the same as a fault. The US policy preserves rights that may apply under local law, so the stated policy is not a substitute for any rights applicable to your situation.
How do pre-order refunds work?
Pre-order cancellation depends on how far in advance payment was taken. In either timing case, cancellation is generally subject to the main product not having started downloading or streaming.

- Payment taken 14 days or less before release: cancellation is generally available for up to 14 days after payment, subject to the same no-download-or-streaming condition.
Automatic Downloads can affect this condition. If that setting is enabled, a pre-order may begin downloading automatically when eligible. Check the product’s delivery status before relying on the pre-order cancellation window; simply not opening the game does not establish that delivery has not begun.
For example, the timing is not always “14 days after release.” If payment was taken more than 14 days before release, the stated window generally lasts until release. If payment was taken 14 days or less before release, the stated window generally lasts up to 14 days after payment. In both cases, a download or stream of the main product can affect eligibility, so check both the payment date and delivery status.
What if I bought an add-on, season pass, or in-game currency?
These products do not all behave like a full game, so identify the exact item in your purchase history before applying the ordinary game rule.

Add-ons and season passes
Game add-ons generally follow the standard 14-day rule: the add-on must not have started downloading or streaming, unless it is faulty. A season pass is generally cancellable within 14 days, but downloading or streaming a digital item included with it usually makes it ineligible unless that item is faulty.
With a season pass, consider whether any included digital content has already begun delivery, rather than checking only whether you have opened the pass itself. The condition concerns the included digital item. For add-ons, the question is likewise whether downloading or streaming has started, not simply whether you have used the content.
Virtual currency and other consumables
For a consumable bought outside gameplay, such as virtual currency or a boost, cancellation may be available within 14 days only while the item has not been delivered. Launching the game may deliver the purchased item. A consumable bought during gameplay is delivered immediately and generally cannot be canceled unless faulty.
This makes the purchase context important: an item bought from a store outside the game may not yet have been delivered, while a consumable purchased during gameplay is delivered at once under the policy. If you are unsure whether delivery occurred, explain the purchase and what happened when you contacted support rather than assuming that not spending virtual currency means it remains undelivered.
Bundles and subscriptions
A promotional digital bundle is generally cancellable within 14 days only if no part of the bundle has started downloading or streaming. Check each included item’s delivery status; one delivered portion can matter for the bundle rule. Subscription services have a separate 14-day cancellation rule, and a refund may be reduced to reflect use. These categories should not be treated as ordinary game purchases simply because they were bought alongside a game.

If you believe the product is faulty, explain the actual problem to PlayStation Support rather than describing a change of mind as a fault. The policy names fault as an exception, but it does not mean that every technical issue automatically qualifies; provide accurate details about what is happening and follow the support process.
The distinction matters even if you have not played the game: starting delivery and starting gameplay are not the same event. A wallet top-up is different from a game purchase: the US policy says wallet top-ups cannot be canceled, and the terms describe wallet funds as non-refundable except where required by law. Buying wallet funds does not create a separate way to reverse a game purchase.
For the same reason, purchasing a gift card or adding funds is not a workaround for a game refund. The refund question concerns the digital content purchase and its applicable cancellation conditions; wallet funds have their own non-refundable rule, subject to what the law requires.
What should I check before sending a request?
