Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your PS5 friends list is empty, stuck loading, or missing from Game Base, the cause is usually one of three things: a PlayStation Network problem, a connection failure, or an account privacy setting. It is also easy to follow outdated PS4 instructions—the PS5 uses Game Base rather than a separate Friends app on the home screen.
Work through these six solutions in order. The first steps identify whether the problem is temporary; the later ones address account settings and persistent console issues.
1. Open the friends list through Game Base
First confirm that the list is being opened from the correct PS5 menu:
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Select Game Base from the control center.
- Open the Friends tab.
You can also try locating the person through a message search:

- Press the PS button.
- Open Game Base.
- Choose New Message.
- Search for the player by name.
If the player appears in message search but not under Friends, the issue may involve friendship status, privacy, or blocking rather than the console’s internet connection. Also check that you are signed in to the intended PlayStation Network account.
2. Check PlayStation Network status, then restart the PS5
A PSN outage can stop friends, messages, profiles, and other online data from loading even when the PS5 says that its local internet connection is working. Check the official PlayStation Network status page before changing settings.
If a service is unavailable or under maintenance, wait for it to recover. Repeatedly changing your router settings will not repair a PSN-side outage.
If the status page shows no problem, restart the console:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press the PS button.
- Select Power.
- Choose Restart PS5.
After the restart, open Game Base again. This refreshes the console’s connection to PlayStation services and is a sensible first-line fix for a temporary server-connection failure.
3. Test the PS5 connection and restart your network equipment
To test the connection from the console, go to:
Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Pay attention to whether the test fails at the internet connection or PlayStation Network sign-in stage. A PS5 can connect to the router while still failing to reach PSN.
If the connection is unstable, turn off both the modem and router. Leave them off for at least five minutes, then power them back on and wait until the internet connection is fully restored. Restart the PS5 afterward.
For recurring connection errors, PlayStation also recommends these network improvements:
- Use a wired Ethernet connection if possible.
- Move the PS5 closer to the router when using Wi-Fi.
- Update the router’s firmware.
- Reconfigure the PS5’s network settings.
Test Game Base after each major change. If every other online PS5 feature works but the friends list alone does not, a general Wi-Fi problem becomes less likely.
4. Review privacy, communication, and blocking settings
Privacy controls can make a friend difficult to find or prevent interaction without indicating a hardware fault. On the PS5, open:
Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy
Choose either Adjust Privacy Settings by Choosing a Profile or View and Customize Your Privacy Settings. Review these controls in particular:

If a particular friend is missing, check whether either account has blocked the other. A blocked player or restrictive communication setting can look like a missing-friend problem, especially when profile discovery and messaging also fail.
Privacy settings belong to the account, not just one console. A change made on PlayStation.com or in the PlayStation App can therefore affect what appears on your PS5.
5. Check that the account is not using “Solo and Focused”
The Solo and Focused privacy preset is stricter than simply appearing offline. PlayStation says that under this preset, other players cannot see your profile information or invite you to chat—even if they are already your friends.
Return to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy and select a less restrictive profile, or customize the relevant visibility and communication settings. Then sign out and back in, or restart the PS5, and check Game Base again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not confuse this with Appear Offline. The path Set Online Status > Appear Offline controls whether other people can see your online status or what you are playing. It is not documented as a setting that deletes or hides the friends list itself.
If the account is a child-family account, the family manager, parent, or guardian may control these privacy settings. In that case, the child account may not be able to change the restriction independently.

6. Update the PS5, then use Safe Mode only for a persistent console problem
Before using deeper troubleshooting, make sure the PS5 has the latest system software installed. Go to:
Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings
Install any available update, restart the console, and test Game Base.
If the friends list is still consistently broken after PSN, network, and privacy checks, PlayStation’s general escalation guidance includes the Safe Mode option Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. This is a general console troubleshooting measure; the official guidance does not establish that rebuilding the database specifically repairs a missing friends list.
To enter Safe Mode, turn the PS5 off completely. Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep, connect the controller with a USB cable, and press the PS button. Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Do not select reset options casually. Rebuilding the database is different from resetting the PS5, but you should still back up important data and avoid any option that says it will reset or delete the console unless you have confirmed the consequences.

Should you restore PS5 licenses?
The menu path Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses is safe for saved data—PlayStation says restoring licenses will not affect your data. However, it is intended for problems such as padlocked games, missing games or add-ons, and crashing games.
PlayStation does not identify Restore Licenses as a repair for a friends list that will not load. It is therefore not one of the main fixes for this problem. Use it when you have a license or game-content issue, not as a substitute for checking PSN, network, and privacy settings.
What the symptom usually means
| Symptom | Most likely area to check |
|---|---|
| Friends and messages both fail to load | PSN status, internet connection, or a temporary sign-in problem |
| Only one friend is missing | Friendship status, blocking, privacy, or a changed account |
| The list works in the PlayStation App but not on the PS5 | Restart, system software, or a console-side connection problem |
| You can see friends but cannot message or invite them | Communication settings, Solo and Focused, or a family-account restriction |
| Friends appear after a delay | Unstable network or a temporary PSN synchronization issue |
There is no official PS5 command, button sequence, DNS command, or dedicated friends-list cache command confirmed for repairing this issue. Be cautious with guides that present one as an official fix.
FAQ
Why is my PS5 friends list not showing up?
The common causes are a PlayStation Network outage, an unstable connection, restrictive privacy settings, blocking, or a temporary Game Base synchronization problem. Check PSN status, restart the console, test the connection, and review Privacy settings.
Where is the Friends list on PS5?
Press the PS button, select Game Base, and open the Friends tab. You can also choose New Message in Game Base and search for a player.
Does Appear Offline hide my friends list?
No. Appear Offline hides your online status and what you are playing from other people. It is not documented as a feature that removes or hides the friends list.
Can restoring licenses fix a missing friends list?
It is not an established friends-list fix. Restore Licenses is intended for game and license problems such as padlocks, missing add-ons, or crashing games. It does not delete saved data.
What does Solo and Focused do on PS5?
Solo and Focused prevents other players from seeing your profile information or inviting you to chat, even if they are your friends. A family manager may control this setting on a child account.
The Bottom Line
Start with Game Base, then check the PSN status page and restart the PS5. If the service is online, run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection, restart the modem and router, and review privacy, blocking, and Solo and Focused settings. Update the system software before considering Safe Mode. Restore Licenses is harmless to saved data, but it is meant for game-license problems—not a missing friends list.
