For a dependable way to play PS5 games on another screen, choose PlayStation Remote Play. It streams a game running on your PS5 to a compatible device. PS5 emulation instead tries to run games locally on a PC, but as of September 2026 it remains experimental, with limited compatibility and reported bugs, visual glitches, and uneven performance.
These options solve different problems: Remote Play gives you access to a console you own, while emulation is an evolving PC project for people willing to troubleshoot and accept that a desired game may not work.
PS5 emulation and Remote Play work differently
| Question | PlayStation Remote Play | PS5 emulation |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On a PS5 or PS4 console; the game’s video and controls are streamed to another device. | Locally on a PC through an emulator or compatibility project. |
| Do you need a PS5? | Yes, to use PS5 Remote Play. | Not as the machine running the emulator. Requirements for games and firmware vary by project and are not established here. |
| How dependable is it? | Officially supported, subject to compatible devices, games, and network conditions. | Experimental. Reports published in 2026 describe limited support and defects. |
| Does it rely on a network? | Yes. The console streams to the other device, and Sony specifies a minimum connection speed. | Local execution is not inherently a stream, though project setup and game or firmware access vary. |
| Who is it best for? | A PS5 owner who wants to play on a supported phone, computer, TV device, or Portal. | A technically curious PC user prepared to experiment with an evolving project. |
Remote Play is the practical starting point if your goal is to use your installed console library on another screen. Emulation is relevant if your goal is specifically local PC execution and you accept that compatibility is not assured.
What you need for PlayStation Remote Play
Sony’s official US Remote Play guidance, accessed October 7, 2026, lists a PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, or a PS4 or PS4 Pro, connected to broadband; a compatible device; the free PS Remote Play app; a compatible game; and a supported controller where required. For PS5 Remote Play, the game runs on the PS5 while the other device acts as the screen and control endpoint.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Sony lists iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, Windows PCs, Macs, Android TV and Chromecast with Google TV, another PS5, and PS4 among supported device combinations. Operating-system and controller support depend on the device. Some supported mobile devices also provide touch controls. A DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 may be used where supported; check Sony’s compatibility details for your device before relying on a specific controller.
Network thresholds and latency
Sony states that Remote Play requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are connection-speed thresholds, not guarantees of a particular image quality or latency. Network conditions affect play, and greater distance between the console and a Remote Play TV can increase latency. Using mobile data may consume your plan’s allowance.

Games and equipment that may not work
Remote Play does not support every game. Sony excludes games that require PlayStation VR or PS VR2, games that need additional peripherals beyond supported controllers, and games that must be streamed with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. If a game depends on a specialized accessory, verify compatibility before choosing Remote Play.
PlayStation Portal is a Remote Play device, not an emulator
PlayStation Portal is a dedicated screen for Remote Play. In this mode, it streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5; the PS5 needs broadband and must be on or in Rest Mode. Sony lists a 5 Mbps minimum and recommends 15 Mbps for Portal Remote Play. PlayStation Plus is not required for this mode.

Portal also has a separate cloud-streaming mode. In a November 2025 announcement, Sony said PlayStation Plus Premium members could cloud stream selected PS5 games on Portal, including eligible digital PS5 games in their library and games from PlayStation Plus catalogs. Cloud streaming does not connect Portal to the user’s PS5, and the eligible games and feature requirements may change. See Sony’s Portal cloud-streaming announcement for the announced details.
How usable is PS5 emulation in 2026?
Emulation attempts to reproduce console behavior on different hardware rather than stream from a PlayStation. Reporting published in July and September 2026 describes progress in projects including SharpEmu and KytyPS5, but also reports bugs, visual glitches, and performance problems. The reports do not establish that a particular PC will run a particular game, or that a broad share of the PS5 library is playable.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
On September 28, 2026, GamesRadar+ reported a SharpEmu developer update saying 55 games had been tested, 12 reached in-game, and six were reported fully playable at 60 FPS. Those are developer-reported results for that tested sample, not an independent benchmark or a measurement of the full PS5 library.
Tom’s Hardware reported on July 15, 2026 that some 2D titles ran well and some 3D titles had booted, while 3D emulation was less mature. Its July 31 follow-up described selected 3D games running with visual problems and uneven performance. These dated reports describe particular progress, not a compatibility guarantee for a game you want to play.

Choose based on what you want to do
- Choose Remote Play if you already have a PS5 and want to access compatible games on another supported screen. Your experience will depend on the network, device, controller support, and game compatibility.
- Consider Portal if you want a purpose-built screen for PS5 Remote Play and have a paired PS5. Treat its Premium cloud-streaming option as a distinct service mode for selected titles.
- Consider emulation only as an experiment if you specifically want local PC execution and are comfortable with incomplete compatibility, technical setup, and performance issues.
If you are asking whether you can reliably play PS5 games on a PC without a PS5, the evidence available as of September 2026 does not support treating emulation as a general replacement for owning or accessing a console. Remote Play is not a way to eliminate the console: it uses the PS5 to run the game and streams its output to the PC or other device.
