You will redeem the code and download the game, so a PS5 disc drive is not required to play that copy. Choose the disc-drive PS5 if you also want to play supported physical PS4 or PS5 games; choose the Digital Edition if you are comfortable buying games digitally.
Does the boxed GTA 6 copy come on a disc?
No. Rockstar says its physical retail version contains a code for the digital download and that no disc is included. “Physical” describes the boxed product, not a disc-based copy of the game. The code must be redeemed and the game downloaded.
Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026 as GTA 6’s release date for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is the announced date as of October 7, 2026; it is not a guarantee against a later change. Rockstar also says digital preloads are scheduled to begin November 12, 2026 at local midnight. Check the current Rockstar Games support information on platforms, editions, and versions and Rockstar Store listing for updates. Code-region restrictions can apply, so buy a code intended for the country or region of your platform account and review the retailer’s terms.
What is different between the PS5 configurations?

Capacities are Sony’s listed figures for the US configurations described on its PS5 product page. They are not figures for usable free space or GTA 6’s install size, which the reviewed official sources do not state. Product configurations and capacities can vary by model or market; check the listing for the exact console you plan to buy.

Which PS5 should you choose for GTA 6?
Choose the disc-drive PS5 if you have physical games
The disc-drive model is the more flexible fit if you own supported PS4 or PS5 game discs, expect to buy physical games, or want a console drive for supported discs. That benefit is about your wider game and disc use—not a requirement for the boxed GTA 6 offer.
Choose the Digital Edition if you buy games digitally
The Digital Edition suits players who get their games through digital downloads and do not need a drive for physical PS4 or PS5 titles. GTA 6 itself can be played from a digital download, including the code redeemed from the boxed retail version.

Consider a drive later only after checking the model
Sony lists a separately sold detachable drive for specified slim Digital Edition model groups and PS5 Pro. It is not a universal upgrade for every Digital Edition: verify that the exact model is compatible, and note that internet access is required to pair the drive during setup. No performance advantage is established for either configuration. The reviewed official information distinguishes the consoles by disc-drive support and listed capacity; it does not provide a GTA 6 comparison for frame rate, graphics, or gameplay quality. Do not choose the disc-drive model expecting better GTA 6 performance.

Likewise, no GTA 6 install-size figure is established in those sources. The difference between Sony’s listed 1TB and 825GB capacities does not by itself tell you how much free space you will have or whether either console will fit the game alongside your other downloads.

How to make the decision
- List the games and media you use. If you want to play supported PS4 or PS5 discs, choose the disc-drive console or confirm compatibility for a specific optional drive.
- Decide whether digital-only suits you. If you are happy downloading games, either configuration can play GTA 6; the boxed game code also leads to a download.
- Compare the exact local models and prices. Prices and product configurations vary by market and retailer; check current listings rather than assuming one edition is always cheaper.
- Check code region and drive compatibility before purchase. Buy a GTA 6 code intended for your platform-account region, and verify the precise PS5 model before buying a detachable drive.
