Choose the PS5 Disc Edition if you own PS4 or PS5 game discs, expect to buy physical games, or want to play supported discs for movies. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you buy games digitally and do not need disc media. The disc-drive model has no listed gaming-performance advantage in Sony’s CFI-21XX specifications; the key differences are disc support and, on Sony’s current US listing, storage capacity.
PS5 Disc or Digital: Which Is Better for You?
For most buyers, the deciding question is whether they need a disc drive. Both versions can play digital games. The Disc Edition also accepts compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs and supported movie discs. The Digital Edition has no built-in drive, though some slim models can use a separately sold add-on drive.
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You own PS4 game discs or plan to buy physical games | Disc Edition | PS4 discs cannot be used on the Digital Edition, while supported discs work on a disc-drive PS5. |
| You buy games digitally and do not use discs | Digital Edition | It is designed for downloads from PlayStation Store; eligible slim models can add a drive separately. |
| You want to play supported 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD movies | Disc Edition, or compatible slim Digital Edition with add-on drive | Confirm the console model and drive compatibility first. |
| You want more listed internal storage on Sony’s current US listing | Disc Edition | The listing gives the PS5 1TB and the Digital Edition 825GB. |
| You are choosing based only on gaming performance | No established winner | Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists matching CPU, GPU, and memory specifications for the two versions. |
| You want the lowest lifetime cost | Depends on local prices and your habits | A universal savings or resale break-even point is not established. |
What Is the Difference Between the PS5 Disc and Digital Editions?
Disc support and game access
The Disc Edition supports compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs as well as digital downloads. The Digital Edition gets games through PlayStation Store and cannot read game discs. For a PS4 disc game played on a disc-drive PS5, the disc must remain inserted while you play. See Sony’s PS4 backward-compatibility guidance.
Storage on the current US listing
Sony’s current US product page lists 1TB for the PS5 console and 825GB for the Digital Edition. The CFI-21XX manual’s specification table also lists those capacities for those model groups. These are listed storage capacities, not a promise of the amount available for games after system software and other files. Capacities can vary by region and model generation, so check the exact SKU before purchase. See the Sony US PS5 product page and CFI-21XX instruction manual.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Gaming performance
For the CFI-21XX model group, Sony’s manual lists the same CPU, GPU, and 16GB memory entries for the PS5 and Digital Edition. The drive and storage capacity are the relevant listed distinctions here, not a demonstrated gameplay-performance difference. This comparison should not be generalized to other model generations without checking their specifications.
Can You Play PS4 Discs on PS5 Digital Edition?
No. Sony states that PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. If you have a physical PS4 library, choose a disc-drive PS5 to use those discs. Sony also notes that a disc needs to be inserted to play a disc-based game on a compatible PS5. Check Sony’s backward-compatibility support page for details.

Can You Add a Disc Drive to PS5 Digital Edition?
Some Digital Edition consoles can use Sony’s detachable CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive, but compatibility depends on the console model. Sony lists the drive for specified CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups and PS5 Pro. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media, so do not assume an older Digital Edition can be upgraded.
- Check the console’s model code and confirm it belongs to a supported group on Sony’s PS5 product page or the PS5 Disc Drive page.
- Buy the CFI-ZDD1-series drive separately if the exact console model is supported.
- Connect the drive and console to the internet during setup; Sony requires an internet connection to pair them.
Sony lists supported PS5 games, supported PS4 titles, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs for compatible disc-drive configurations. Consult its drive compatibility and setup information before relying on a particular format or console model.

Can a PS5 Play Blu-ray Movies?
A PS5 with a compatible disc drive can play supported Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD media. The Digital Edition without an add-on drive cannot play disc media. Since drive compatibility differs across Digital Edition model generations, verify the model before buying a console or a detachable drive. Sony’s disc and USB media support page describes supported formats and the original Digital Edition limitation.
Will One Version Save You Money?
There is no reliable universal break-even answer. The outcome depends on current local console prices, the prices of the games you actually buy, whether you use used or discounted physical copies, and whether you resell or lend discs. Those prices and resale values are not established here, so compare current offers in your region against your own buying habits rather than assuming one edition always costs less over time.

What About Sony’s January 2028 Digital-Only Notice?
Sony’s US PS5 page currently displays a notice that newly released PlayStation games will be sold digitally only from January 2028, while older discs can continue to be played. That stated scope is about newly released games, not the ability to keep using compatible existing discs. Because availability and product-page wording can change, check the current notice on Sony’s US PS5 page if future physical releases are part of your decision.
