No: a PlayStation 5 cannot play an original PlayStation 2 disc. Sony’s PS5 instruction manual says PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 format software cannot be played from a disc. That remains true for disc-equipped PS5 models: a compatible PS5 disc drive does not add support for PS2 games.
You may still be able to play a particular PS2-era game on PS5 if it has a separate PS4 or PS5 release, or is available as a supported digital title in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. In those cases, the PS5 runs that modern release or catalog version—not the game from your PS2 disc.
Will a PS5 read an original PS2 disc?
No. Sony’s PS5 instruction manual explicitly excludes PlayStation 2 format software played from a disc. In practical terms, inserting an original PS2 game is not a way to install it, launch it, or claim a digital copy on PS5. The disc itself is unsupported as PS5 game software.
The answer does not change if your PS5 has a disc drive. A drive lets the console use supported physical media; it does not make the console compatible with every older disc format. Adding or swapping a compatible PS5 disc drive likewise does not add PS2-format support. The limitation is about the games the PS5 supports, not a missing accessory that converts an old disc into a PS5 game.

If you have a PS5 Digital Edition, there is no disc playback path for the original disc at all. For PS5 play, you would need a separately available digital or modern release. If you have a disc-equipped PS5, the PS2 disc still will not work: having a drive does not change the format limitation.
Why do some PS2-era games appear on PS5?
A game from the PS2 era can be playable on PS5 without the original PS2 disc being compatible. A publisher may have released a new PS4 or PS5 version, or Sony may offer a supported digital version through the Classics Catalog. Those are distinct software releases or catalog builds, not a way for the PS5 to run the contents of an arbitrary PS2 disc.
That distinction matters when you are checking ownership or deciding what to buy. A listing that says a game is available on PS5 does not mean that your PS2 copy qualifies. The modern release is a separate product and entitlement. Sony’s documented disc-based upgrade mechanism covers eligible PS4 games and PS4 discs, not PS2 discs. Remaster, remake, port, or collection: what changes?
These labels describe ways a publisher can bring an older game to a newer platform, but the label alone does not tell you whether the PS2 disc works. A remaster may update presentation; a remake may rebuild more of the game; a port adapts a release for another platform; and a collection may package multiple titles. Regardless of the label, the PS5 runs the new release, not the PS2 disc.

Before choosing one, verify the exact title and platform in the PlayStation Store or the publisher’s listing. Check whether the listing is for PS4, PS5, or both; whether it is a physical or digital product; and whether the edition includes the game, language, or downloadable content you want. A title’s name being familiar is not enough to establish that a particular edition contains the same content as your old copy.
What does “emulation” mean on PS5?
Emulation is software that reproduces the behavior of an older console platform so compatible software can run on newer hardware. The word is often used broadly in conversations about classic games, but it does not mean that a PS5 can read every PS2 disc and run it.
Sony’s consumer documentation describes a narrower compatibility model: supported PS4 games, separate modern releases, and selected older games offered through the Classics Catalog. It does not document a feature that lets owners insert arbitrary PS2 discs and have the PS5 emulate them. Nor should you assume every Classics title uses the same technical implementation or that every PS2 game appears in the catalog. The supported conclusion is simply that some officially released classic titles can be played on PS5, while original PS2 discs remain unsupported.
Can PlayStation Plus play PS2 games on PS5?
It can provide access to selected older games through the Classics Catalog, where a title is currently offered and the account meets the relevant membership and regional requirements. That is access to the supported catalog version, not disc compatibility or a conversion of your PS2 copy.

Catalog selection and availability can change. They can vary by country, membership tier, licensing, and the title’s current catalog status. Search the PlayStation Store or Classics Catalog for the exact game in your local region before subscribing or relying on access. Check the specific listing for the required plan and whether the game is currently included; a general claim that PS Plus has classic games does not establish that your particular title is available.
Sony’s backward-compatibility figures for PS4 should not be confused with PS2 disc support. Sony said in 2020 that PS5 supported more than 99% of PS4 games, describing a library of more than 4,000 PS4 games. Those figures concern PS4 games only; they do not extend to PS2 discs.
What is the best way to play a PS2-era game you own?
The right route depends on whether you want to use the original disc, get a modern version, or play through a current subscription catalog. Use this decision path before buying anything.
- If using the exact PS2 disc is the priority: use a PlayStation 2 or another compatible legacy setup. That is a separate way to play the physical disc; it does not make the disc work in a PS5.
- If you want to play on PS5 with a modern release: look for the exact game’s official PS4 or PS5 remaster, remake, port, or collection. Treat it as a separate release and check its price, platform, edition, and included content.
- If you want a catalog version: check the title in your local Classics Catalog, then confirm its current availability and membership-tier requirements before counting on access.
- If you own a PS5 Digital Edition: plan on a digital or otherwise supported PS5 release for PS5 play. The original disc cannot be used on that console.
For a modern release, compare the things that affect your specific decision: the separate purchase cost versus using legacy hardware or a catalog plan; whether the release is available in your region and language; and whether it includes the content you care about. Presentation may also differ. A modern version may offer changes to resolution, frame rate, widescreen support, textures, or loading, but those improvements depend on the specific release. Do not assume every rerelease has them.

Save compatibility needs its own check. A PS2 memory-card save should not be assumed to transfer to a PS4 or PS5 version. The modern release may use a different save system, and the availability of any transfer method depends on that particular game. If continuing an old save matters, verify it with the release’s official information before purchasing.

Does PS4 backward compatibility mean PS2 discs work?
No. PS5’s broad support for PS4 games is a different compatibility feature from support for PS2 discs.
